Malaysia has many undiscovered places to camp and in the previous video we showed you Gopeng and
Taman Negara. In this episode we continue our search for more and end up in Awana Kijau and
Sungai Lembeng. When you click subscribe, remember to hit the notification bell so you never miss a
video. The roads in Malaysia are relatively good to drive as we always have an option to use either
the toll roads or a more scenic route which is a little longer but you do get to see more of rural
Malaysia. The Kijau beach stretches for eight kilometers with rocky outcrops in the north at
Awana Kijau and south at Bukit Penunjuk. The famous sleeping giant rock formation in the sea is
located at Penunjuk beach. This is our favorite spot in Kijau. It's kept really clean and on weekdays
the place is all for us. Friendly locals come and go and some even stop to ask for photos especially
when we come with the Kombi. Teamwork and integrity are important qualities to have especially when
traveling as a group. Setting up and tearing down camp really takes a lot of time and effort
especially when moving from one location to another quite often. We all have specific tasks to
fulfill and after a long day's drive we look forward to setting up relatively fast in order
to enjoy the rest of the day preparing for dark. Unlike living in the house when we are camped out
we need to ensure that everything is properly set up before dark or else we have a harder time
working in the dark. Camper van travel is so addictive for us especially when it's done with
like-minded people. It is even more rewarding. We have a couple of favorite camping buddies and one
of them is Richie. We met him at the VW Songkla event and if you haven't seen that video here's
a link to it. Since then we have camped in Mersing and Goping several times. Some of the spots we
actually head out to are recommended by Richie himself. Working together as a team is crucial in
order for camper van trips to be a lot of fun. The more we camp together the better we understand
each other's personalities. Even Roxy and Beau understand our camper van culture and know their
own job description. A good leader is also a good follower and under these circumstances with the
right company it becomes a breeze to be one role or the other. When you camp together often enough
conversations become more soulful. Rene set off bright and early that morning to go and get
breakfast and when he came back he brought nasi lemak with him. We sat down and we ate breakfast
together after Richie fried us some sunny side up eggs. After that we began packing and started our
journey to Sungai Lembing. Sungai Lembing is a tin mining town in Kuantan district, Pahang, Malaysia.
Sungai Lembing was a major producer of underground tin. Sungai Lembing town developed in the 1880s
when the British set up the tin mining industry. During their heyday they were among the largest
and the deepest in the world. A museum highlighting the tin mining industry was opened in 2003.
The museum is housed in an old bungalow once used by the mine manager. Today the town of Sungai Lembing
is in decline although it was once the richest town in Pahang known as El Dorado of the east.
Today many of the wooden shop lots are closed and people are moving away. At the far end of town an
old wooden building still stands overlooking a padang where social activities are held.
After spending the afternoon exploring this little town we headed to our campsite called
Camp Stay Sungai Lembing. This campsite is by a river and it is owned by a nice Malay couple.
We set up camp here for one night and decided to park right by the river even though there were
no trees to shade us. If you do come here be sure to set up camp where there are plenty of trees
which is further up the ground. We spray down Roxy and Bo with organics kinetics debug pads
to repel all insects and ticks. It's organic and won't harm them. And for those annoying mosquitoes
that we hate so much we use organics kinetics moss room spray and this stuff really helps us
keep those pesky insects out of Van Halen. Because of the surrounding jungle the temperature here
drops dramatically by night. As soon as we arrived we hustled to get our campfire started and then
we jumped into the Sungai Lembing river for a quick swim. The current here is pretty strong
so if you are here be careful. Keep an eye on your kids especially if they decide to swim.
The sleep we had here in this campsite was one of the best we ever experienced. We were lucky
enough to see plenty of stars out and we heard the roars of wild jungle cats across the riverbank.
It is extremely quiet and peaceful here at night but by day sadly we could hear the cracking of
giant trees being brought down cleared for more palm oil plantations. We flew the drone around
the area and this was what we discovered across the riverbank. What are your feelings about this?
Leave us comments below. The next morning we packed and left for the next location.
