Get More Energy From a Cup of Coffee

You know those days where you need coffee
if you want any hope of functioning properly?
Today is one of those days.
Most people have coffee first thing in the morning
to serve as a kickstarter to their day,
but I find that I'm more energized
if I delay my cup of coffee for a few hours
and focus more on filling my morning
with a well-balanced breakfast.
Rather than relying on coffee to spark my day,
I try to start with food that's going to fuel my body
throughout the day, rather than for an hour or two
right at the beginning.
Things like proteins, carbs, and natural sugars
are gonna supply my body with the long-term energy
that it needs to function properly
throughout the entirety of the day.
The reason I delay coffee consumption
is because as your body is waking up,
your brain is producing a chemical known as cortisol,
which is a steroid that increases energy
and keeps you alert.
Typically, your brain's cortisol production
is at its highest during the first hour you wake up,
and it peaks a second time between noon and 1 p.m.
So rather than drinking my coffee
first thing in the morning,
it's better to wait until cortisol production is down,
and my brain is most susceptible to fatigue.
This means your best time to drink coffee
is around 10 a.m. or 3 p.m.
When 10 a.m. rolls around
and your body is ready for an energy boost,
it is time for coffee.
One way to maximize energy from coffee
is by pairing it with a grapefruit.
While the science isn't settled on this,
there is evidence that suggests
that eating a grapefruit temporarily slows down
your body's removal of toxins from your blood,
which means the caffeine stays in your system for longer,
giving you an energy boost for a greater amount of time.
Another great way to get more energy from drinking coffee
is by drinking it right before you have a nap.
Now, that seems odd,
but if you drink a cup of coffee quickly,
it's going to take 20 to 30 minutes
for the caffeine to take effect.
This way, you're waking up at just the same time
as when the coffee is kicking in,
giving you more energy
than if you were to just have a coffee or just have a nap.
Feeling energized?
Feeling rested?
