I love you. You're like the duck angel of Vietnam. Oh, look at that thing sizzle.
Hey guys, it's Mike Chen here in Saigon. I've been here for a few days now. I've had some
of the best pho I've ever tried in my life. Great hot pot, beautiful breakfast. But one thing I
always wanted to do is just simply walk around and try the variety of street food scattered
across the city. So today, that's exactly what I'm going to do. I'm going to start off with
District 10. Going to a place that's supposed to have some amazing fried quail. In this place,
they make fried quail fried in butter. There's three massive cauldrons of oil here, and he's
just scooping entire quails into the oil. And check this out. This looks like quail gizzards,
and these are just sliced half quails. Come on. All right, let's go find a place to eat this.
Wow. They give me an entire baguette. Looks like veggies, some papaya, cucumber, chilies. And this
is actually two different dips. You could either dip it in here, which looks like there's a lot
of chilies in here already, or you could dip it in the salt and pepper and some lemon. Take a little
quail. Look at this. Man, that's tender. I'm just going to dip it in this sauce first. I have no
idea what the sauce is right now. Oh. Oh, that's tender. I think the quail was marinated in some
sort of sweet sauce before it got into the oil. There's a lot of soy sauce in here. It tastes like
fried chicken, like a tiny little fried chicken. I want to try this in the salt and pepper.
Wow. Actually, I like that a lot better because the marinade is pretty sweet. It's definitely
super flavorful. You need a bit of citrus here. I don't even think you need the salt and pepper.
Just a little bit of lime juice. That's pretty perfect. Great value for two bucks.
My next stop is District 3. I'm here on this really popular street called Winged Young
Hing Street. And this is where you're going to find a lot of different food stalls, a lot of
restaurants. Great place to get your street eats on. All right. This looks pretty cool. This looks
like a bunch of stuff wrapped in banana leaves. And it's actually a lot of cakes. So there's sticky
rice. There is pork. There is beef. The beef one, I think, is called jabal. Jabal? Yeah. And look at this.
And it literally looks like a fish cake. I'm trying to break it in half. And it's just like so flexible.
It smells great. Steamed inside this banana leaf. And it has that beautiful aroma. And this thing
is very stretchy. It's a little rubbery.
Oh, it's absolutely delicious. I thought it would taste like a fish cake, which tastes good,
but the flavor is really mild and a little bit fishy. This, first of all, incredibly fragrant.
And it's a little snappy. I'm chewing it. It's got a chewy texture. Huge beef flavor. And what I
love is this. Check this out. It's got little specks of, I think this is pepper. So you're
taking a bite and you just get that nice infusion of peppery flavor as well. This on its own is
already ridiculously good, but I think it will be even better if you roast this over a fire. I mean,
I wish they had this in the US. So next time I go camping, instead of hot dogs, stick it on a tree
branch, roast it, dip it in some hot oil. This will make your whole camping trip. That little hot
dog thing was insane. But now I'm really thirsty and I see a fresh orange juice stand across the
street. Now, now the difficult part is actually crossing the street without dying. I'm just gonna
put out my, my hand. This is the international sign for don't run me over with your motorbike.
Guys, this is really interesting. These look like oranges that are not ripe yet because,
well, they're green. Oops. I did not mean to destroy her crop, but this is what oranges
look like in Vietnam. So I'm gonna have fresh orange juice made from these oranges. I think
this in Vietnamese is, uh, uh, uh, yes. And she's grabbing the oranges. One, two, three, three
oranges. Whoa. Can I see that? Just one second. Look at this. It's beautiful. I would never expect
like this orange of a color inside oranges that are green. And she's just juicing it by hand.
And that's it. Freshly squeezed orange juice in a bottle of ice.
That's beautiful. I don't know who he is.
It's a little tart, also really sweet. I had the option of adding more sugar into this,
but I just wanted the way it is. And naturally, it's a little pulpy. I feel healthier already.
This, this cancels out the entire gold hotpot, right? I think so. I'm here for this. Uh, this
is fresh winter melon juice. I figured it has some orange juice. Now I want some winter melon
juice. Look at this winter melon. It looks like a python. The process is literally like how you
buy like a milk tea in the U.S. Definitely get it with the jelly. I love walking by food stalls
where, where there's charcoal. In this place, this looks really interesting. All this seafood
selection, I can order anything I want and they make it for me. I'm gonna just see what they
think is the best for what I order. So I'm just gonna point to some random stuff.
So I got some, uh, some crab, some clams, uh, oh scallops. They're grilling the scallops right
here. And what's really cool is that my friend here, he tells me he can make, he'll make the
half the scallops for me with cheese and half of it the Vietnamese way. I don't, I don't know what
that means, but I'm excited to find out. My other seafood is just being stir-fried in a lot of
chili. And that is definitely the way that Vietnamese people typically eat it. My clams
are cooked in some little, little lemongrass, um, some chilies. I'm just gonna try this right now.
Oh, oh yeah. Cream cheese. Oh, that is really good. I love cheese and scallops because the
scallops are sweet. Very delicious. That cream cheese is beautiful. All right, I'm gonna take
all that. I'm gonna go sit down. Thank you. My buddy over there says I gotta eat this with fish
sauce. So, oh, it does taste better with fish sauce. Before when I tried it without the fish
it was still good, but it lacked a little bit of flavor. All I was really getting was the spring
onions. Now it's more complete. Love the crunch factor with the peanuts too. I might like this
one better than the one with cheese. This I'm extremely excited about. Look at this. All I see
is this chili and I think, um, little bits of salt on top. Perfect morsel of crab claw. I'm gonna go
ahead and dip it in the chili and salt. Roll that around in there. Get it nice and dirty.
Oh, this is filthy good. That crab is so ridiculously sweet. Got little bits of salt.
It looks really spicy. It's not overly spicy. So it really doesn't distract you from that
beautifully sweet crab meat. And look at this. This thing is just bombarded with
lemongrass and I just want to take a clam, soak it in some of that soup.
My favorite thing here. This soup is fantastic. Just tastes like everything good about the ocean,
you know? Oh, this thing is a little spicy, a little citrusy, a little sweet. It's one of the
best things I ate tonight. This is really interesting. So they took the meat out of
the conch and they cooked it and they stuffed it back inside. And it looks like it was cooked
with a lot of chili. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. This is the spiciest thing I ordered. I mean, it's got
that delicious chewy conch meat that I love, just that it was doused in hellfire. I mean,
this thing is so spicy. If you put this near your ear, you can actually hear the heat.
But this was really fun. I think my favorite is still the clams and the lemongrass broth.
But I just really enjoyed the concept of going somewhere, pointing to different things. And I
love the fact that they didn't just cook everything in one style. It's great that I
ordered four things and I got it cooked like five ways. I think I need to go back and get some
get some more of that watermelon juice. All the way from down the block, I smelled this
halfway down the block. Look at this. Roast duck. Like it's just crackling, sizzling over a bed of
charcoal. The duck grease is just dripping on the fire. The fire is lighting up from the grease of
the duck. There are more greases dripping on the fire. It's like an endless cycle of delicious
duck carousel. Just going around and around in circles. I gotta try some of this. There's smoke
coming from inside the body of the duck. And that's because there's actually herbs stuffed
inside the body. I gotta be careful because they did put the head in here and they also put the
duck butt in here. I'm gonna try to avoid the head and the butt. So I'm gonna start off with
this piece right in the middle. I'm not gonna dip this in anything. I'm just gonna eat it as is.
You guys are awesome. Yeah. You need to come to Vietnam like today. Go buy your ticket right now
and come get the stock. Might be one of the best things I had in Vietnam. Like you might
Herbs they put inside? Man, I don't know exactly what it is. All I know is that it gives me the
feels. I'm just sitting here having like a like an emotional breakdown. In the middle of a street
and people are just coming in and taking picture of me going through this emotional process. This
is what it looks like when duck almost makes a grown man cry. No additional seasoning. No
additional sauce needed. Wow. You know when food is good? When you've been eating food all day and
then you eat something that basically refreshes your hunger. This is it right here people.
Unfortunately, I gotta go. There's more things to try but let's just walk and eat.
I'm still working my way through the duck and I passed this chicken stand. Supposed to be
really good. These little yellow things, I'm pretty sure they're eggs. I love that duck so
much. I passed by that chicken place. I just had to get some and they gave me a lot. Massive bag
of salad and then they gave me this congee thing which I think has uh unhatched chicken eggs inside.
I don't know about that. Let's just focus on the chicken for now.
The meat is really springy. It's actually got a super clean chicken flavor but it has really
no taste. I think that's why they give you the sauce. Oh yeah well that changes everything.
Sauce is great. I still prefer the duck but this is really not bad. Actually pretty excellent for
chicken. I mean you can really taste the quality here. This is a really popular Vietnamese street
food. It's fried sweet potatoes and you can either get it in cheese flavor or sweet and sour.
Oh oh oh that is delicious. I like the sweet and sour powder on the outside.
Ridiculously crunchy outer shell. Beautiful ginger sweet potatoes on the inside. They're
like sweet potato fries but much much better. I think I'm reaching the end of my day today
and this this is one last dog gonna hit up. I heard this place um it's got a couple of really
interesting things. One is a rice paper salad and one is is some sort of roll.
It's rice paper. So what they do is they use a sort of a hand blender and they break apart rice
paper that's in the bottom. Then there's some Vietnamese basil. I see some roasted peanuts,
whole eggs, some papaya. What you're supposed to do before you eat it is check your bag
and just really rub it hard so everything gets mixed. And you do that because the rice paper
is actually hard so you need to get the sauce on the noodles so it kind of soften it up. There you
go. It's hard. I'm gonna put some sauce on there and then rub it some more so your rice paper
softens up a bit. But the rice paper is much softer now. I thought I might have over seasoned
this but this is pretty good. The sauce is nice and sweet and the flavor integrates well with the
dry seafood in here. I like the fact that the egg is all s'mores and is everywhere. It is pretty fun
to eat. The overall flavor is good. You just gotta make sure to pound the heck out of this thing.
All right after that last food item I really needed something soupy or juicy so I went and
got a vegetable juice which is really out of character for me but this tastes really good.
And also I figured that after all that I ate today if I didn't have some vegetables in my system I
might just fall over before I can get back to my hotel. But guys going on street food tours is
probably my favorite thing to do in a new city. I love trying out different foods. Things I never
had before. Interacting with the people that makes the food. Just in general walking around
and having a great time. Highlight of the day definitely the duck. So if you are ever on this
street make sure to go see the duck angel and get some for yourself. Right now my stomach is full
and my soul is uplifted. So that's it for me today. Thank you all so much for watching. I'm
gonna get out of here before I get run over. So until we eat again I'll see you later.
