...Evidence accompanies a major Avedon retrospective at Whitney Museum of American art, documenting life and career that is at once contradictory and cohesive. Jane Livingston, the curator of the exhibition, offers a critical view of the work, from the early images of the theatre people to the remarkable photographs of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

“Avedon's photographic style evinces a tension between two opposing tendencies, she writes. “On the one hand is deeply embedded in the tradition of photography and attracted to its physical attributes. On the other, he seems unable to bow to photography's confinements.

The art critic Adam Gopnik, in an evocative biographical easy, writes: “Avedon attempts, in his white background portraits, to replace false poetry with what he sees as real poetry rooted in contradiction, visual surprises that express the complexity of character. Groucho Marx as a gentle Zen Monk, Edmund Wilson as an enraged owl, William Buckley as a cold, superior physician, making his rounds; Buckminster fuller as a Yankee general store owner, unsure in the big city, Borges looking not sage but vaguely comical in his complacent blindness, R. D. Laing As a sensitive television Talk Show Host, Isak Dinesen as the mad lady in the park, fashion editors as repositories of knowledge and caterers as repositories of soul.”

Richard Avedon’s Photographers have been shaping our view of the cultural and political landscape since the late 1940’s, yet the scope of his work and the nature of his involvement with it have never before been fully explored. Evidence: 1944-1994 provides an unprecedented view of a controversial modern master.
