Hey guys, welcome back to another video.
Before we get started on what today's video is about,
I actually wanted to show you guys a sneak peek
of this new piece of furniture that we have.
So we are in the dining room right now.
I have never, since we've lived here,
which has been six years,
I have never switched up this room.
I've added a little dresser in the corner
and a little corner shelf.
I've never like moved things around.
For months and months I've been wanting a hutch,
but I've measured all of the walls
and the only wall that a hutch would fit on
is this back wall in my dining room.
So this is where our sliding farm,
what is this called?
This is where our barn door is,
if you can kind of get the idea of where we are right now.
So I went on Instagram and I shared
like my little patriotic decor I had staged over here
and I asked for your guys' opinion.
If I should, you know, move this somewhere else.
This whole setup was one of my favorite setups in my house.
So I was having a hard time parting with that,
but at the same time I've always wanted to have a hutch.
And again, this is the only wall
that that would fit on in my entire house.
So everybody voted, 100% of people said move the decor,
get the hutch, and if you don't like it,
then just move it back.
So that's what I ended up doing.
I found this hutch off of Facebook Marketplace
and I got it for only $100.
But the reason I'm sharing this with you
is because my next video, which will be up Thursday,
I upload every Monday and Thursday,
is going to be me making over this hutch.
I actually had the idea of maybe painting it black.
So I brought it in and left it here for a few days
and I'm like, okay, it's too dark for me.
Like, I want it to be a little bit lighter.
So that's what's going to be the video up Thursday.
Sorry for the long intro.
We're going to jump into today's video
and that is going to be us making a coffee table.
I also just did a coffee table makeover video.
If you missed that, I will have that linked below.
But the color of this coffee table that we have upstairs
is a bluish green color.
And I knew it would be beautiful up here,
like January through the springtime and the summertime,
but I knew it wasn't going to go
with like my fall and Christmas decor.
So I have had my eye out for some kind of design
I wanted inspiration of,
and then I was going to have Thomas build it.
So I am not doing any of this.
I might help stain it.
I don't even know if I'll help with that.
He's going to build it.
I just gave him an idea of what I wanted it to look like.
So that is what today's video will be,
is Thomas making a coffee table.
And we will definitely be doing it as cheaply as possible.
Like we always do all of our projects.
So that is what today's video is.
We're going to move the other coffee table
to our downstairs living room
and have the new one up here for the next half of the year.
That's crazy.
I can't believe it's already halfway over,
but I'm thinking ahead.
I'm thinking of the fall and winter months that are coming.
And I really wanted a more neutral coffee table
to go upstairs in our living room.
So let's jump into the video.
For this coffee table build,
you're only going to need two of these boards.
The dimensions of these boards are two by 10 by 12.
And the first thing he did was he cut three boards
at the length of 42 inches.
So that's the length of our coffee table.
And the whole top is just three boards put together.
And for the legs,
you are going to need to cut eight of them at 16 inches long.
So once you're done,
this is exactly what your boards will look like.
The next step is something extra.
And Thomas will kind of explain that with a biscuit joiner.
If you don't have one, you don't need one.
You could just skip this step
and attach the top of the coffee table together
with some brackets.
You don't need to use these biscuit joiners.
I decided to just because it's extra.
You can do this with just the brackets
and use the brackets across and it would be enough,
especially cause you're going to put the legs underneath it
and it's going to support across anywhere that it would bend.
So I'm just doing these for extra support.
So because we already have this tool,
we thought we would use it for this coffee table.
So he's just filling the holes with wood glue,
putting the biscuits in,
and then he attaches the boards together that way.
So he will just do this one more time on the other side.
But again, if you do not have one of these tools,
then you can just get a flat bracket
and screw each board in together.
The next thing he's doing
is he's going to glue the legs together.
You obviously could do different legs or be creative
and do whatever you want.
But if you like the look of this design,
that's what I liked was the eight legs,
but it looks like there's four legs.
So they're just like extra thick.
So again, that's just how he's doing this.
He's gluing the legs together
and then he will attach them underneath the coffee table.
I'm going to measure 9 1⁄2 inches from the end
for both of them, and I'll just make a little mark.
And then I'll probably do, let's see what that is.
I'm going to mark 9 1⁄2 inches from both end
and then 4 1⁄2 inches from the sides.
So I'm in the exact same spot on all of it.
Get inside.
You just had your bath, so you can't be out here.
Okay?
You just want to ring the doorbell?
Yeah, the doorbell that doesn't work?
Who is that?
Is that you?
So these are the brackets he's using
and he ends up using six on each side.
So the inside and the outside
to just make sure it's really nice and sturdy.
The next thing he's doing is he's using an oscillator
to cut pieces off the edges.
This is going to give it a really distressed look
and make it look like it's a weathered piece of wood.
And that is really what we were going for.
If you do not have this tool, you could use a chisel.
You could use a handsaw.
You can even use a hammer.
Any kind of tool you could use to just damage the edges.
We also go over it with a sander
and just smooth everything out.
After he goes and makes all of these different cuts
and just grooves along the edges.
But I noticed the more he did that,
the more chunks he took off the sides, the more I loved it.
So if you're going for that really worn down look,
just remember the more damage you do,
the better this will look.
The color stain we are using is special walnut.
And when we were outside, I liked it.
I did think it was a little bit too dark,
but you can kind of see his technique.
He's just barely dabbing the cloth into the stain,
smearing it around.
So he's using a little bit
and kind of spreading it everywhere
to make it go a long way.
But once we brought it in the house,
your piece might look a little bit different
and ours looked more red inside.
So you'll see here in just a minute,
but I took a white wax
and I just covered the entire thing with it.
I did not wipe it off.
I let it just absorb.
You're going to see some shots
after one day of it being on here.
It totally looked different.
The color it looked the next day was my favorite.
So if you guys like this color, just trust me.
If you're using the same wood that we used
and the same stain, do this wax on the top
and your piece will look beautiful.
Again, it looks like it's a natural piece of wood
that's just been outside and it's been weathered.
So I would say the white wax
is what really helped complete this project.
The reason that I mentioned that the next day,
this is what the wood looked like
was because immediately after it didn't look like this.
And then after a full 24 hours,
the wood looked completely different.
So these shots that you're seeing here
are what it still looks like today.
Like a few days later after doing this project,
let the wax just do its thing
and it will lighten up this wood
and bring it to this really natural color.
