China has announced that it will be raising retirement ages to 65 (for all workers) by 2030. Currently, the retirement age in China depends on gender and type of work: Women in blue-collar jobs -- such as manual and industrial workers -- retire at 50; women in the civil service retire at 55. Men retire at 60. While the move is economically sound, there are sensitive political and social implications. Some workers will welcome working for longer. However, there is resistance to such major change. Stakeholders in the Chinese economy will need to plan for resulting challenges but also opportunities.
