Thank you very much. It's 15 people. 15 people and we never know. Two nights ago I did permits and I
didn't have a full group. Okay. Usually in the middle of the week it's better but then last
night they were full at 4 30. Okay. So we never know. So stick around. Thank you very much.
Okay we've made it to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We've got our trail permit. We're
a primitive trail meaning there are no markers. They only give out 15 permits. The reason for
that is to make sure that you have solitude on your route and at the bottom. It is 1.8 miles
down and back. Should take us about three hours. We're going to start about 6 30 tomorrow morning.
So like I said this is a primitive route. There are no markers. That was one of the last ones.
Really all we know is to keep going down. In fact the cairns that we saw at Long's Peak to help you
the boulder field. They actually knock those down here if they find them. They want you
to find your own way and not have that help. This is a way different concept than most hikes.
Usually you're hiking up to get a good viewpoint. Today we're climbing down.
So what's difficult about this trail? Yeah it's pretty much straight down but the dirt
is really slippery. Everything's loose. Nothing's packed. Primitive trail I guess.
We were told halfway down there's a chain to help you.
So
you have to be really careful. You don't kick rocks on the people below you.
But you just yell rock and hopefully it settles before it hits anybody.
We're a little over halfway. They said it would take about an hour and a half.
Well this is exciting. I genuinely enjoy this hike. Yeah this is a nice fun quick
challenge. I like it. Kid you not the ranger asked us to help knock those down. So I'm doing my part.
Helping out the park service.
Every step's really just a best guess. Hope for the best outcome. Still fun though.
The trail is no longer pure rock which I think is a good sign. Pretty sure we're close.
I spoke too soon.
I'm keeping it primitive.
Still having the time of my life here. Believe it or not. There's just nothing
that miserable about it. Like the last two hikes we've done. Man this is so cool.
Hour and a half is what everybody else said. Pretty accurate. We believe we found the perfect
place to have a little snack. We're just gonna sit here and enjoy this for a little while.
Perfectly good bathroom down here. It's time to make our way up.
A little harder to navigate. It's a pretty well beaten path. However there are other places to go.
Other little drainage runoffs. Little rivers that look like a trail but aren't.
I am about 80 percent sure we have gone the wrong way back up. We're just gonna keep going though
because it's a little too far to turn around and there are a lot of little paths it seems.
But I do think we're making it a lot harder on ourselves. I said 80 percent. I meant 100.
We are positive we are on the wrong trail. Great news. We found the chain. Bad news is
that means we're only about halfway up. But we are for sure on the right trail now.
That means we're to the real trail. I don't know how much farther we have to go but not much.
This has been really fun I promise. It's well worth it.
Just under three hours. It says 2.2 because we did go off trail a little bit. I don't think we
went that far off but we did. This is gonna be posted on Strava. I'll put the link below.
All of our hikes, Longs Peak, Sky Pond, those will also be on Strava and linked down below.
I can't wait to shower and eat. We both smell so bad. The smells could kill right now.
We are showered. Just got an oil change and now we have a nine hour drive to Grand Teton National
Park. It's more than likely gonna take us more than one night to get there.
Got a plan to park at the most exclusive Walmart parking lot I could find.
