Hey guys, I am at JFK airport and I cannot tell you how excited I am about this trip
I'm about to take. If you follow along this vlog, you'll know on the last video
I took an ancestry test. Basically, I got a DNA kit from 23andMe. I spit in it a lot
I sent it back in and I find out I'm not a hundred percent Chinese. I'm actually 8.5 percent Korean
Also, I'm 0.8 percent Mongolian. Of course, this really surprised me because my whole life
I mean my parents are Chinese, my grandparents are Chinese, and I thought my whole life
I'm Chinese, but to actually get that ancestry report and have it tell me that I'm really only
82 point something percent Chinese blew my mind
I guess it really shouldn't be too surprising because I've always loved Korean barbecue
And what's so cool about this trip is that and I mentioned this in the last video
23andMe is actually sponsoring this video and my entire trip. So tonight I'm gonna get on a plane to Seoul, South Korea
I'm gonna stay there for about a week and then I am going to Mongolia
And what's different about traveling to Korea this time compared to last time is that this time
I'm actually going to explore my heritage, a culture that I am a part of although it is only, you know
8.4 percent, but still it just feels different. In Mongolia
I actually never even considered going to Mongolia until after this DNA test and I realized that my great-great-great-great-great
I don't know great-grandfather could have been Genghis Khan. So this is more of a ancestry tourism
If you will a deeper connection
I don't know
It's kind of like I'm going to explore a part of me that I never knew about and that is just so exciting
You know what else is cool now when I go to Korea or Mongolia and they ask me
Hey, are you Korean or Mongolian? I can be like, yeah, I am
It's just you know, very little but still yeah and also guys
I want to tell you about something else that's gonna be really exciting for you because 23andMe want to bring more
excitement to the idea of traveling based on DNA
They're giving away 23 trips to 23 winners between the days of July 12th and August 3rd
And the destinations will be based on the winners ancestry composition results
And if you take me as an example, it could be anywhere. I mean, I'm also 0.1% Native American
So for a chance to win this trip, all you got to do is buy a 23andMe DNA kit
Which is ridiculously informative and fun anyway
Or you could just sign up online for free and if you win you and a guest will get to roundtrip airfare
You'll get five nice hotel accommodations. You'll get daily spending money
Your itinerary will be customized based on where you're actually going with a total value of up to
$20,000 go to this link below
23andme.com slash Mikey Chen for more information and I'll leave the link for you guys in my description box below
So check it out. Alright guys, let's go to Korea
Flying to Seoul via Taipei, Taiwan and I'm flying on China Airlines and this time I'm in the premium economy section
It's 1 30 a.m. Right now and I think it's pretty
It's like the wood cabin of airplanes
The decor of this plane, it's very bland. It's got this, I don't know, pretty bunch of fake wood wallpaper
Not the most bright and welcoming cabin. This is premium economy seats. You get a nice leg room
For rest. I don't know what this button does
Okay, so that's pretty cool. Push this button here
I'll show you guys on the seat next to me because I don't think anyone's sitting here. So this is the first button
Comes up. Then you push this button here. Still haven't figured this whole thing out
this button
You can recline quite a bit. Also when I booked this ticket, this row was empty
So we'll see if we get lucky. It doesn't matter because it's not like you can raise these armrests and just sleep across this row
Oh, thank you
Yay, flip-flops
There's music in the bathroom. I feel like dancing. This is the first airplane bathroom I've ever been on that has a music playing
It's almost enjoyable being here. Dinner or breakfast? I don't know what I'm eating, but meal is served. Wait, actually, hang on a second
All right now
The meal is served and it is poured
That looks like it's a little bloody. Yogurt and fruit plate
Nice and toasty warm. Let's see what we got here
This is like a Taiwan special and I think we've got a little bit of pickled vegetables there and a cutesy little carrot
That tasted like I ate some sort of beef paste. This might be one of the only times in my life
I'm actually excited about the vegetables instead of the beef that's on my plate. I think for this meal
I'm gonna focus on the veggies and fruit. Mom will be proud
I just need to really cover this thing back up because that was just
Love some ice cream. Thank you
Yay, thank you. One of the perks of being an adult, you can trade your dinner for ice cream anytime you want. Only problem is
It's a solid piece of ice. This is not going well. You know what?
Whatever
This is about survival
It's around 5 a.m. In Taipei. I got a two hour really short layover in Aung San Suu Kyi
Nice breakfast. Custom made noodles, congee
It's not bad for airport noodles. That's a darn good tea egg
Wow, this this lounge is like a bat cave. It's amazing. There's a chow mein
Sausage, eggs. They prepare like beef noodle soup for you here. A beef noodle soup and a dan dan noodle soup
But I accidentally ordered two beef noodle soups. It's okay. I'll eat them both. It's got all these like cold dishes that I love
This is some gluten
Oh, tea eggs
Yes, please
It's poured over rice. This is the same thing I had on the plane. Soy milk, dim sum, and an airport lounge.
Beef
Asian potato salad. It's actually, I actually like this stuff a lot. They've got buns
Soup dumplings
More buns
Cool, they give you a xbox one here to play with
This is the menu and it's like a, it's glitter. It's glitter in the front. For breakfast we have
Eight treasure meat
sauce noodle
Sounds good to me. Got some crab chow mein
Or I can have zucchini eggs baked in cheese with bacon
Let's go for the noodles. This is only a two and a half hour flight. So they're only serving one meal here
Man, I wish I could stay for lunch. Stir-fried seafood and tofu and black bean sauce. That sounds really awesome. Let me show you around
Really big TV screen
Same, you know, wood wallpaper thingy. And this is like a little storage space with your remote, headphones
They have a little secondary storage space for your passports and wallets and this kind of stuff and this is cool
Check it out. Everything here is touchscreen. This plane is the B777-300ER
And I think it's a fairly new plane
So everything here
Is just touch control. This is the tray table
It's actually quite a lot of space here
I feel like this plane has more space than the Asiana and also the Thai Airways business class
I just realized as I'm boarding that I was in business class
They didn't even say on my plane ticket that I was in business class and I didn't book business class
I booked premium economy the whole way to Korea. So I got upgraded without even knowing
Like the guy never even told me at the counter that I was upgraded
So this is really awesome because now I got to show you guys the premium economy and business class with China Airlines
Kind of wish I was upgraded for the first leg of the trip, the longer leg of the trip, but can't complain
I
Just went through customs so
Annyeonghaseyo, welcome to Korea. I guess I'm home overall pretty smooth trip
My first time flying with China Airlines a great experience. The plane was neat the seats were comfy. Everybody was so nice
I was able to get a great night's sleep and premium economy. Then they upgraded me to business class. What's not to love?
All right. Let's go to the hotel
Wow, this is a super tiny hotel what you see is what you get just a tiny little hotel room
Well, at least I get a bathrobe
Slippers, of course every Asian hotel
And of course, I remember this thing from last time the scape ladder in case you need to you know
Propel out of your window. Oh
cookie
Well, that's kind of cool. They give you the weather forecast for tomorrow. Oh cool letter Michael Chen
I am staying at the Grand Hotel Myeongdong and they said there is a mini bar. That's free
Let me see what's inside. Oh cool
Wow
Fancy cookie some almonds some apple juice water some brownies cookies
candy
tiny bathroom
Electric toilet, of course. I booked this hotel in Myeongdong because it's really close to all the subways
I wanted access to also I wanted a place where if I just went downstairs I could have food and for this little tiny
Hotel room. It's not even cheap
This is a little over $100 a night and I actually found a lot of other hotels that look fairly nice for about 50
60 70 dollars a night, but this is the only one with the location. I really wanted
All right, first thing take a shower second thing. I need to take a nap. See you soon
Hi, good morning, I think it's it's 430 in the morning
And I just woke up because I am starving yesterday got into the hotel and I just couldn't stay awake and now I'm feeling it
I'm feeling the need for some Korean food
We're gonna go ahead and skip that. All right, there's not a lot of food options at 430 in the morning
Although in New York City, most of the Korean restaurants are open 24 hours a day
Guy seems to be looking for food as well. Although I could really use some Korean barbecue right now
Yeah, I eat barbecue at 4 in the morning. Who doesn't I think what I'm gonna have to settle for is some 7-eleven instant noodles
This place is open
Wow, it's got a lot of stuff. Ooh
Pizza King. This is a lot of coffee
I'm gonna get one of these cantaloupe milks
and of course a lot of ramen and
This guy looks like he's really happy about this ramen. So
Sure
Never thought my first meal in Korea would be instant noodles. But hey when you're hungry, you're hungry
Wow, it's spicy
That's good. I think I cooked this wrong because I added the spice pack before I added the water
I think you're supposed to do it afterwards, but still it's good. Maybe just should have came with a straw. Oh, it's yum
Hmm. Oh
That's good. All right. I think the perfect thing to do after the food is that I'm gonna go to bed again
Yeah, I guess that's it for my first day in Korea. Good night
