Hey guys, Sean with American Window Concepts.
Do you ever feel drafts coming off of your new windows?
Let's talk about that.
Let's just say that you're in your living room and you're enjoying a great book.
For me, it's how to be an installation master.
I'm noticing this is a big picture window or a door, for instance, and I'm feeling a
cold draft on my feet, but my window is closed.
Well, what could be the issue?
Couple of things.
The thing I would want to talk about right out of the gate is convection.
Convection literally is a weather system in your house.
If your window is covered, the temperature of that glass is going to be much cooler than
the ambient temperature inside the house.
So as you know, warm air always goes up.
Low pressure air goes to the ceiling, and then what it does is it makes contact with
the cool glass, cools the air, and then it makes it heavy and bring down, and then it
comes underneath and hits your foot.
And the first thing you think is, well, how in the world is this window already drafted?
Is the window installed wrong?
Maybe.
It could be that the window was installed wrong, but let's talk about something that
might be probably more accurate, which would be the temperature of the glass if it's covered
up.
You're going to see a lot of that online as well, so it's not just me talking about it.
There's way more science behind it, but the simple answer is hot air up, cools, comes
down, and hits you.
It'll move your shades.
It'll do all of that, and it would come off as a drafty or a leaky window.
So that's really all it is.
The way to combat against that, open up the shades.
Leave the shades open while you're going to be, like during the day, open everything up.
Let the temperature of the glass just warm up a little bit.
That is really going to help you when it comes to drafting or the convection, if you will.
Hopefully that helps.
If you have any other questions, you can always go online and look up convection.
There's a lot of detailed information, more about what it is that I'm talking about.
Otherwise, you can always go to the comment section, ask me a question that way, and I'll
do the best I can to give you the best answer.
