Hey y'all, it's Chris and Tammy.
Today we are making an easy chocolate pound cake.
Easy cake, easy topping, and boy, is it good.
Right, we have lots of chocolate chips left over
that I didn't use for the holidays,
so we are making a chocolate chip pound cake today.
I went to Color Valley Baptist Church
to one of their big meal days,
and one of the ladies there made a chocolate chip pound cake
and this is the one she made, I'm pretty sure,
and boy, was it good.
Now you use a cake mix, but it's so delicious,
so I just had to make it for you guys.
And it's an easy cake to make, so it's quick.
All right, so we're gonna use a white cake mix,
not because that's what it called for,
but because that's what I have.
So you can use yellow, white, German chocolate,
however you wanna do it.
People use all three.
I use a yellow cake mix, a German chocolate cake mix,
and a white cake mix to make this cake.
So you pick one.
Then you use a regular, small Jell-O Instant Pudding
and you use chocolate.
No matter which cake mix you pick,
use the chocolate pudding mix.
You put in a cup of sour cream.
This is so easy.
And it's gonna be delicious.
It's a good price, too, isn't it?
It's not an expensive cake to make at all, is it?
No, especially if you already got
some chocolate chips like I do.
All right, so you're gonna use a half cup of oil.
Some people use a little more oil,
but nowadays our cake mixes are not very big,
so I think a half cup is plenty.
You use four eggs.
And last but not least, you can use water,
but I'm gonna use buttermilk.
Half cup.
And that's all there is to it.
Chocolate's always good with buttermilk.
Now we're gonna mix it up.
I just love this little hand mixer.
It has the best speeds on it.
It actually has a low speed.
Most of them don't these days,
especially the stand mixers.
You put them on low and they sling everything everywhere.
All right, now we're gonna turn it up to medium.
And you're supposed to beat your cake mix
a couple of minutes on medium.
Now, for some reason, if you wanna make it vanilla,
you can, just use the vanilla pudding mix.
And that way, the chocolate chips,
you not got a chocolate base cake,
you got a vanilla cake with chocolate chips in it.
Either way, one pack of pudding,
one pack of cake mix, whatever you choose.
And the rest of the ingredients will stay the same.
And we're just gonna fold in the chips.
I'm gonna put in about one and a half cups,
I think, will be enough.
If you got a 12 ounce package,
you can just use it if that's what you wanna do.
Cause that is one and a half cups.
Yeah, those do smell good, don't they?
Those chocolate chips?
Yeah. Yeah, they do.
What are those, the Toll House?
Yeah, Nestle Toll House.
Look, I bought this huge bag at Santa's Club.
And so me and Chris need to make some chocolate chip stuff.
Every time we have something,
we need to make something chocolate chip.
All right, so I'm gonna spray up this book pan right here.
This is a anniversary edition, that's what it is.
And so I like to spray them
because when you get these fancy pans,
it's really hard to grease them with shortening or butter.
So I always just spray them.
That way you're getting all the little cracks.
And this is a really big pan,
so it won't raise all the way to the top with one cake mix.
Now you're gonna cook this in the oven.
At 350 degrees until it's done.
And your mix really should be thick like that
because that's how a pound cake mix is.
Yeah, I thought it was gonna be runny.
Well, it would be if I had added more oil and liquid to it.
Some people do add more,
but I don't think it needs any more than this.
I think a half cup is plenty to do the trick.
So just spread it around in your pan,
get it in the oven, and bake it.
Boy, don't that look good already.
Mm, that's gonna be a good cake.
All right, this cake is ready.
I've already checked it with my handy dandy cake tester.
So it took it about 40, 45 minutes to get done.
It's nice and tall.
All right, we're gonna make us a topping
to go on top of this,
and it says it will harden after it cools down some.
So we are going to start it.
You're gonna start with a couple of tablespoons of butter
and get it melted.
You're also, I'm using a nonstick pan.
Make it easier.
A half cup of milk, and this is evaporated milk.
A little bit of vanilla.
You can add this at the end or now.
It doesn't make any difference.
It's not gonna get hot enough for it to matter.
12 ounces of chocolate chips.
Let them start getting warm.
Just a little spatula.
Yum, it already looks delicious, don't it?
Chocolate and butter, hmm.
I'm gonna turn down this heat a little.
And then as soon as this melts good,
we're gonna add some powdered sugar.
How much powdered sugar did it say, Chris?
A quarter cup.
Okay.
I'm gonna go ahead and turn my heat off
because it's gonna be melted here in a minute.
Don't stop stirring.
Make sure you get all that milk stirred in there good.
Go all the way around with it.
I can still see little bitty pieces in it,
and you want it to be real smooth.
So just take your spatula and mash it good
as you're stirring.
All right, y'all.
We're gonna let this thing cool down some
so that we can get our topping on here.
It doesn't have to be cold,
but it doesn't need to be hot enough to melt it either.
So we're just gonna wait a few minutes,
and then we're gonna get that delicious topping.
All right, so we've got this sauce good and creamy looking.
Isn't that pretty?
And now we're gonna add about a quarter cup of powdered sugar
and get it mixed in there and get it on the cake.
You wanna make sure and spread it
while it's still good and warm.
To get that sugar to melt, I'm gonna heat it up again.
So I want it to be pretty, y'all.
I don't want it to be gritty looking.
All right, now we're gonna drizzle it.
And if you wanna decorate it,
you can put a little few chocolate chips on the top.
I'm gonna flip my cake upside down.
See the little chocolate chips in it?
Looks good.
Just let it cool just a minute.
It doesn't have to be completely cool
before you put your topping on it,
but it don't need to be so hot
it's gonna melt the topping either.
Okay, so let this cool just a minute,
and then we'll get our topping on here.
Okay.
Now that is a yummy chocolate pound cake.
Mm-mm-mm.
Mm.
You know what it tastes like?
Molten lava cake.
What?
It really does.
You need vanilla ice cream with this, for sure.
It is heavenly.
Oh my gosh, it's so delicious.
If you love chocolate chips and you love chocolate,
you have got to get in the kitchen and make this.
It is so good.
My kids would go crazy over it.
Woo, that's good.
Really, really, really, really good.
Thank y'all for watching Collard Valley Cooks,
where I learned about this at Collard Valley Baptist Church,
cooking like Mama did.
Bye, y'all.
Love y'all.
