Amelia and JP VLOG 8: My whole life I've dreamed of seeing whales up-close, and our Whale Watching Puerto Lopez tour on Ecuador's Southern Coast more than delivered! We saw a momma Humpback Whale and her baby playing very close to the port of Puerto Lopez, Ecuador. They swam right by and even under the boat! They're such amazing, prehistoric looking animals!

Today we are going to hop on the bus to Puerto Lopez
to go for our very first ever whale watching tour.
We're both really excited especially JP because this has been a dream of his to
go and see whales up close and personal. So fingers
crossed that we get some good whale sighting today and also that we
have a beautiful non-misty day.
We are waiting here in La Enterada for the bus, the proper bus
that will take us to Puerto Lopez to go whale watching.
So we're told that we have to either have an orange or green because all the
other colors just turn around here right in La Enterada and they go
back to Montanita. That's the wrong direction.
So we're going to stand here and wait for the bus. Hopefully it'll come soon.
We got off the bus on the south side of Puerto Lopez. They were
yelling at people if they're going to go
whale watching or Isla La Plata to get off there
but they were trying to sell tickets so we
are going to walk down to the place since we already have reservations.
We're going to walk down to the place where we check in so
we're walking along there now.
Amelia's having a rough morning so far. She's a little mad at me because she was
dilly-dallying around the room when we were trying to get ready and
while everyone else in Ecuador, the Ecuadorians, are muy tranquilo
I still have a hard time being late to places and it's a common occurrence
here for everyone to be late including Amelia.
So she got mad at me when I asked her to hurry up and get ready.
And then the bus ride here was very jerky and windy.
Windy mountain roads to get here and it kind of made her sick to her stomach.
So she's not feeling too good today. Hopefully she'll bring her smile back
so I can put her on camera soon. But we have about an hour to kill before
we have to leave the office here
for our tour, our whale watching tour. I'm so excited to see humpbacks.
So gorgeous. This is our first day where we finally see sun. It's warm. I've had to
put on extra sunscreen today. One of the things I found really amazing
about being here is whether it's overcast and cloudy or we
had a really misty day like yesterday, the ocean, the beaches, the scenery, it is
incredibly beautiful. I highly recommend coming and
experiencing this amazing coast. We're super excited for whale watching.
We're really happy because look at it. It's fully clear today.
I think we're going to have a great fun-filled day.
So I'm happy to report that the bathrooms are squeaky clean here and
they provide toilet paper for 25 cents unlike Montanita which was
it was okay but no toilet paper and it still cost 25 cents.
It was 10 for me. No, it was 10 cents for Jamie.
So we're walking back to the tour place and I saw a sign for
Pancake Vegano and we talked to the I guess the restaurant owner and he's got
all sorts of vegan options which sound delicious so I think we'll be
having lunch in it later. Yay! I'm really excited because
as vegans, traveling vegans, we always carry some bars and PB&Js
so it's really nice to know that we don't have to rely solely on PB&Js to
get by on our vacations here in Ecuador.
Hola. Hola.
It's like food for the evening.
Amelia is sunscreening it up. Yep, we actually have sun today.
For the first time since we've been on the coast we've seen the sun.
We're walking down with a group of people. We're not sure if we're on the
boat with them because they were with the tour company
next door and I think we were the only two with the tour company we
went to so they may be shoving us on a boat with
this other tour company. We're walking down to use the bathrooms and buy water
before we head out to the boat.
We are on the boat and we are taking off.
There's 18 of us on this tour. I was really skeptical that we were all going
to fit but everybody seems to be really comfortable
and we all got our life vests on. Muy importante.
Vamos. So we haven't even really started the tour yet and we've already seen the
blue-footed boobies. There's a whole bunch of them
and I read that the bluer the feet the younger the males are
so we got a mixture of young and old. It's pretty cool.
That's a mom and a baby. Not to the front of the boat but I'm afraid I might fall
over with my camera on board.
This is so amazing. I was up at the front of the boat and the whales were right
next to us. The tail is, well you can't see this
probably in the camera, but it was huge. It's a mama and a baby and this is just
amazing. It's so magical.
We're back. We had a fantastic trip. It was a three-hour tour. Three-hour tour.
That never gets old. We saw a pod of whales on the way back too.
It was pretty cool to see a whole pod. It was very cool. They came really close to
us and the one that was jumping was bigger
than the little baby we saw. It's really amazing. Glad we did this.
We decided to come sit on the beach and drink a cerveza and I even fell asleep.
We haven't eaten yet. Trying to decide if we want to go eat or not
or just head back to La Entrada. Or just lay here and continue to chillax.
Yeah, Amelia's vote is to lay here and continue to chillax.
It's very relaxing. We decided that we're tired
so we went, walked up to the main road and got on the, there was a bus waiting
for us. So we just got on the bus and we're
going to head back to La Entrada. Amelia is extremely tranquilo.
So we're experiencing a minor delay on the bus. We're not sure what's going on.
It sounds like I'm hoping that they are changing a tire
and it's nothing more serious. We did hear some noises.
Who knows? Oh, sounds like maybe they're, they just closed something up. So
fingers crossed that we're going to be on our way shortly.
Our bus appears to be worse off than we thought.
I think it's the transmission and I'm guessing they're going to have to send
us another bus because they're out there banging on it but
it sounds worse now than it did before they tried to fix it the last
time. And Amelia is really nervous because
we're on top of a mountain. We have to go down the other side still
with the transmission that's not working.
Her feet work but there's no, this is a very, it's a narrow road with no shoulder
jungle on each side. We'll be home eventually.
Yes we will. And now I'm hungry. And we're back.
We had a fantastic day whale watching. Oh my gosh it was so amazing. We didn't even
have to go that far out of the bay. We got to see a little baby doing lots
of jumps. Little for whale standards though. Little.
And her mother and then we went to do the
trip to the bay. A few people did the fastest snorkeling trip I've ever seen. I
know that water is cold because it is winter here.
And then on the way back we got to see another pod of whales. It was freaking
amazing. We went late on the beach which was
super tranquilo for about an hour and just chillax.
And then hopped on a bus back to La Entrada.
We had a minor delay, well two minor delays because
they had to stop twice to fix the bus. So that was a little nerve-wracking but
bottom line is we made it and we're awesome. We're really happy.
We didn't get rained on so that's a big plus. We didn't see the sun.
We did see the sun this morning so it actually felt like summer a little bit
in the middle of winter. Yeah it was really really fantastic.
And it's only what 4 30 so we still have
the whole rest of the day ahead of us to chillax and do
whatever we feel like doing which I think is going to include a shower for
me because my hair is feeling very salty. Please remember to like,

And also it's so important to help us spread the word about veganism.
