Hey guys, it's Megan. So in today's video, I'm going to be showing you guys how to
make this DIY fidget spinner using polymer clay,
and this was super easy to make, so let's just get into it.
So the most important part for this project that you'll need are some ball
bearings, and I got these from Amazon and I will
link them down below, but if you don't want to order them
online, you could always go to a thrift store and get an old skateboard or some
old roller skates. Roller skates would probably be
better because then you could get eight of them,
but you can find these for pretty cheap. So on your bearing, there will most
likely be a metal cover on the middle part,
so to remove this, I just took an exacto knife and I punctured the inner
part of the cover, and I just loosened it up until I could get it off.
And you'll just want to do this on both sides of the bearing,
and you're going to repeat this for four bearings.
And definitely take your time and be careful with this, and if you're younger,
definitely get an adult to help you. And once you've removed the cap from all
four bearings, you're going to want to take some WD-40,
and you're just going to want to soak the bearings in the WD-40 for about 15
minutes. And after the 15 minutes, I transferred
the bearings into some alcohol, and I used 70% isopropyl alcohol, but
any type of alcohol will do. And I left the bearings in the alcohol
for five minutes before transferring them into some hot water.
And to make the fidget spinner itself, you're going to need some polymer clay,
and I decided to use this glow-in-the-dark polymer clay.
And you'll also need this template, which I will link down below.
And so what you're going to want to do is take a ball of your polymer clay
and roll it out to the thickness of your bearings.
And I found it helpful to place bearings on either side
of the polymer clay while I was rolling it out to act sort of as a template to
make sure that I had the right thickness. Once my polymer clay was rolled out, I
took the template that I had cut out previously,
and I cut around it with an exacto knife. And once I had the general shape cut out,
I went ahead and I put the bearings into the polymer clay just to make sure that
they fit. Then I carefully flipped the fidget
spinner over, and I cut off any excess clay
that got stuck to the back of the bearings. And then I just went ahead and
smoothed out all of the edges and tried to make everything as even as possible.
And once you're happy with the shape, you're going to want to place the spinner
into the freezer for about 10 minutes. And this just
makes it easier to pop out the bearings before baking it.
And then just bake the piece according to your package directions.
And once the piece is out of the oven and cooled, you're going to want to take
your bearings and just pop them back into place.
And they should fit pretty snugly, but if they end up not fitting, you can just
take an exacto knife or some sandpaper and just go ahead and sand off any
excess. And you could glue the bearings into
place, but mine fit snugly enough that I didn't think it was necessary.
And so this is how my finished fidget spinner came out, and I'm really happy
with it. I'm obsessed with it. I think that it's so cool, and I'm
definitely going to have to sand down the edges later, but it does work
really well. And the great thing about it being made with polymer clay is that you
can make it into any color or design that you want.
And obviously I made this one glow-in-the-dark, but I was thinking
about making another one that is like galaxy, like these galaxy clay stars that
I made. So thank you guys so so much for
watching, and if you're not already and you'd like to be, make sure to subscribe
