Hey guys, it's Mike Chen. I am here at Lima, Peru. My first time in South America. I cannot tell you how excited I am.
You know, every trip I've taken for food thus far has been in Asia, so this is my first time in a place where I'm really not familiar with anything.
There's so much to explore and I cannot wait to start.
First off, right here, I just got off the plane. I am at Puro Peru. And Puro Peru means, well, pure Peru.
That's because they have over 150 traditional Peruvian dishes in there.
First trip, all-you-can-eat buffet. We're not kidding around. We're hitting it hard right off the plane.
And for some reason, I don't know why it is, although I ate a lot of food on the plane, I'm starving.
I don't know whether it's because I'm just so psyched to be here or I'm so psyched about a Peruvian buffet.
Whatever the reason, I'm starving. There's a buffet. Let's go eat.
Guys, it's beautiful here. I mean, I don't know if they'll allow me to move in.
I would rent a table here if I could. The place is very spacious.
It's got a beautiful marina, aqua vibe to it. The ceiling's made out of bamboo.
And that's just the interior. I haven't even got to the food yet.
I'm a little overwhelmed right now. But you know what? Food and buffets, that's a universal language.
Let's go check it out.
We're gonna get started with the salad bar. I see salad. We're gonna just bypass that.
But this is really interesting. This is potatoes with sauce.
And these are two different types of sauce. One is spicy, one is not.
Gotta give this a try. Biggest glass of Bloody Mary I've ever seen.
Next up, this is the ceviche station. I don't really eat a lot of raw stuff.
But this is really interesting. This is potatoes with chicken with potatoes.
So basically a potato chicken sandwich and a seafood salad here.
This stuff, I can go to town on. Let's see what else.
We are at, this is the authentic Peruvian section.
This is where I'm gonna really, really spend a lot of time.
We're gonna get to know each other pretty well.
This is pretty interesting. This is roasted Peruvian corn.
It's kind of like the Chinese roasted peanuts, at least the cooking method.
Payadas, which kind of just looks like lo mein.
This is supposed to be really good. This is spicy chicken.
And adobo. Wow, I know adobo is pork. That looks delicious.
Roasted chicken with rice. Yeah, I am so excited about this.
But let's keep, let's keep scouting. We don't want to miss anything.
And this, this is where my journey for this meal is gonna come to an end.
I'll be back because there's some tres leches cake.
Bunch of pudding. I don't even feel like I can talk anymore.
My mouth is just filled with saliva.
Oh, check this out. It says picarones. Picarones, right?
And this is, this is a Peruvian donut.
You're gonna make one for me? I love you.
I mean, I don't, I don't want that to be too boring because we just met each other, but.
This is gonna be the first thing I'm eating in Peru.
Like this, this Peruvian donut.
Which is fitting, right? Because it's breakfast.
I feel like I'm a five-year-old. I'm seeing this and just, I don't even know what to do with myself right now.
All right, we're really close to the meat station.
So let's go visit the meat station really quick.
Then let's devour this.
That, that is beautiful. Beautiful.
Thank you. Gracias.
Oh, the chickens.
I'll be back.
I gotta, I gotta pay some attention to my, to my donut that just came out of the fryer.
But I'm gonna come back for this. 100%.
And I just noticed they brought over some plantain sauce.
I see some scallions in there.
And definitely a lot of spice.
A little salty. Really spicy. Very onion-y.
That is fantastic. But, donut.
I hope you can tell how happy I am right now.
That's delicious.
This thing is so airy. Also, the texture, a little chewy.
But that syrup. If you guys weren't watching right now, I might just lick that.
Extremely crispy on the outside.
Most tender thing on the inside.
All right, let's go get some more food.
Potatoes. I'm gonna put this directly on the potato.
A little extra sauce.
Oh, look at this corn salad.
I'm not supposed to just eat that, right?
Yeah, please. Thank you.
Round one.
I'm starting with a bunch of light stuff.
Some ceviche, some salad.
Really want to try this potato in sauce.
Oh, hang on a second.
I just saw a guy walking around with half of chickens.
I need half a chicken.
The skin is nice and crispy.
Too dry.
I'll be honest.
The chicken meat is a little dry.
But the skin. The skin is crispy.
Flavored perfectly.
I feel like it's because he's been walking around with the chicken a little too long.
I need a fresh piece.
I'll tell you guys what I think.
I mean, I wanted to try this potato with cheese sauce.
That is delightfully refreshing.
The sauce is a little minty.
Not too spicy.
A little bit of heat.
Really creamy.
It's a patacan.
Potato and chicken and potato.
This is so, so good.
It tastes like extremely well-seasoned mashed potatoes with sort of like really light chicken salad on the inside.
Wow.
And it all combines in your mouth into this smooth, delicious, velvety, potato-y, chicken-y treasure.
This potato tastes like Morgan Freeman talks.
I got a bunch of different ceviche.
It's like a lime-y seafood bomb.
Octopus, shrimp, calamari.
So fresh, it's about to jump out of my mouth.
I know if you want ceviche, you gotta come to Peru.
But this is ridiculous.
Bingo.
So far, this trip blew away all my expectations.
I mean, I knew it was gonna be good food.
But at a buffet, eating some of the best Peruvian food I've ever had.
Granted, I haven't had Peruvian food all that often.
But still.
Oh, so good.
If I lived here, I'd come here every day.
Like, every single day.
Come here.
Have a plate of food.
Wow, that sweet potato is good.
Oh, it's like candied sweet potato.
And I'm not even like a quarter of the way through this buffet yet.
Let's keep going.
Next, let's hit up the traditional Peruvian dishes.
Definitely some of this stir-fried corn.
Ooh.
Stuffed red pepper.
Looks like scallop potatoes and cheese.
I don't know if this is very Peruvian, but sure.
Some catapucra.
I'm not really sure what's in here.
I see big chunks of meat.
That's always a good sign.
I've been eyeing this chicken.
Looks like a chicken curry.
Cacao.
And supposedly has beef stomach.
I love beef stomach.
Definitely some of this adobo.
For sure.
Oyokitsu.
I see some beef.
I think this is potato.
Oh, and this.
I've been eyeing this so much.
It's borderline becoming creepy.
And I think I'm just gonna take that chicken leg.
Yeah, it's got my name written all over it.
This looks like just big chunks of beef.
Round two.
Meat is officially invited to the party.
I know I kind of piled a lot of stuff on here,
but I just couldn't resist.
I mean, I see something.
I just gotta have it.
This is Peruvian bell pepper.
Let's see what's in here.
Some cheese.
Looks like beef.
Let's put the hat back on.
And we're gonna cut into this.
Oh!
Yo, that's a lot of juice.
The pepper, a little sweet.
Delightful crunch.
Love the texture.
It's smoky hot.
That bite did not disappoint.
I've been eyeing this ever since I got in here.
And to answer your question,
yes, it is as delicious or even more so than it looks.
This is, if I remember correctly, sicko.
And it's beef.
I'm a little worried because it's a little tough.
I don't like it when my beef's really tough on me.
And guess who does, right?
It is a little dry,
but just like the chicken,
wow, this flavor is strong.
I taste cilantro.
I put a wine sauce.
A little overly salted.
I like stuff like that.
I think this will go really good with rice.
You get some of the beef, you get some of the sauce.
I think that's how you eat this.
I need some starch.
And this is the cao cao.
This just looks like potatoes,
like very well-stewed potatoes.
I think it's okay.
Not my favorite thing today.
I forgot what this is.
This is just some kind of pork I got.
I need to identify that dish.
Because I need to go back for seconds.
I may be thirsty.
The adobo, I'm kind of worried this might be a little dry too.
It's not.
It's really not.
That's tender pork.
It looks a little dry on the outside,
that's why I was a little worried.
But, look at this.
It's falling apart like me watching Forrest Gump.
This is a really popular Peruvian dish.
This is chicken,
and it looks like I mentioned curry sauce,
but it's actually sauce made from yellow pepper.
Every so often, you meet like a life-changing dish.
That was it.
Changed my life.
I have like one more bite,
and then I'm immediately going back for seconds on that.
Oh, that is so yummy.
Chicken, super tender.
Smoky flavor from that yellow pepper.
And it's also creamy.
It tastes like the inside of a super smoky, delicious,
and I'm not trying to compare the two,
because I don't think I can compare.
I'm only telling you what's coming to my mind.
Imagine the inside of the most delicious chicken pot pie you've ever had.
Add the smoky flavor,
make it tastier by like a thousand,
and maybe that comes close to this dish.
Good lord, that was good.
Last thing on the plate, chicken with rice.
I'm still thinking about the other chicken.
I don't think any other chicken can compare
after I had that transformative chicken.
This chicken comes with rice and cilantro,
and I'm mixing some of these little roasted corn.
I think I like that rice more than I like the chicken.
It's too bad because the chicken is tasty,
but after I had the chicken and the pepper sauce,
nothing else really compares anymore.
That dish 100% spoiled me when it comes to chicken.
But I gotta get some more right now.
Had to get another plate of this chicken.
And I feel like a lot of these dishes I just had,
they would go much better with rice,
because a lot of them were overly seasoned, overly flavored.
And I feel like that's on purpose,
is to make it a better companion with this.
I could just like eat this one chicken dish.
All day.
And the sauce really mixes perfectly with the rice.
I mean, this is just a holy matrimony right here.
Number one colo of Peru.
I love, I actually really love this.
Let's keep going.
We're gonna go get some meat.
So I just ordered beef hearts and pig.
Spanish really sucks, so.
I mean, I know, I know.
But I need the meat.
I don't know what this is.
I need some.
I think it's sauce for the meat.
We're ready to go.
This meal just keeps getting better and better.
I got another piece of the chicken,
just so I can see whether I got a bad piece,
or they're all kind of dry.
And I got a couple different,
different sauces here for the chicken.
I just want to see if this chicken is,
is a little juicier than before.
Dip it in the spicy sauce.
Still dry.
Oh, that sauce is good.
The white meat part,
it's just gonna be a little dry.
But this,
is delicious.
Like all that,
the meat's a little crispy.
The skin is definitely crispy.
That's all flavor right here.
This is a flavor week.
I wish I could just,
just get this.
I don't even need the chicken breast.
Just this.
So good.
But if you eat the chicken,
100% good, the sauce.
This is chancho,
fried pork.
I had this in New York.
The characteristic is,
the skin,
let me tap it for you.
That's supposed to be insanely crunchy,
which it is.
And then,
you see the layers right here?
Crunchy skin,
little layer of fat,
meat.
And I like to just take a bite like this,
and get that nice crunch on the outer layer.
You hear that loud and clear, right?
So good.
Sometimes when some restaurants cook this,
the outer layer is crispy,
but it's also like really hard to chew.
But not this.
You crunch it through.
Oh, that's so cool.
Delicious food.
Awesome entertainment.
I love this place.
Almost made me forget about my pork though.
I'm gonna dip this in a little chimichurri.
Hats off to that.
My beef heart,
dip it in the chimichurri.
According to Chinese logic,
eating this,
is gonna make me more kind.
Wow, that is nice.
If you've never had a heart,
you really should examine yourself,
and also maybe talk to the Tianmen or something.
But seriously,
heart meat is very lean.
And this piece right here,
smoky,
delicious,
charred,
broiled flavor.
Yeah, Burger King should strive for this.
That is a juicy heart.
Alright, you know what?
I'm gonna wrap this up,
and I think I'm ready for some dessert.
This is three note cake.
Gotta have this.
I'm gonna make her really tired,
because I basically want one of everything.
And check this out.
This is made from purple corn.
This looks like little cookies.
But before dessert,
I gotta go another round to ceviche station.
This is so unbelievably good.
Gracias.
Dessert, I'll get right to ya.
Oh, the ceviche.
Everything here,
especially this.
It's one of the best things I had today.
This chicken and potato.
Apple of my eye.
You guys really need to come here and try this.
So good.
Alright.
Guys, calm down to this.
This is pudding made from pichu berry.
Wow.
It's like eating air.
That's flavored.
And it jiggles.
Mmm.
It's like 20,000 little air sockets inside.
And you chew, it all collapses.
It's literally like eating flavored air.
In a physical form.
This is so good.
This thing kind of looks like it has caramel inside.
Sitting on a couple of crackers.
This is really sweet.
But holy genie,
Craig is just light.
So good.
This is a three note cake.
Look at that.
Already looks so good.
Wow.
Taste the milk.
Feel like there's a little alcohol in here too.
Oh, I need some water.
That is really sweet.
I'm not complaining here.
Okay, it was so good.
So far,
everything on the dessert plate
is blowing my mind.
Mango pudding.
I love the mangoes here.
Even the mango pudding is good.
I think it might not be that good.
It's ridiculously good.
I think this is the last one on my plate I haven't tried yet.
This looks like it has strawberries inside.
Mmm.
Oh, this is delicious.
It's actually quite chewy on the outside.
Inside is just a melty mess.
And this is the last thing.
This is a dessert made from purple corn.
It looks like there's fruits inside.
That's delicious.
It's a little funky.
A little bit.
Because it's a little corn starchy.
But I dig it.
Not too sweet.
The fruits on the inside has got a nice chewy texture.
You know what?
Let's take this
and maybe add a little pudding
on top of my strawberry cake.
And then just take a spoonful of that.
I love a mix and matching.
Mmm.
Everything on that dessert bar,
nothing I didn't like.
I don't know if I'm suffering from like just
initial Peruvian food euphoria
where everything tastes good to me.
I don't think that's the case.
But there wasn't that much I didn't love here.
And this place is not a cheap place in Peruvian standards.
It's about 25 US dollars.
25 to 30 US dollars.
But for all the selection,
all the traditional Peruvian fare that you get,
the quality in which it's made,
and I look around and I don't really see many tourists here.
I see mostly locals.
And that's not counting the live music,
the live dancing,
the atmosphere.
And usually I'm not really into ambience
when it comes to food places.
I just want things to taste good.
But here, I think it's really just about the whole entire experience.
I mean, I love the food here.
I also really enjoyed eating here.
It really made me feel like I'm in Peru.
Anyway, great first stop on this food adventure.
I am so psyched up,
even though I am so full.
I've just been bombarded with full sneezes for the last 20 minutes.
And this, I just feel so happy,
so fulfilled,
so excited about the food adventures
that's still to come on this trip.
Guys, as always,
the information for this place is listed in my description box.
Highly recommend this buffet.
All-you-can-eat buffet,
traditional Peruvian food.
Gotta try this if you are ever in Lima.
Thank you all so much for watching.
And until we eat again,
which will be very soon,
I'll see you later.
