I went to Hong Kong to try out the famous BBQ suckling pig and beer and wine drunken hotpot. The suckling pig was cooked 2 ways and was by far some of the best I've ever had. The drunken hotpot was on top of a skyscraper and the theatrics, as well as the food, were excellent.
Pig Restaurant: 家全七福酒家 Seventh Son Restaurant 57-73 Lockhart Rd, Wan Chai, Hong Kong
This is the most theatrical hotpot place I've ever been to
Hi, good morning
That smells so good
I knew something smelled really good when I walked off the subway
That's what I absolutely love about Hong Kong wherever you go the aroma of food
It's just just it's always there
So when I told my friends I was coming to Hong Kong told me I had to eat the local suckling pig the restaurant
I had to go to was a place called
Seventh son, which I'm looking for right now because they cook the suckling pig in two different ways. So make it for breakfast
Here it is to suckling pig because one is just not enough. It's cut in two different ways
So this one the skin is cut off and then the fat is trimmed from the skin and it's placed back onto the pig
And this one is just chopped into pieces. So this will have a lot more of the fat on there
It's gonna be a little more greasy, but I think it's gonna be slightly more flavorful
I think from now on when I'm eating bacon for breakfast, this might be the only thing I can think of
As much as I would love to I couldn't eat these two pigs by myself
So but a bunch of people to you with me so a perfect table of ten
Well nine sorry, but we're gonna take down these two, but you guys think we can do it, right? Yeah
Look at the crispy skin and tap it
That's a good sound
So this is the pig with the fat still attached to it, like I said, this one is gonna be a little more greasy
but it's gonna be
Definitely more flavorful because of the fat content. Look at that
Whites meat under the golden crusty skin with that little layer of fat and then of course the bones here the ribs
Most flavorful bite I'm guessing outside of the skin is gonna be right here
Right where the bones are look out that's roasted and then the other pig the way they cut it
They scrape the fat off the skin and what you get here is basically a little porky chip right there
Not a lot of fat on there. So here you're really tasting the skin
So this this way of cutting it is much more emphasis on the crunchiness crispiness of skin less on the grease
So you can eat more of the pig and then of course
glistening
juicy meat
So this one what you do is you eat the skin first and then they're gonna tear the meat apart and serve the meat
Later, so this one how you eat it is you take a little slice of the pancake
Take a piece of the skin put it on top a little hoisin sauce and then just a sprinkle of sugar
And that's it
So the method of eating the pig skin, it's kind of like you would eat a Peking duck
But the only difference is there's no veggies on here, but method very simplistic first bite of bacon in the morning. Oh
My god
Wow
I've had many
Roast pigs in my day
I've never had one with skin this light and crispy before even the ones I've had in the Philippines. The skin wasn't as
Chippy as this. I mean it really takes no effort biting into this and really no greasiness whatsoever
If you ever ever want a bite of the juiciest crispiest pig skin
This is the place to go
Listen to that. It's literally like I'm reaching into a bag of pigskin chips and
Popping into my mouth. I do admit it is a little better with the hoisin sauce and a bit of sugar but on its own
Still marvelous
So now what they're gonna do after we ate the pig skin is they're gonna take this and basically tear apart the meat for us
So they chop up the pig and that's the leftover meat and that's also gonna be great eating
This roast is so well that most of the bones you can just crunch through and eat it
The meat itself is also really flavorful that flame really penetrated the skin
It penetrated all the way through because they're rotating as they're cooking and wherever that flame lit
You want to eat that? Like I said the best part right by the bone
best part
It's like eating a little porky rib
And the sweet smoky flavor is almost unbearable. The way they cook this pig
It basically tastes like the best char siu, the best ribs, the best roast pig all together in one
Basically when you walk into a Chinese barbecue shop and you see all those different types of meats hanging there
This is like eating all of them at the same time in it. It is absolutely mind-blowing
I mean the skin is definitely the best part that the highlight of the pig
but then when you eat more you get down to the meat to the bones the flavor just drowning you in this ocean of juice and
Smoke and savoriness and sweetness basically everything you love about pork
Everything you love about bacon, you'll find it in this one little bite
Things were a little blurry after after the whole suck me pig meal
I just completely fell into a coma just woke up and next thing you know, it's dinnertime. There's a hotpot place
I really really want to try because it's supposed to be one of the best hotpot places in Hong Kong
And they have a very unique broth made out of wine
Of course, I don't drink but I'm pretty excited about that and I think it's around here somewhere
Drunken pots it's kind of fitting right? Some people think I look like the guy from Drunken Master. No, I'm gonna go eat at Drunken Pot
Before I even try the hotpot
I mean you got to give it up to this place for the view. Look at that. Never ate hotpot and stirred out into this before
like seriously, I
Would not be feasting on some drunken hotpot and then go and stir down this window
Just saying but gosh, that's awesome. And here is the menu
And these are all their signature pots the drunken pot, which is their signature the ultimate drunken pot
Wow, so unlike other hotpot places I've been to inside the broth already
There's a bunch of ingredients some of them are loaded up on seafood some with lobster and truffles and there's one here
beer soup
Beer and wine is couple ingredients
You don't really find a lot in hotpot broth, but I got to try it out here and see how it is
So we'll do the drunken pot, which is their signature. Of course this pot with a beer in the wine
beef platter
Seafood platter some pork neck
Spam
egg noodles
lamb
Two different types of hot pots and this pot is gonna be lit on fire. All right, go ahead maestro
And they extinguish the fire by adding broth into the fire and our poor fire is gone
He added dry ice into it, so that's all smoky and mysterious
So this thing does the most theatrical hotpot place ever been to they got a fire show
There's a smoke show and then they seal everything off
That's cool. Like it's you might think it's a bit over the top. I loved it. This is the feast right here
This is everything everything we got for dinner
This pot is their signature drunken pot
And of course, that's why they had the whole smoke and fire show then we have their wine and beer pot over here
This is gonna be a feast for the senses the ages the elements like this is everything I ever wanted a hotpot on a table
Let's eat. Look at that whole papaya with shrimp inside. This is reminiscent of something I had in Vietnam on the side
You have the mala with fish maw on the side. Also is the lobster?
Tomato half a lobster. That's a tomato a sauté broth
And finally, we have a clear beef brisket broth this next pot as soon as I get closer
You're you you would feel a little dizzy because there's so much alcohol
Permeating from the broth and this one the corner is oxtail wine broth. Look whole chunks of oxtail
Next right beside it chicken and Chinese wine
Chunks of chicken can smell the wine from a mile away
Beside that is the clam and sake finally fish and beer Wow
I mean they do not skimp on the ingredients in these pots
I mean these pots are not cheap like just getting these pots alone
They cost about 30 to 50 US dollars and I love what they do with the Angus. Look at this
It's a meat curtain basically and behind the meat curtain
the land of hotpot and
Joining me my friend Jamie and my friend Jimin what's really cool about this place is that they give you two sets of chopsticks
You got a longer one
Where you can use to kind of get your stuff in the pot and a short one for eating. Also, this really cuts down on
Contamination so you don't get sick
First thing I got to do is try all the different broths. So excited about this
Wow, the brisket broth very peppery tons of beef flavor
The whole papaya one smells really fruity obviously
Hmm. Oh, that's good. It's basically slightly sweet papaya broth with a hint of alcohol. I could drink that as a soup right now. Oh
The flavor of the satay will just knock you off your feet that is thick and it's deep and it's delicious
the lobster tomato broth
That's really good too. Fresh tomatoes for sure and that great lobster flavor is present in every single ounce of that soup. Oh
I'm out. Oh, man guys if you're not like at least level 10 black belt ninja kung-fu
Ultimate master at spice do not order that that is spicy
Hmm love the oxtail soup
Clam broth. I don't really taste much of the clam. I taste a lot of the wine not much of the clam
The chicken wine broth
again
Don't taste much of anything. I
Think all the four wine broths
The oxtail is the best but nothing touches the signature pot
So if you come here definitely get the signature drunken pot some of the best soup bases I've ever had. I
Don't even know which one to dip it in. I love them all so much. I'm gonna do the papaya
Love that papaya broth. Beef melts in your mouth slightly sweet from the papaya
That's amazing. I want to taste the brisket that's been cooking in the brisket broth
That's fantastic. I wish they're potatoes.
I really wish their potatoes would cut a little thinner but
Spam it's gonna be awesome in that spice
Dip it in a little of my sauce
Even better I
Love these things. These are little jellies. They have zero calories if you want to lose weight eat some of this
I mean this will fill you up probably use more calories eating this and this thing has
Of course, I'm dipping in a fast. So that negates that
It's crunchy as noodle is I love it. This is the clam that's been cooking that clam broth since it sat on the table
I've been eyeing this for a while. The oxtail has been boiling in this broth
Look how easily this thing falls apart
The oxtail in the wine broth
Out of this world not a bad buy so far. This is definitely already one of my favorite hotpot experiences ever.
Oh yeah, come here, baby.
This is one of my favorite sides right here with the spam, bean sprouts, and the fish maw
Eating a hotpot is one of the few times I ever say the words. I love spam
Those of you don't like spam trust me put it in a hotpot. You're gonna love it
one of my favorite parts of hotpot
stew of potato
And this one's been stewing in the papaya mixture dunk it a little bit of my sauce
Potato but one of the best ways to eat potato ever is that
Green dumpling
Soybeans little chive little shrimp. Oh
Absolutely delicious my favorite seafood razor clam is cooked in the clam broth with wine
There's a dumpling I've been wanting to try check it out mapo tofu dumpling
All right, I can taste there's tofu in here, but really not much of a mapo tofu flavor kind of disappointing little dumpling
Now I'm gonna make it more ma and more la
I'm gonna add some nummy and spicy from my from my dipping sauce to it. Sometimes you got to help these things along
Much better noodle time
I'm putting all this into the brisket pot because my brisket broth has gained some amazing flavor
Put some brisket broth in here
Lay a few slices of beef on top
little tofu
Hot pot beef noodle soup
Noodles are still nice and al dente
That brisket broth felt like a cow sat in there for like an hour
Nothing better than slurping a little bowl of noodle soup
Drinking your broth at the same time after a fantastic
There are a few foods I can satisfy you like a good hot pot meal and probably the best broth I've had around the world
ever
Is right here ingredients are fresh as with most restaurants in Hong Kong is a little pricey
But I feel like you really got to try this because I feel like they're their broths and their soup bases in the way
They put in everything. It's very unique when it comes to hopper restaurants now, I
Know exactly what I need
My friend Melissa has been raving about this place for about the last three weeks
Every single time I mention I'm gonna Hong Kong. She's like you got to go to this place called Shari Shari
Let's try this place out. It's Japanese shaved ice
So weird. I'm not having it in Japan. I mean in Hong Kong, but
Right after a hot pot. This is exactly what you need. Oh
Sakura
So cherry blossom
That's so pretty
Look at this. It's like a giant snowball
with that like couple petals of
The blossoms fell on top of shaped like a heart
This is hojicha, which is a Japanese tea flavor and mochi on top
Let's see what all the fuzz is about
That's really nice
That's pretty darn nice, huh? Oh my gosh
Hmm
It's the meltiest
Shaved ice I've ever had in my life. It's not overly sweet. It's just really smooth. This is this is pretty insane
Wow, I
mean
It's like a combo between Korean shaved ice and Taiwanese shaved ice
You know that first day of winter
When the fluffy snow just start coming down you're trying to catch it with your tongue
It's like somebody caught a whole bowl of that and added just a bit of sweetness to it
This might be the first time that
something icy and cold
Truly warmed up my soul. All right. That was a perfect day food all day
Punctuated by amazing hot pot meal. And of course just this dessert. How come I didn't know that existed before?
Now it's time to go to bed in
Sweet food dreams all night. Guys, as always all the places I went to is listed for you in my description box below
Thank you all so much for watching. Until we meet again, see you later
