Pianist Yunchan Lim Interview Sep 30 2021
Hello KOPIS subscribers, I'm Yunchan Lim, the pianist
[Piano] Horowitz
No one can imitate his piano sound.
[Yunchan Lim]
[Yunchan Lim] A strange person.
If I had a child like me, I wouldn't like it.
While playing the piano, I became so sensitive that I couldn't handle it.
[Time Traveler] I want to go to Paris where Liszt and Chopin were together.
I want to participate in Liszt's performance as an audience in the era when there was no line between performers and audiences.
[Favorite Composer] It changes every day, Schubert for today.
He pioneered his own art
without the patronage of aristocrats.
He's been lonely all his life but I respect him.
I want to live like that....ah I don't want to be lonely,
but I want to pave my own way like him.
[Repertoire I want to play] All the Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier All Beethoven's Sonatas
All Mozart's Sonatas All Shostakovich's preludes and fugues
If you are a pianist, you should play those pieces.
[Role Model] The basic model is Mr. Minsoo Sohn and others change every day.
[Role model of the day] Not yet today.
[Role model of yesterday] I practiced Liszt yesterday so Liszt
[Recital vs Concerto] A Concerto for today.
[So yesterday?] Yesterday was a recital.
[ Why?] I heard Rachmaninoff No. 3 when I came here, so I suddenly wanted to do it.
[The first song I want to play at the age of 20] All Mozart's sonatas. My roots are Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier,
Beethoven's sonatas and Mozart's sonatas.
So I'm just thinking of taking the first step with Mozart's sonatas. [at 30?] At that time, Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and keyboard concertos.
[At 40?] Mr. Minsoo Sohn played Beethoven's sonatas in his 40s,
I'll take down such roots
and play all Beethoven's in my 40s.
[Minsoo Sohn] My teacher is religion to me, so I believe everything in him.
He also supports me sincerely.
[Liszt Transcendental] I wouldn't have made this choice if I was a little younger or
a little bit older.
It's my first recital at the Lotte Concert Hall
so I don't want to play Liszt sonatas or Schumann fantasie like everyone else.
As soon as I saw the title Transcendental Etudes on YouTube,
I thought there is nothing more intense than this.
But when I actually practiced it, I regretted it because it was the most difficult piece I've ever done.
My teacher said 'It is impossible, but you have to make a miracle.'
I need to make a miracle, but I have a week left and I don't know what will happen.
