Mama Bear's first time on Roro Ferry. We're heading to Langkawi and we're
gonna go look at a lot of boats. Hopefully we'll find something that we like.
I'd like to dedicate this song to all you mad campers in the house.
Morning. Morning. Where are we? We are in...
Don't know where. Secret place. And we have a freshwater stream here and then we have
island on one side and we have mamak with us. Chef's time.
Since we've been here we've managed to find a friend, a subscriber and his name is Mo. We call
him Captain Mo. And it's with him that we're going to go to Rabat. We're using his little dinghy
and we've towed it here. I feel the heat. This is the famous Azhar sailing Sabaria.
Our toilet. This is our house warming. House warming gift from Azhar.
Thank you so much. So I take it? Okay. So I dropped the toilet guys. It's inside there.
I didn't drop it. I opened the lid and then it fell backwards.
Okay. Standby to... Standby to pull my toilet up. I think I have to go in.
It's good. Good boat seat. Thank you.
Today we're here to view a few boats from Rachel. She is the owner of SYS Yacht Broker here in
Langkawi. They're based here on Rabat Island and she's been in contact with us when we actually
wanted to buy Namara. And Namara is over there actually. But we didn't go ahead with it in the
end because we thought we were too new and we wanted to get more experience. So in the end we
ended up accepting the offer to go to Pangkor Marina with James. And that's where we spent
four months learning everything we could about maintenance and changing through hulls and about
sailboats. So we've gained a little bit of confidence in terms of buying a boat and we're
here to view a few boats. And before we go in, I want to show you the marina behind us. That's
the wet berth where boats can berth. Over here is where you arrive. And over there is the hard stand
where if you want to do any kind of boat work, you can go there. And behind me here, they have
a swimming pool, restaurant, bungalows. You basically have the whole island to yourself.
Private island. To be honest, sailing and living on a sailboat is not a dream of mine. It is Sam's
and over the past two years, she has really obsessed over it and found ways to be part of
sailing. She wants to experience what she sees on YouTube from all the sailing channels she watches.
YouTube really is powerful. She is convinced that we will learn to love this lifestyle of
living on the ocean. Malaysia is hot and the heat is what I think will make it challenging,
but there are ways to get around this. Overall, I'm a little skeptical, but I am willing to give
it a go. So the day has come for us to finally buy our own sailboat and a deal is a deal.
The first boat we're going to see, it's going to be hectic climate. We made a pact two years ago
to learn on other people's boats first in order to gain experience and if we accomplish certain
goals, I agreed that we will look for one to buy and so here we are in Langkawi going through all
sorts of boats. And then the V-Booth up in front. Over here, there's one more area to sleep,
but we use that storage. This is the chart plotting table. Something tells me that the
engine room is going to be a place where I have to squeeze myself into quite often.
Where the magic will happen. Eating, editing, sleeping, chilling out. We viewed several
sailboats of various sizes from 27 feet all the way up to 42 feet. We didn't limit ourselves
because we wanted to gain a true sense of space. After spending time viewing so many sailboats,
surprisingly, we found that we were okay with a smaller size boat, provided we had a clear deck
to walk on and a spacious cockpit. After all the viewings, we were clear about which sailboat was
the one. It was a boat that we had noticed two years ago, but at that time, we didn't know it
was the right sailboat for us. Probably because we didn't have others to compare it with and it was
during lockdown, so boat viewings were difficult. Sam showed me this sailboat many times, but I was
worried about it being full keel and slow in light winds. I still am a little concerned, but I think
we have to just try and learn from here onwards. If we fall, we fall forward. On our list of must-haves
was a good engine with easy accessibility, a spacious cockpit, a well-loved boat that was
cared for by her previous owners, we looked for accessible chain plates, a functional galley,
a good sail plan, and a full keel or a skeg-hung rudder.
