I took my girlfriend down the Pickerel River for a couple nights in the backcountry. The route proved to be the perfect trip for introducing someone to Ontario camping or for a leisurely weekend paddle. Part of the French River Provincial Park
The route did not include a SINGLE portage but still provided privacy and a 3 km narrow and back bay all to ourselves!

What's going on guys, it's Noah from Northern Scavenger here.
It's a May long weekend and I'm here with my girlfriend Leah. We're doing a two-night trip,
kind of just cruising through the French River Provincial Park. We don't really have that much
of a route. I have a map here and a couple campsites so we're just gonna kind of feel
it out as we go along. It's a gorgeous day so far. The last couple days were about 28-29 degrees,
a little colder today. So we've been paddling for about four hours today. We made it about 12,
maybe even 14 kilometers. We've had the wind on our back a lot of the time so we've been flying.
We made it to the Pickerel River and then we went south. We're looking for campsite
910. I think we found it in this back corner over here. You can probably hear that wind,
it's pretty fierce. This is really nice.
We have this entire area to ourselves, so nice. We're having some extra creamy
crab dinner tonight. We got a fire going to roast our weenies. Chop up the weenies,
throw them in the mac and cheese. That's an awesome sunset. I don't know if it does justice
with the GoPro but the entire skyline over there is pink. Pretty cool. Hey shy girl,
say hi to the folks on YouTube. Last night was pretty cold. I'm going to drop down to about
maybe three or four degrees possibly. We didn't really have the warmest sleeping bags.
So now I think what we're going to do is we're going to have a slow morning. Maybe have some
pancakes and blueberries, hang around this site for a bit and then later today head
back to the main channel and find a campsite in the bay there. No bugs though. We're doing
things a little differently here today. Instead of oatmeal we have ashy blueberry pancakes.
Let's take a look.
Not your typical round pancakes here. We're trying to make it look like a butthole.
Why don't you wait till we flip them so they don't look so disgusting? They look great.
That's not too bad. What's your secret? Butter. Butter and ash. Yep.
Wrapped himself right around. Little snot rocket. So we're back on the main channel of Pickerel
River. We just decided to stop at a point for a late lunch. We're having a nice little hors d'oeuvre,
croissant, cheese. How do you pronounce that? I don't know. We're having turkey kielbasa,
some cheese and crackers and a summer's bee that is still actually cold. That's a good shot. You
look normal and everything. Thanks. It's really creepy that you're just holding it there.
Lifestyle shots. So now that we're back on the French River you can see lots of signs of people
hanging out in the Meitu for a long weekend. A lot of fishing boats out. You can hear a chainsaw
in the background. We even saw a conservation officer today so you know we're in a very popular
spot when you see all these people. So we've arrived at our second campsite for the trip.
It's a bay that's kind of close to the put-in access point. Supposed to get a lot of rain
tomorrow so we're just deciding to get closer tonight and then do a short paddle tomorrow.
The bugs are bad. We got a fire going and Leah's making some quesadillas. Can you shake it? All
right it's too much. So we camped at a site right next to the put-in. Easy access to a lot of people.
One of my biggest pet peeves is people leaving their frigging cutlery, stoves and every other
piece of equipment they think is going to help other campers but really it's a huge nuisance to
see all this garbage on the campsite. See this? No, I do not need a dirty pot. I also don't need
five knives. Used knives. There's like chicken stuff on there. Honestly, if you're going to
camp on a site like this I know people watching this they're probably very courteous. It's the
people that don't really know a lot about camping that think it's okay to leave their garbage on the
site. All right so we're on our way home after our trip up to the French River. We didn't do much
filming this morning because of how rainy it was. Only about two kilometers from our put-in at
so we got up pretty early and just packed up and headed out. Overall it was a great trip.
We got some fishing in, booked a few campsites and the weather was pretty good for most of it.
Another successful trip for the books.
