A portable 120v ceramic heater is really handy when you are working in a cold environment, like when you are doing car or equipment maintenance in a garage or shop. This little heater can be placed right next to where you are working and make the work a lot more comfortable!
Our friends at Newair have provided us with a tool that we make a lot of use of when winter sets in. While we have a wood stove in our main shop, and our garage is insulated, there are times when having a small heater, with a fan assist, comes in REALLY handy!
We unboxed and put to work Newair’s NGH160GA00 Portable Ceramic 120v Electric Garage Heater. It’s compact, with dimensions of about 8-½” ( x cm), x 8-½” ( x cm) x 10-¼” ( x cm), and weighing right at 6 lbs (2.72 kg).
The small size and light weight make it really handy to transport and set up, without taking up much space or being heavy to carry.
The company says that this 1500-watt unit can heat up to 160 square feet ( x square meters). Our experience is that this sounds about right, but to be honest, we aren’t generally trying to heat up a full space, just us, what we are working on, and a small space right around us!
We like that you can swivel the unit to aim it where you like, and the carrying handle is on the top, with the controls situated just ahead of the handle. Everything seems to be where it should be. We also like that the unit heats up right away. This is especially important when you just want to get to the job and don’t want to want for your heater to come up to temperature!
Here’s something we think you’ll like as well. Even though the ceramic heating plate and the fan go to work right away producing plentiful heat, the outside of the heater stays comfortable to the touch. Nice!

Hey, Dirt Farmer Jay here from DirtFarmerJay.com.
My friends at NewAir sent me one of these
compact ceramic heaters to test
and to let you know whether it's a good deal or not.
Stay tuned and I'll tell you all about it.
Hey, Dirt Farmer Jay here from DirtFarmerJay.com.
My friends at NewAir sent me their NGH160GA00
120 volt electric garage heater.
Now this little heater runs about $129.
It's very compact as you can see when we open the box here.
But size is a good thing when you try to heat a space.
Now we heat our shop with a wood stove,
but the farther side of the shop
or if I wanna heat an area that I'm working in
really quickly, having something like this is really handy.
So what we're gonna do is we're gonna put this to work
through the day and then let you know
what our impressions were of it, our initial impressions.
And then we promise you to come back one year from now
and do a further review where it's been put to use
for over a year to let you know
what our long-term impressions are.
But let's go ahead and get this little heater
out of the box.
Pull it out and get the packing away from it.
Comes a poly bag with the cord out here.
Let's go ahead and just tear this off.
Pretty straightforward.
Here is its instruction manual
that comes along with it in multiple languages,
as well as the power cord itself is bagged.
Okay, a couple of little things right here.
Has a nice little stand.
The handle, carrying the handle,
this is pretty doggone light.
I would say maybe it's a couple pounds, maybe.
But very, very light.
You could carry it like this.
The power controls are right here, off.
Fan speed, half speed, full speed.
And then the thermostat right here,
minimum heat all the way up to max heat.
So let's go ahead and plug it in and see what we get.
We'd be remiss if we didn't look at the documentation
that came along with it.
So here's the little instruction manual.
There's also a registration card
that tells you to register this for warranty.
And then also just making sure you stop
and read some of the safeties
and the warranty card and so forth.
The specifications are right inside this as well.
How many volts it draws, how many amps it uses.
It says it heats about 160 square feet,
which is about 15 square meters.
The overall dimensions is about eight and a half inches
by eight and a half inches by 10 and a half inches,
which is about 22 centimeters by 22 centimeters
by 26 centimeters.
So very compact.
And then if you look at something like this
and you go, well, wait a minute,
what am I going to get for this $129?
This looks like a small heater.
Well, let's look at the heat output that it creates.
And I think something this small makes it really handy
to put it where you need it.
And size is actually a great benefit for this tool.
Okay, what the instruction manual is going to tell you
is if you have some troubleshooting,
but also just use of these controls,
but they're pretty doggone intuitive the way they are
without a lot of instruction.
Obviously that's off.
That position is fan only.
This position is running half the wattage on heat,
and this is the full amount.
All right, so we'll put it on half.
And then this is minimum heat, turns off everything,
but then somewhere it's going to hit the set point.
It just did it about here,
or you can turn it all the way up to max.
And let's see, is it starting to produce heat already?
Yes, it is.
So I'm getting some significant warmth out of there.
Another nice feature about this unit
is this stays cool on the outside.
So you're not going to end up with,
if you're got this under or near a car,
you're working on something in a cold garage or something,
and heating up the workspace
make it a little bit more comfortable.
You're not worrying about your hand
coming back and touching this,
or your cheek being against it or something inadvertently
and burning yourself.
This stays cool.
And as you can see,
this is a ceramic block heater right here.
So that block is putting out a very nice, even heat.
That is a very nice, too bad you can't feel that heat,
but that's really nice.
And then the fan speed stays the same.
There is no variable speed on the fan,
but it's just a comfortable wafting heat.
And I can feel the heat out here as well.
All right, we're going to go ahead
and use this throughout the day
while we do other work around the shop
and film some other episodes.
And then we'll let you know our impressions.
We'll be right back.
Okay, we're back.
We've had this running for hours now,
and it's been not too much above freezing outside.
It got warm enough in here.
We forgot about the fire in the fireplace
and let it burn down.
This little dude's been running.
It's very quiet.
As you can see, it doesn't glow and get hot.
I'm putting my hands on it.
Absolutely cool.
There's no warmth on the outside shell.
As a matter of fact, I can put my hand right there,
and the heat that builds up
is really enough accumulator right there,
but the grill itself is not hot.
We're impressed with this unit, and it's quiet.
We were able to use it
while we're actually filming some other episodes
without it being disturbing in the background.
We're pretty impressed with this.
Check this out.

And meanwhile, we'll put it on our calendar
to come back a year from now
after we've used this in the shop environment,
day in and day out while the cold weather lasts,
and then back again next year when the winter hits again,
and then we'll let you know
if we continue to be impressed with it.
You can check that out.
