Hey everybody it's Mikey Chen.
Today I'm going to be talking about something that I don't typically talk about because
1.
It doesn't involve meat and 2.
It doesn't involve any hot oil.
Today I will be talking about fruits and you gotta understand something about me.
I typically don't really like fruits.
There's only a handful of fruits that I actually like but there are a lot of fruits that I
consider my enemy.
For example and I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but I hate cannot stand
apples.
I can't.
I know you're like what?
You don't like apples?
How do you not like apples?
I hate apples.
Every time I look at an apple my entire mouth just cringes.
I mean I can take an apple when it's inside a pie but just biting into an apple just thinking
about it right now just kind of ugh just kills me.
I don't know what it is.
I hate apples.
I mean I like apple juice.
I'm okay with apple sauce and again I love apple pie.
I just cannot stand the actual raw fruits.
So my number one enemy on the vegetable side is broccoli and my number one enemy on the
fruit side are apples.
But today I'm going to show you guys some fruits that I absolutely love and adore.
And these are all Asian fruits meaning that these fruits are predominantly produced in
Asia.
I'm not saying that they're good at math or good at science where they grow up and they
have to become fruit lawyers or fruit doctors.
They don't cringe when they say I love you to their Asian fruit parents.
And I just realized that my chair squeaks a lot so yeah sorry about that.
And make sure you guys watch to the end because at the very end I'm going to show you guys
a fruit that I bet you a lot of you have never seen before but it's going to change your
life forever.
So I arranged the fruits from my least favorite which I still love but I just love the least
to my most favorite.
It's kind of like when you have a bunch of kids.
I mean you love them all but one of them you might not like as much as the other.
So out of all the fruits that I love this is probably the one that I like the least
of the ones I love if that makes any sense.
So this is an Asian pear or Chinese pear.
You see that it comes in a nice sweater vest sort of thing.
If this was clothing I mean this would just not work.
And these will probably be one of the few fruits that you actually have to kind of undress.
So here we go.
Wow it's got like two layers of clothing.
Take a look.
This is a typical Chinese pear.
It's yellow.
It's grainy.
If you feel it you can actually feel all the grains on the surface of this pear.
And now I'm going to show you its bigger brother.
This is a package of Korean pears.
These are also called Asian pears.
It's kind of crazy because this is sold in a package of three and this is really expensive.
But it's really cool.
It comes in a little egg carton looking thing and it's all packaged really nicely.
And again if you feel the surface of these pears they feel very grainy.
Sometimes these pears are also called apple pears because they kind of look like an apple
which is probably why these are the least favorites of the fruits that I actually like.
And the reason why these pears have protective casing around it is because they bruise very
very easily.
These pears are very crisp.
They have a lot a lot of juice in them.
Okay here are the two pears.
As soon as you cut them open, actually even before you cut them open, smell them.
They smell so fragrant.
They smell like a flower.
And once you cut them open they look kind of similar on the inside.
They both have white interiors.
And the interiors are very grainy as well.
I feel like these pears, the smaller ones, are more fragrant than the bigger ones.
Oh it just smells so good.
Mmm.
I love these pears.
Like I said they're grainy.
Once you take a bite there's an explosion of juice in your mouth and it's completely
sweet.
It's not tangy at all.
It's just pure sweet nectar.
Mmm.
There's something almost intoxicating about the taste of these pears.
The fragrance of the pear explodes in your mouth as well and that makes a huge difference.
So here we go.
Let's try the Korean pear.
Mmm.
I feel like this pear is juicier than the smaller one but this one is way more fragrant.
So actually I like this much better than I like the Korean pear.
Alright guys moving on to a fruit that I like more than the pears is this right here.
And for those of you who don't know these are lychee.
It'll usually come in a bundle like this.
Let me take one out for you.
Here you go.
Here's what a lychee looks like.
The outer shell is kind of rough and thorny.
Kind of like a really weak piece of armor.
This is a tropical fruit.
It's typically found in southern China like Guangdong or Fujian.
Let me tell you about the first time I ever had this fruit.
I was living in Knoxville, Tennessee and one day we went shopping at the local Kroger and
I remember my dad's face when he saw these fruits being sold.
I never seen my dad so happy in my life because he's a typical very strict Asian parent.
He never smiled.
He's always really serious.
Then he saw these and he looked like a little kid on Christmas morning.
Of course I didn't know what these were so after he bought basically everything that
was in the store he took it back home and had me try one of these.
That's when I realized these are some of the best things I'll ever have in my life.
Here let me peel one for you.
So when you get rid of the outer shell slash armor of these lychee.
And look how pretty they are.
They're really rosy.
They're kind of reddish pink.
These are very pretty so let's go ahead and open one.
You gotta be careful opening these because the fruit is really really really delicate.
As soon as you peel it you'll get this fragrance that's just how can I describe it.
It's just heavenly.
There's some unique smell to this fruit that just like heightens all your desire to want
to eat it.
On the outside it's smooth, it's beautiful.
On the inside there's a huge pit.
So don't just put the whole thing in your mouth and bite down because the pit is really
hard.
Here we go.
Oh my god.
When you bite into it it's literally like a explosion of flavor, of juice, of everything
that's good in this world.
It is all in your mouth.
It is so wonderful.
I'll tell you guys a story.
Back during the Tang Dynasty you guys remember we did a video on Off The Great Wall channel
about the four most beautiful women in Chinese history.
And one of the beautiful women her name was Yang Guifei and she was the empress to one
of the Tang emperors.
And legend has it she would want to eat these things almost every single day because she
loved them.
This was her favorite fruit and also she believed that this really helped her complexion.
It helped keep her skin really smooth, really white, really soft.
But the issue is that she was living in Chang'an or Xi'an right now which is towards the north
And these fruits, like I said, these were found in the south of China.
So of course the emperor wanted to make her happy.
What he would do was basically have his servants ride super fast horses.
And these guys would ride these horses down to southern China.
There's actually even a poem describing this whole journey called Li Zhi Tan.
The direct translation is Li Qi Sai.
It's basically a poem describing the crazy journey it takes to get these things to this
empress every single day.
The poem described the whole journey as like a relay race.
Like one guy would ride a horse until he can hand the Li Qi off to a second guy and so
on so forth until it gets back to the empress.
It even said that horses and men have died trying to get this fruit to the empress.
So anyway, I guess if you really want nice skin or just want a fruit that's absolutely
out of this world amazing, hunt these things down.
And I'll tell you, these do come in cans.
It's not the same.
The biggest difference is that you will not be able to get the awesome intoxicating fragrance
of the Li Qi in a can.
Now on to my most favorite fruit in the world.
Here it is guys.
Mangosteen.
Oh my god, this is so awesome.
Just this little pouch of mangosteen, I have like six in here.
This is like 20 bucks.
These things are expensive.
They're also called the queen of all fruits.
You know what the king of all fruits is?
And I disagree with this.
The king of all fruits is of course the nasty sock smelling dorian that tastes like, you
know, onions and feet.
This is really deserving of the title of queen of all fruits because this literally is the
best fruit you will ever have in your life.
Like hands down, no comparison.
All fruits need to bow down to the queen.
Oh, your majesty, I'm not worthy.
I'm not worthy.
Here's what they look like.
They kind of look like little round miniature eggplants with a little leaf and it's purple
and round and it has a little clover pattern thing on the bottom.
All right, here's how you open them.
You take off this whole stem leaf part, throw that away.
And then typically what you can do is you can cut a little bit into this, but don't
cut too much because what's on the inside is super awesome, delicate fruits.
And you don't want to disturb that with a knife.
What I like to do is I like to squeeze it from the top and bottom.
And typically what this will do is it'll start to break apart this fruit.
You see here.
See how that just like breaks apart.
Look at the inside.
So what you want to do is take out this white fleshy part and if you touch it, it's really
slimy so I don't really like to touch it.
So take a look.
It does kind of resemble a garlic.
It has all the cloves of different sizes.
But what's on the inside is this tart, sweet, delicious fruit and it has a pit inside these
as well.
Oh my god.
This fruit is so amazing.
It's a little fibrous.
It's sweet.
It's tingy.
It's juicy.
Again, it's shaped like a garlic so that kind of makes it kind of cool.
It's kind of like a peach, a clementine, and a lychee all in one.
The first time I had this, I put it in my mouth and I couldn't believe what I was eating
because it's almost also kind of like you're eating yogurt.
I'm sorry.
I need a moment with Her Majesty right here.
There's actually a story about Queen Victoria wanted to taste this fruit so much that she
was offering anybody a knighthood if they could bring her this fruit and ultimately
no one brought her this fruit.
And also I've heard rumors that these things are not legally supposed to be imported into
the US so I don't know if that's still true or not.
But if it is, I bought these from Kroger.
Alright, there you go guys.
Those are some of my favorite Asian fruits in the world.
Not just Asian fruits but fruits in general.
I love these things the most.
So if you've never tried this, you've got to go out and find this somehow.
Do whatever you need to do.
Fly to Southeast Asia, fly to Southern China, whatever it is, make sure you try these fruits
out.
Alright guys.
Thank you so much for watching.
See ya later.
