YOU NEED TO TRY THESE TOAST IDEAS (Avocado, Whipped Cheese,Pimiento, Shrimp Toast)
This is my new favorite.
This is like pizza.
If it gets better and better, that's a good thing.
So I know that toasts and sandwiches in general have never been extremely popular in the Philippines.
Well, except for like burgers and stuff.
But I know a lot of people consider them mostly just as snacks.
But I think they're an integral part to a healthy diet.
And if you make them unique enough and interesting enough, they can be really delicious and extremely filling.
So today, we have three taste testers coming in to prove just that.
That sandwiches and toasts in particular, so just one piece of bread, can actually be delicious, nutritious, and filling.
So I'm David Epadua, and I'm a researcher.
And I like sandwiches, so I'm here.
Hi, I'm G Cornby.
I'm a social development professional.
I like food, and I climb for fun.
Hi, I'm Victor Gonzalez.
I'm a producer.
And I like food, but I'm heavy on comfort food.
So I'm not too keen on exploring other food.
But yeah, we'll try.
I think they can be exciting.
So it depends on how you do it.
They're convenient.
This morning, I had Dutch lunch.
So it's just bread with raw ham.
I'm not a fan of toasts.
Breakfast in general.
But usually, when I eat toast, I always eat it with condensed milk.
Today, we're going to be working with Monde Fluffy Wheat Bread.
It is surprisingly fluffy.
I don't know about you, but I've always eaten wheat bread.
And usually, you get kind of like this grainy texture.
This is really light and fluffy, which makes it very pleasant to eat.
Just like white bread.
You know, you love white bread because it's so soft.
You can kind of squish everything together.
You get that exact same thing here, except you get added fiber and the benefits of protein.
So it's a much healthier piece of bread to have in your diet.
And it just showcases that healthy eating can be really interesting and unique.
It can also be really tasty.
It doesn't have to be boring.
Avocado toast is nothing new.
And you can make it in very traditional ways.
But by making a whipped avocado toast, it really does change the game.
And it pairs perfectly with our fluffy wheat from Monde bread.
So this is a really simple recipe.
All you have to do is blend some avocados with some sour cream, a little bit of salt.
You can also add kind of like lemon juice and stuff if you want.
We can keep it nice and simple.
Then we're just going to toast the bread by spreading some butter over it.
You can also kind of run a piece of garlic cloves in there if you want to kind of have that flavor.
But at the end of the day, it's a really simple, delicious toast.
So this is the new Monde wheat bread variant.
Look how springy it is.
Look how light it is.
Kind of press like that.
It bounces back.
Let's give it a try.
Very subtle.
I think even if our taste testers here prefer white bread, they'll try this.
They won't see the difference.
So creamy.
I actually prefer this over like a chunky avocado toast.
I like my avocado mustache.
Let's see what our taste testers think about this.
Avocado toast is super trendy, right?
I feel like everyone makes it.
But I think there's a better way of making it, which is whipped avocado.
It hasn't really kind of gotten around yet.
And it's basically avocados that are mashed and then mixed with some sour cream to get them fluffier.
So they become more like a spread.
I also don't like avocado.
I don't like avocado.
Alone.
But with this one, the toast seems to balance out.
Yeah, I like the rock salt.
I think the texture, it changes, right?
The other time I made it, I just mashed the avocados.
So it kind of makes it more interesting, I think.
I like it.
Move on to dish number two.
I'm so happy that hot honey is finally becoming a trend.
It is one of the most delicious things you could make.
And it's really simple.
Get the rawest, purest, acidic kind of form of honey that you have.
Add in some red chili flakes.
And then to just kind of loosen things up in the pan, a little bit of apple cider vinegar.
Mix it all together.
This should feel less viscous than your regular honey.
Bring that just before it simmers.
And then we'll take it off.
So whipped feta has been trending.
So I thought, why not try and make whipped queson pute?
And it actually really works.
So all you have to do is crumble up your fresh queson pute.
And then blend that in a food processor with a little bit of sour cream.
You don't have to season it because queson pute is really quite salty.
Spread that on nicely.
And then drizzle that with your hot honey.
You can finish off with a little bit of greens or whatever you have at home.
Let's give this a try.
Look at that.
It's just so pretty to look at as well.
It's so nice.
I mean, you're used to an almost squeaky texture when it comes to queson pute.
There's a little bit of grain left.
You could sip it if you want it to be super smooth.
But honestly, I like this because it feels like cheese and it tastes like cheese.
And that hot honey really brings everything together.
Let's see what our taste testers think of this.
So it's chili, honey, and apple cider vinegar just cooked down until it's slightly less thick.
And that with the queson pute should be really tasty.
So again, the idea here is trying to elevate kind of like whole wheat bread.
It smells spicy.
I like this.
It has more contrast.
I see myself eating this at midnight and everyone's already asleep.
Taste it without the chili sauce, the honey.
It's really nice.
The queson pute on its own is really good also.
It's not super salty.
Chop up some pimentos and roast your tomatoes.
Tomatoes, you want them nice and blistered.
About 230 centigrade should be more than enough.
And this, we're going to mix into a spread.
You can actually use queso de bola for this, but I have some parmesan on hand.
So I'm just going to go ahead and use that.
We're going to mix that with some butter, some mayonnaise, some cream cheese.
Blend that all together.
You want this nice and smooth, but also thick enough to spread.
So it should be a bit thicker than like a regular mayonnaise, for example.
Some salt, some black pepper, a bit of sugar to sweeten.
Once you've got the flavor that you want, we can go ahead and toss in some pimientos.
Tomatoes go in.
So you can leave this in the fridge overnight to get it nice and thick.
But if you're impatient like me, you can go ahead and use it right away.
I'm not going to toast the bread here because I want to keep it nice and soft.
This is one of those things, if you grew up in the Philippines, it's probably one of your favorite things to eat.
I'm sure they're going to love this one.
Mmm!
Is it good?
It's good.
Mmm!
It's good!
It's like pizza.
Yeah, it's like pizza.
Yeah, the addition of the tomato is good.
The tomato adds a nice dimension, I guess.
It's good!
Can you tell that this is wheat bread?
Actually, not so much.
I like the bread.
It's nice.
There's one more, Pa.
This is my new favorite.
For this, it's pretty simple.
We need some shrimp, which we're going to mix with some egg white, a little bit of sesame oil,
some soy sauce, some ginger, and some garlic, and some chopped in spring onions.
All that develops into a paste, which we'll then spread on top of our fluffy and delicious wheat bread.
You'll need clean and deveined shrimp.
Mince all that.
You can do this in a blender and a food processor, but I'm going to show you how to make it in a mortar and pestle.
The idea here is for it to not be too soft.
You still want it nice and chunky and bouncy.
The egg white is really going to help us just bind all this together.
You'll be able to visibly notice when the shrimp is seizing and curling.
That means you can go ahead and flip it to the other side.
We're just going to toast it a little bit on this side as well, just to get it nice and crispy.
Make sure you're using raw sesame seeds because we'll be toasting them, obviously, when they're in the pan.
This smells so good, I'm not going to lie.
One of my favorite things to eat when I'm in Singapore.
It's bouncy, it's crunchy.
It's not too oily.
This tastes like a meal.
It looks underwhelming, but when you taste it...
This tastes like a meal because Filipinos like ulam, right?
And this tastes like ulam.
Just add another bread, it's like carbs and ulam together.
The savoriness, and it's filling, so it works.
I would eat it for lunch, for sure. It's easy to eat.
Okay, David, which was your favorite out of all the toasts?
I think the kesong putih with the honey.
The toast was crunchy, the cheese was whipped, so it was creamy.
So it was really a mix of flavors.
The third one, because it tasted like pizza.
I also liked the tomatoes.
The second one, I never ate kesong putih that way, and it tasted so good.
Definitely the second one.
When I eat, there can't be no dessert.
So you need a palate cleanser that's sweet.
And with the second one, the kesong putih, it's not so salty.
But with the sweetness of the honey, I think it's the perfect meal.
So if ever I eat it alone, I won't have to look for a dessert.
Does it change your mind in terms of the potential of toasts?
I never doubted the potential of toasts.
But why did you not like it?
I didn't see the process, how it was made, how easy it is.
So I feel like that would be the deal breaker for me.
If I would eat it regularly.
If I could make it easily.
Because the spread they gave us was intricate.
Maybe it's easy, maybe it's not.
But taste-wise, yeah, definitely changed my mind.
