I was invited by the Thai government to explore the rice culture in Thailand and visited a rice field where I got to try planting and harvest rice and then enjoy a rice themed feast! This was part of the Think Rice Think Thailand Champaign. #thailand#thai#rice#thaifood#travel
It's about 3 o'clock in the morning.
We leave the hotel at, I think, 4.45 or 5.30 or something like that, but I can't sleep
anymore.
I heard there's some breakfast downstairs at 3 o'clock, so let's see what they have.
This is probably leftover from last night, though.
But yeah, full spread, 3 o'clock in the morning.
What?
Reason 251 why I love Thailand.
You can eat whenever you want, whatever you want.
Not a lot of selection, it's just a ton of fruits, bread, the cook stuff is just very
good.
Like, this is it.
Still, I mean, expect 3 o'clock in the morning.
It's one of those rare cases in life where I'm kind of relying on fruits now.
Fruits in this country is amazing.
It's about 5 in the morning, on our way to Chiang Mai.
Pretty excited, never been to Chiang Mai before.
Today, we're doing, like, a rice spa.
I don't know what that is, but it sounds cool.
Welcome to Chiang Mai.
Stuck on a plane for about 50 minutes, not moving, so it's good to actually stretch out
a little bit.
My first taste of a rice product here in Chiang Mai.
This is organic young rice milk.
It's got kind of a funky aftertaste to it.
Maybe it's because it's not mature enough.
We are here!
Woohoo!
Thank you, thank you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Beautiful.
There's little flowers.
What kind of flower?
Jasmine, right?
Yes, it's jasmine.
I love jasmine.
Jasmine's my favorite flower.
It's my favorite tea.
It's my favorite flower.
Oh, thank you so much.
You can choose your outfit now.
This is so good.
I don't know.
It's pandan drink, right?
Oh, we're changing outfits.
Extra large.
I'm not that fat.
I'm going to change into this traditional outfit here.
What do you think?
Handsome.
Yeah?
You like this?
I should wear this on a daily basis.
Let's go ride a bike.
It's important to check the bells.
So I'm at a traditional rice village here in Chiang Mai.
This is a traditional outfit worn by rice farmers in Northern Thailand.
We're going to the village now.
We're actually going to the village.
So this is like the starting area.
This is the coolest experience.
I can't think of a better way to experience traditional Thai culture than this.
And they have set up here just a little market with a bunch of fun little foods.
So I'm going into the rice field.
I put on these shoes.
That is squishy.
Oh, she almost face planted in there.
This is not a good place to fall.
Look how deep I am.
We're being taught how to plant the rice right now.
So these are the plants.
There we go.
Pick these up.
So I take this, plant it into the soil.
That is gooey soil.
That's my rice right there.
I'm going to come back in the harvest season.
I'm going to eat that.
Did you just step on my rice?
Did you just step on the rice?
Nobody step on my rice.
I don't know what I enjoy more, touching the gooey soil or stepping on it.
I wonder if I stay in this soil long enough, I'll turn into a plant.
And this soil is very special soil for growing rice.
It'd be kind of fun to actually lay down in this because I bet that feels really good.
There's water buffaloes over there.
I'm going to try beating the rice.
So how long do I do this before the rice falls out?
Oh, the emperor rice.
I salute you.
What they're doing right now is de-husking the rice.
So they're beating the rice.
And then when he tosses the rice in the air, the husk just kind of float away in the wind.
After this, you actually get rice that ends up on your plate.
They have to do this many times to make the rice really white.
And people don't like eating the brown rice before because that was the rice only served to prisoners.
Random rice facts there for you.
So after the second process where we flush the rice out,
now this is de-husking the rice.
They do it so much better.
I'm going to eat that off the ground, I swear.
Just like the Chinese saying,
it means every grain of rice did not come from yeast.
So yeah, don't waste your rice.
Okay, there's tons of basically rice dishes all around for lunch.
And I'm going to start on this end.
She's steaming the rice right now.
Thank you.
I've never roasted a rice cracker before.
I barbecue a lot of stuff in my day.
Never ate rice cracker before.
I feel like I'm the one being barbecued right now.
A little salty.
You can tell it's extremely crispy, right?
Creamy.
Very good rice cracker.
Made by yours truly.
This might be the best cracker ever.
Oh, Logan juice. That's awesome.
This is so cool.
So this is my rice feast.
I can't say I labored,
but it's kind of cool to see where everything sort of came from,
from the start to finish.
You know, I can never understand why girls pay thousands of dollars for a purse,
but if it was filled with food,
I might be okay with that.
If you love rice as much as I do,
this is paradise.
Curry, rice noodles, a little drumstick.
Oh, that kicked things off real well.
Spicy, creamy curry.
Couple different types of noodles.
The crispy noodles soaked in all that great curry already.
It's so deceptively spicy because it's very creamy and milky.
And then you don't feel the heat until it gets you,
like right here.
So it's made its way down your throat.
Kiki rice noodles.
Almost better version of pad thai.
Wow, the rice is so chewy and soft and everything about this dish.
Such great flavors.
This is like a wonderful transformation of rice.
Rice noodles, one of my favorite things in the world.
Noodles with little bits of pork, peanuts.
A little on the sweeter side.
I'm just blazing through all these dishes.
This is like a rice, I think a rice cake slash egg dish.
I'm dipping this in my curry.
Just saying.
I think that's a good move.
This is just a pure rice cake.
This is a really dense food item.
It's a little, it's toasty on the outside.
It's a little salt.
Like a mix between a mochi and a crispy rice cake.
It's got that nice fresh rice flavor.
I love it when things go crunchy.
I'm gonna dip this in the curry as well.
Curry rice lollipop.
I think it's multicolored rice.
Colors come from different spices and ingredients.
Like pandan, butterfly pea flower.
Which is like such a popular ingredient here in Thailand.
And this is also a very dense rice ball.
Very aromatic, you can taste the different flavors.
But this I feel like I also need.
God, I'm so glad I have this curry to dip things in.
Yeah, that makes it a lot better.
Finally, this dessert is made from the multicolored rice as well.
With a lot of logan.
Oh man, this is so good.
I love you coconut milk.
And we got the nice multi-aromatic rice.
Mixed in with a simply delicious fragrant coconut milk.
In the logan.
It doesn't get much better than this.
Best way to experience culture, is taking a bite out of it.
And today, I've definitely done that and more.
This is what I love.
Going to a culture I'm not entirely familiar with.
And get to experience something first hand so intimately.
I mean there's nothing more intimate than eating.
He doesn't look that happy, does he?
Are the water buffaloes supposed to push me here or something?
I'm not really sure what's meant to happen.
But all I know is if you lean back, you'll be sleeping with a water buffalo.
Leaving the rice fields.
It's pretty sad.
Now, going to a spa.
A rice spa.
It's the Oasis Spa.
Because when you're in Thailand, you gotta get a Thai massage.
So check this out.
They're going to cover us with mango.
And then we're going to also be covered with oil after that.
I did this once last time I was in Thailand.
I remember it hurting.
First thing you get.
Towel.
Ice tea.
Pandan.
After a long day in the rice fields.
This feels pretty good.
The last time I got a Thai massage, I got it gentle and soft.
Because I'm a wuss when it comes to massages.
You know, I didn't want to be the guy who didn't get the standard.
But they did teach me.
If it does hurt too much, say the words,
And they'll gentle it down.
Ooh, that's a private room.
So this is everything that's here.
This is your underwear.
Some of your shower stuff.
And this is where you put your wallets and things.
Your phone.
Oh, my shoulders hurt.
I mean, it's good, but
I'm a wuss when it comes to massages.
At our hotel in Chiang Mai.
Just got my room key.
Check it out.
My birthday!
So, it's basically an apartment.
Oh, my gosh.
It's huge.
Living room.
Oh!
Oh, yes.
Oh, snackaroo.
Whoa, this is awesome.
Welcome to Chiang Mai.
This is so cool.
I don't even know what this is.
But I love it already.
Wow.
King size bed.
Perfect.
Pajamas.
Bathroom.
I've never seen them full like a floor rug before.
Balcony.
Today was such an incredible day.
Everything about today.
From the rice fields, to the food, to
the massage, which
I still feel it.
And it's not over.
I'm gonna go take a shower and let's go grab dinner.
We're at a very traditional northern Thai restaurant.
And we're gonna have something called Kando.
Which is gonna be a big pile of food sitting in front of us.
Ooh.
At night this could be really spooky.
Just saying.
Oh, it just touched my head.
Change of clothes?
Oh, sure.
Yeah.
I look like Kung Fu Masters a little bit.
I love how in Thailand you just smell jasmine all over the place.
This outfit is called Thai Lana because
the northern part of Thailand used to be part of the Lana Kingdom.
And this house is actually built in the traditional Lana Kingdom style.
That's really good.
That's like almond flavor times 20.
That is great.
These look so realistic though.
Like
I don't know if I could be here at night.
These are little coconut milk pancakes.
And I had these.
They're little dessert items.
And you sprinkle a little salt on them.
I love these.
Toasty.
Crispy on the bottom.
Soft on top.
Slightly sweet.
Oh, just nice coconut flavor.
Sweet rice coconut balls.
God, this makes me happy.
This is fermented rice noodle with pork.
There's pork blood in here.
Literally, it's like an open little market.
And everything is cooked fresh.
God, this is such an amazing experience.
And the pork noodle,
you see the blood,
tomatoes,
and slices of pork.
Broth looks like a bunch of chilies in there.
I bet you it's gonna be a little sour, spicy.
This is awesome.
Man, this is good.
Tons of dried chilies in here.
Wow.
Yeah, this will clear up any sinus problem you have
for the rest of your life.
All that nice porky flavor.
Blood is something you gotta get used to
if you've never had it before.
This is majestic right here.
Yeah, this is some young rice dessert
with pandan.
Oh my god.
This is so good.
Young rice with coconut, pandan,
a little brown sugar.
This is all about the fragrant rice flavor right here.
I don't know what this is,
but I need one.
Check it out.
Sticky rice inside.
Don't bite into this like I did,
like a Neanderthal.
Sticky rice.
I think there's some jujubes in here as well.
Oh, papaya salad.
Oh, sweet.
This is my first papaya salad in Thailand
since I've been here.
Oh, god.
This is so good.
That is a very traditional flavor of papaya salad.
Just a ton of heat.
Sweet, sour, spicy.
God.
Mind-blowingly good.
I'm getting some Thai noodles.
Looks like some curry, chicken.
It's going inside.
Coconut milk, dry noodles going in there as well.
Thank you.
What's really upsetting me is that
I can't pace myself around food.
I have weakness.
It's my kryptonite.
Sweet.
Curry.
Crispy noodles.
This needs some papaya salad to go with it.
Oh, this papaya salad with the noodles
is just the greatest jam in food history.
Spicy peanuts and they have lime leaves in here.
I love this country.
This is different than a lot of sticky rice I've had.
It's not a very wet sticky rice.
And that's what I like.
I like my movies mushy.
I don't like my rice mushy.
Jasmine rice, brown rice,
what they call rice berry.
The black rice is a bit more texture.
Jasmine's always my favorite.
So fragrant.
Brown rice is good too.
Still, jasmine.
Right here.
Thank you.
If you get the flower,
you gotta go dance.
What a fun evening.
Alright, I gotta change out of this
and let's go walk around town.
Alright, I feel like I may have been
a little over ambitious
when I said I wanted to go out and walk around.
I'm not doing that.
I'm gonna hit the gym
and then I'm gonna go to bed.
Tomorrow, Elephant's Day.
It's gonna feel awesome.
Have a good night.
