A piece of Cypress I discarded when I was cutting the Cypress log I've been given is getting a chance to become more then itself.

I want to show you something that I've turned yesterday which is this holoform
like this would be better this orientation and it's a holoform on a on a leg pedestal
you can see this was made from a mulberry which I had a few trunks of
but first I'm going to show you a new tool that I got
and I hope I will use this tool today let's see if everything is in frame
so this is a new tool that I've bought obviously second hand as you can see it's not new
and this is called the Robert Sorby RS2000 hollowing system
I don't have the complete system there are a couple of small parts
that were not a part of this tool that I bought but I've got the handle with the brace as you
can see this is obviously a deep hollowing system as you can see the brace goes under the arm this
helps counter the forces of the turning this is the extension if I want to hollow even deeper
and this is very thick stock this is a really thick stock three quarter inch maybe it extends
and I can attach either here or here the actual tool I'm working with and this this set came with
actually two tools and one of them is duplicated for some reason even the person I bought it from
couldn't tell me exactly why he has two of these blades as you can see these are blades that have
a carbide tip on them and these actually are used for coring out a cone from the center of a ball
so you could make another ball it's not a coring system but it does have these two narrow very
strong and heavy duty blades so I could core at least one or two conical pieces out of a ball I'm
making and this is the actually the swan neck tool with a new cutter that I bought and sharpened
and I hope I will use this tool today will be the first time I'm using it so it might be
might be a little bit awkward but you're gonna bear with me so let's put this aside and see what
we're going to do today so since I want to try my deep hollowing tool today I've got this
quite long piece it's not very large it's about
about four inches wide it will be for the most four inches wide or 10 centimeters at the
thicker end and on the smaller hand and it's going to be like three and a half quarters
it has some checking I don't know if you can see I'm checking on both ends obviously I'm going to
try to turn those I can see a couple of cracks running here and here lengthwise we're gonna
see if we can turn those down and if not we're going to glue them back up and hopefully what I'm
hopeful to get today is actually a long and the narrow base we're gonna try
there's as you can see there's a little bit of raising here we're just gonna have to turn this
round and see if it's viable enough if it looks good enough for us to actually hollow this out
so okay so since this is end grain piece meaning that the grain runs the length of the piece I can
either use a roughing gouge or I can use my bore gouge which I'll probably do and let's start to
rough this out
obviously important to check that we're not hitting the tool rest
okay and obviously sleeves out of the way as you can see no watch and no ring let's not forget
forget our personal safety and wear a face mask and I'll be starting with my 5.8 ball gouge and
this really turned out nice this eye I'll probably gonna have to reinforce it also with
some CA glue nice colors I'm going to have to reinforce this with the super glue the minute
I finish rounding it up or else it will flare out on me I really like the shape I'll probably
go on with a straight line I thought maybe I have enough material here to flare out a little bit at
the end but I'm not sure at all let's finish rounding this up and then we'll start to see a
probably didn't see it but a small chunk from this piece I'm working on
which I'm starting to part off simply flew off and hit me right in the face mask which just
comes to show you how important these face masks are I truly recommend to use a complete face mask
the one I'm using instead of using one of those safety glasses which are in my opinion are
absolutely not safe for this type of work
okay now I'm going to the crack small crack which is present here
I'm going to fill up with CA glue soon first I'm going to create the tenon so I will be able to
chuck my piece up and then I'll start filling in the places that needs treatment here along this
part and some of the smaller cracks on the top here I don't see any cracks I'm going to round off
oh there is a small crack I'm going to round it off a little bit also
I'm not going to leave it completely straight here so I'm going to
cut this down to about five centimeters I'll be able to chuck it up
okay I did a small dovetail and we're going to use this tenon to connect to our chuck and now
at this point we'll go over the cracks and places that need reinforcement and we'll
introduce some thin CA and some sawdust the dustier the better
and we're going to fill all these these cracks up so here we go
this is super thin CA and I use this because it will penetrate the cracks
and the most efficient way will just flow inside and fill the crack up
and we're going to sprinkle some some magic sawdust over it in a minute we're going to
rub the sawdust in and hopefully it will get inside the cracks and fill them up
and later when we when we will sand the wood it will absolutely look exactly like part of
the wood itself it won't look any different from the wood it would look completely natural
obviously if you have a more toned wood with different colors and tones if you're going to use
light sawdust filling cracks in the dark portion of the wood it's going to show
but then again it might also show a very nice contrast and give more interest to your piece
do that and I'll give it another round of CA
don't be shy about using as much CA as possible and some more sawdust
I wish I had a bit more dust
I should have used gloves I always tell myself use gloves when dealing with the CA
now my I don't know if you can see but my hand is completely covered with glue and
and sawdust but I guess that's part of the profession isn't it
I want a small bead at the top of the decorative ring and I'll probably also burn this
recess the light wood and a nice black burn would look nice here but I'm going to start
with the sanding and then when the sanding is done if I like the shape then I will
it's obviously recommended for a piece this long to use some kind of a rest
that grabs the piece from all sides completely went out of my head right now the name for it
I'll probably put it down here in the video this type of rests I think it's called in Italian it's
a moon shaped or a half moon shape
so let's start sanding this and I'll bring you back when this is sanded and we're ready for the
finish we have this uh or are going to be vase sanded it down to 600 it's very smooth I really
like the way this wood becomes so smooth and the grain that comes out it's really really nice
let's see if I can focus a little bit more the grain is really nice there's some spotting colors
that are starting to show up this is our our treated crack that is full of sawdust and
it's a little bit white now from the sanding and it's going to go back dark once I apply the
the wax I really like the way the bead came and we'll burn this before we apply the wax
I'm going to use a piece of wire attached between two dowels and I'm going to spin it and then
just press the wire into the recess and the friction will burn a nice black line in there
and that's it very quickly as you can see and I think that with the
with the bright color of the wood it gives a very nice contrast and it separates this bead
that's all there is to it this looks really nice you can see a little bit of the reflection of the
light here but the angle and the lighting and the straight form of this shape does does not
create a lot of glare so you won't be able to see the finish very well but it is very very nice
okay let's clear everything up
so let's change the angle and start hollowing
think about you when I'm making a mistake when I'm screaming at a man
through the plexiglass of a store on the corner of my favorite avenue
my best friend's digging through his pockets for change as he counts
turn with the smile on my face I say I know that things are tight do you have enough for two
say these types of things and here is the vase I placed it here so you could see
the difference in sizes compared to other things you've seen me turn this is if you remember
it's the oak and amp vase which gave me a lot of trouble to hollow it out
with the tools I had when I made this this is a small off-center multi-axis turning
which I did as a test one of my first tests in that technique so obviously it's not finished it's
not even in the right shape but that was a test and our vase would you look at that
I am definitely you can see my hand so you can see the the size of this of this thing it's
about two-thirds of the way hollowed so it's quite deep you can put whatever you want inside flowers
or anything it's actually beautiful as it is without anything in it
the lip the wide lip which goes inside and then hollows you can't really see anything
there's not enough light here but here is the rim here is the bead that we burned
and the vase itself beautiful grain beautiful color I simply adore this wood you can see this is
the eye you remember this with a little bit of spalting colors
absolutely beautiful grain beautiful color and a really really nice wood to work with
I would recommend it
cypress absolutely beautiful if I might say so
I hope you enjoyed this video and come back to my shop soon
