We've all heard of a hamstring strain or tweaked knee ligaments,
but there are more bizarre reasons for missing a game.
Here are the weirdest football injuries of all time.
Carlos Tevez – Prison Rules
Carlos Tevez has always been popular in Argentina. He comes from a poor family and grew up in a rough
neighborhood in Buenos Aires. The Argentine public finds it easy to relate to him. Sometimes,
though, Tevez's man-of-the-people image backfires. During his third spell at Boca Juniors in 2018,
he visited his half-brother in prison, a maximum security unit in Córdoba. The inmates invited
Tevez to join in their kickabout, and the football mad striker couldn't resist. It didn't go well.
Tevez tore a calf muscle and was out for several weeks. Oh, and in case you were wondering,
his half-brother's serving a 16-year sentence for armed robbery. Nice.
Sam Henderson – Runaway Cow
Sam Henderson has missed training this week after being struck, explained Dougie Anderson,
the assistant manager of Scottish side Queen of the South. Struck by what exactly? An opposition
player? A collapsing goal frame? A flying corner flag? Not quite. Henderson was actually hit by
a runaway cow. The keeper was at his father's farm when the bothersome bovine charged at him
and injured his shoulder. It could have been worse as the cow ran at him for a second time,
but he managed to get out of the way, Anderson added. It's quite amusing when you think about it.
No, it's not. Marco Asensio – Shaved Legs
It's pretty obvious why footballers often pick up injuries related to their legs,
but Marco Asensio couldn't blame his unusual ailment in 2017 on a mistimed tackle or an
overstretched muscle. The Real Madrid star was forced to pull out of a Champions League game
due to an infected pimple after shaving his legs.
He has a pimple on his leg which means he cannot lift his sock, Zinedine Zidane said in a press
conference trying to hold back the laughter. Roy Keane was working as a TV pundit that night.
No prizes for guessing how he reacted. Stephen Gerrard – Torn Privates
Now, we really wish we were making this one up, but sadly not. Stephen Gerrard actually tore his
penis as a result of a challenge by Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter. The Liverpool captain had
blood gushing out of his private parts. The club doctor, Andrew Massey, had the unusual task of
stitching things back together. I looked down and I saw blood everywhere and thought,
wow, that must be really sore, Massey said. No kidding. I was trying to think back to my
medical training and nowhere does it teach you how to stitch a penis. Massey did a good job though.
Remarkably, Gerrard was able to complete the full 90 minutes.
Rio Ferdinand – PlayStation Problems Now, it's important for footballers to wind
down after training sessions. Some take up golf while others prefer to play video games at home.
Rio Ferdinand belonged to the second group. There's no harm in sitting at home and pressing
your thumbs on a controller, you might think. Think again. Ferdinand had his feet up on the
table while playing pro evo soccer in 2002. The problem was, he stayed in that position for hours.
When he got up, he realised he'd strained a tendon in the back of his knee. Ferdinand had
to miss Leeds United's next game against Aston Villa, but he was back in training soon after.
Maybe it wouldn't have happened if he'd been playing FIFA?
David Batty – The Trike Incident David Batty was a tough tackling
midfielder who wasn't scared of anyone. The Leeds and England man relished 50-50 challenges,
and always backed himself to come out on top. There was one opponent who got the better of him,
though. His three-year-old daughter. The year was 1999, and Batty was recovering from an ankle
injury. While doing some light exercise in the garden, he was crashed into by his daughter on
her tricycle. Batty damaged his Achilles tendon, and his comeback was delayed by a few weeks.
His daughter didn't even get a yellow card. Darius Vesel – Self-Help
Now, there are many reasons to be jealous of footballers. Not only do they get to spend
every day playing the sport we all love, they get paid huge amounts to do it.
Footballers also benefit from having access to top medical professionals whenever they need them,
from physios to surgeons and doctors to dentists. They have an array of experts at their disposal.
Now, if only Darius Vesel had made use of Aston Villa's medical staff in 2002.
Rather than consult someone at the club about a blood blister under his toenail,
Vesel decided to pull out his toolbox and drill through the nail to drain the blister.
Surprise, surprise, he gave himself a blood infection and ended up with one toenail missing.
Worst of all, Vesel had to tell his teammates what he'd just done.
Jari Lipmanen – Coat Can Jari Lipmanen was a brilliant footballer.
A skillful attacking midfielder, he spent his best years at Ajax, but also played for Liverpool,
Barcelona and...Fulham. Lipmanen might have achieved even more in the game if it wasn't
for injuries. His time at Anfield was disrupted by various problems, particularly with his ankle.
But if you want definitive proof that the finish forward was injury-prone,
look no further than his spell at Malmo. Lipmanen was just quietly minding his own business when he
was struck in the eye by the ring pull of a coat can opened by the club's sporting director.
Some people are just plain unlucky.
Darren Barnard – Doggy Knee Anyone who's ever owned a puppy knows
they're pretty hard work. Full of energy and always needing attention of some sort,
it's not easy to raise a dog who's just a few months old. Darren Barnard knows that better
than most. The Barnsley midfielder was ruled out for five months after an accident involving his
puppy in 1999. The young dog wasn't fully house-trained, and Barnard paid the price when
he tore his knee ligaments after slipping in a puddle of the puppy's wee on the kitchen floor.
Who's not a good boy then? Michael Stensgaard – Ironing Board
Poor old Michael Stensgaard. He was just trying to do his bit and help out with the housework
when everything backfired. There were rumours that the Liverpool keeper was sidelined by an
ironing board falling on him. That's not quite true. Stensgaard was already nursing a shoulder
injury when he picked up the ironing board at home. Next thing he knew, he'd dislocated his
shoulder. My shoulder just popped out when I lifted it so it was obviously too weak, he said.
The Dane's shoulder troubled him for years and he never made a league appearance for Liverpool.
What other weird injuries would you add to the list?
