Hello I'm Jon and in this video I'm going to give you some tips if you're planning to travel to the Riviera Maya
As you know if you've seen my vlogs you saw that I traveled to Mexico City for 3 weeks for work
And then I took a weekend and went to the Riviera Maya because I didn't want to leave without visiting it
I was there for 2 days and I wish I could come back to stay a week 10 days whatever it takes because it's a damned paradise
To fly to the Riviera Maya you have several airlines from Spain if you're traveling with Iberia or Mexico Airlines that take you to Cancun
But in my case I came from Mexico City
If you're traveling from Mexico City there are three main companies that I know of: Viva Aerobús Volaris and Interjet
The cheapest of all is Viva Aerobús and it has probably given you very affordable prices to go to Cancún
I flew with Volaris and the truth is that it went pretty well but there are some things you need to keep in mind
For example Viva Aerobús as I've been told I haven't used it but people from Mexico who have used it
He said the prices were very cheap but he had the problem of not knowing whether to pick up the flight or not
So they are flights that experience many delays often even getting canceled meaning that it's not the most reliable company
For me Volaris or Interjet are companies that are quite better and offer better service even if the price is a little higher
Something interesting if you're not Mexican or if you're not used to these airlines at least for me it's the first time I've seen it
The thing is they offer you the checked bag for free meaning the one that goes in the cargo hold and you have to pay for the one that goes in the cabin
It's the opposite in Europe for example meaning that the free allowance is always for the cabin and if you want to pay an extra you add more weight to have it checked
But here it was the opposite so I was alone with the cabin bag a small suitcase they made me check it but anyway I didn't have any problems
But it was a change in concept from what I was used to
The flight from Spain I don't know I guess it lasted about 12 hours or so while from Mexico it was quite short maybe a couple of hours or less
And the truth is it's very good once you arrive in Cancun you can already do the Interjet you want
What to visit or where to stay in the Riviera Maya This is where you want to be
From my experience I didn't want to stay in Cancun because Cancun is a area that is completely dedicated to family resort tourism
So all the hotels practically are these huge resorts with giant swimming pools lots of services and there's nothing wrong with it it's great
But I see it more for families or people who don't want to leave the hotel much I would have spent the whole weekend on it
I was only staying for two days because I didn't want to stay in a hotel I wanted to visit everything I could
Then I didn't care if a hotel offered all-inclusive when I wasn't going to take advantage of it
I preferred to stay in Airbnbs apartments small hotels and use them just to sleep and then leave
Then Cancun I think it's already too crowded for this type offering
So my personal recommendation is that once you land in Cancun get off and stay either in Playa del Carmen or Tulum
Any of those places is perfect for me
Playa del Carmen is an incredible place it's beautiful it has super nice beaches but it's also becoming quite crowded
So I wasn't there years ago but from what people who have been there have told me it started out like Cancun in its early days
A small seaside village with its little houses and such small and the typical little shops that sell local things and such
Now if you go you'll see it's a town like that small very much a beach area
but the entire area everything that is the promenade what is called Fifth Avenue is full of restaurants and shops already
What about Zara what about H&M the most typical ones even restaurants big chains
It has become very globalized and the party as you will see is filled with Americans especially
But anyway it's a party the typical nightclub party not so
much a beachside bar as it could before but already big venues
Then the problem I see is that it's also becoming quite widespread
so I recommend that the further south you can go the better
For me the best area was Tulum I didn't stay any night in Tulum
I stayed in Playa del Carmen but whenever I could I went to Tulum because to me it's still a paradise
In Tulum you have some beaches that are also becoming quite famous
Then it gets crowded I recommend you go to a beach club
What are beach clubs They are basically private beaches that are owned and managed by companies
Then they are beaches that tend to be much emptier because there's no
fee This is something else I want to mention in case people don't know
You can park in these spots and enjoy the beach for free
What you can't do is use the hammocks there in the area or use the towels
Do not use anything from the local's or club's infrastructure
But on the beach you can just lie on the sand
bring your own towel and enjoy it the same way and there's almost no one there
I went to a beach club called Papaya Playa and it was great there was almost no one there
You were lying there on the sunbeds you were at the bar
what that place had was a minimum consumption of 25 euros
That's what they charge you for using the towels for using the loungers
but it's not that you pay an entrance fee it's that you have to spend that
It's in drinks and food so when I went without eating you see
When you ask for something like drinks well once I went and it worked out
But there are other beach clubs in the area that are also very good
There's a beach called Playa Pescadores I think
It should be a beach that's quite deserted one that not many people know about
actually I'm not going to tell you the location if you want to go you'll find it
And I wasn't there but Bizarma recommended it to me who if you don't know
I leave below the link to their Diario de un Viajero channel which
is very good they are uploading trips up the eastern slope and so on
So I highly recommend his channel and he told me about when he was there
The time when he was with his wife that they were on a beach called that
at they saw and that there was no one that it was the typical
the idea she has is of a paradise beach so the next time she goes for sure
Come to this beach so thank you very much Bizarma
and nothing else if you find it then here is the recommendation
What is the problem with the Riviera Maya
compared to other areas of Mexico such as Mexico City
It's an area that's obviously very focused on
tourism so you'll find that prices are quite inflated
Regarding what the country's standard of living really is tourists
are greatly taken advantage of so you also have to be careful
For example in Mexico City I would take a taxi
so a one-hour taxi ride could cost me 8 or 9 euros
And in Cancun for example to go from the airport to my hotel
he charged me around 30 or 40 euros for half an hour of travel
They take a lot so keep that in mind
To get around the Riviera Maya I recommend renting a super cheap car
I think when I rented the car it cost me around 10 euros a day
Yes it's perfect it's super functional and the roads are straight
if you take Cancún and want to go to Tulum it's a straight line
Don't be late at all it's not complicated in any
way I wouldn't even take a GPS just use your phone
You can use Google Maps with downloaded maps or any other app
But it's just a straight shot if you want to go to Tulum the signs are there and you get there without stopping
If you are a diver I recommend you visit the Riviera Maya
If you like diving take advantage of it there areas with crystal clear water
I'm seeing that it's impeccable you see little fish you see a wild fauna
It's amazing I haven't been able to dive yet because I don't have the certification
I didn't have time to take it out and I didn't have much time there either I did
a bit of snorkeling and that's about it but I recommend that if you like this
Think about leaving this spot open so you can go diving because it's spectacular
If you like diving there is a place that is also very well known which is Cozumel
which is an island located just in front of Playa del Carmen
Here is a ferry that takes you which must be quite famous for diving
After visiting the Riviera Maya which is typical I would go to Chichen Itza
You don't need to spend an entire day in Chichen
Itza a few hours is enough I recommend going very early
To visit Chichen Itza I recommend you go with a guide
because unless you are geologists or very interested in history and this kind of thing
But you will surely go to the pyramids and not know the meaning of things
I went with a guide I went with a tour booked through
Viator which I recommended in my Mexico City tips video
They have a tour that's very good it's in the morning you have to get up early
You wake up at 5 in the morning but the good thing is that you're here first
Without people to take photos to enjoy the whole area it explains
perfectly everything about the historical topic of the Mayan pyramids
Why everything is made
this way and such and I highly recommend it because the experience is sometimes much better
If you go and see the pyramids like that because if you go and you don't know what they are
I'm going to see how beautiful the pyramids are take a few
photos and then leave but knowing the history the background they are spectacular
If you want to go on your own Chichen Itza is not a loss
if you take the car and you arrive there in two hours
It is a straight path that shows you everything that is the jungle
on both sides and a straight road that goes straight to the pyramids
On the other hand what you absolutely have to
visit aside from the beaches are the cenotes
What are cenotes They are natural water wells in the area of Mexico
there are thousands it is the area
that has the most cenotes in the world
The best known are a few but well I recommend
going to whichever one is convenient or informed
And whichever one you like the most go there you don't have to go to the most popular
one From what I have read and heard and I didn't go to that one
One of the best cenotes is the one near Chichen Itza called
Il Kil or something like that I'll leave the name below
But it is next to the pyramids a 5-minute drive away
And not many people go there and it's a cenote which from the pictures I've seen is spectacular
I recommend that if you go on your own to the pyramids go to this cenote
If not near Tulum for example you have the great cenote which is the one I was in
It's very good but not very big it's suitable for a bit of snorkeling
And there are others the Blue Cenote I don't know there are many cenotes
in the area especially along the road from Tulum to Playa del Carmen
He will see many signs around the cenote this cenote that cenote
Yes go park I think it's about 5 euros for the average entrance to each cenote
And you bathe there What's good about the cenotes
For example my ideal plan is to go to the beach in the morning
Tulum Playa del Carmen there they are like lizards in the sun
Taking a bath in very salty but very warm water is great
And when you leave there go to a cenote because they are cenotes with fresh sweet water
It's like it revives you after a morning at the beach leaving you feeling brand new
Then more ruins like in Tulum for example you also have a small pyramid
a castle they called it next to the coast
These are spectacular images of the Tulum ruins so I highly recommend them
there is also a lot of wildlife there like iguanas coatis
Then they are definitely worth visiting
Then if you are going with family if you are staying for more days other places that I recommend then
They are theme parks called Xcaret Selja I can't remember the name of the other one
There are three or four now some are called Xenses or something like that
And there are places that are very good for example Xcaret which I think is the most well-known
Well it's an area with cenotes corals and different pools
it's like a closed artificial enclosure that's the enclosure
But inside it's set up because you have everything organized so you can go as a family
and enjoy all the different parts of the Riviera Maya in one place
Then there are also performances the fire juggling
show or actors performing like the Maya ball game
Then there are a few shows that are definitely worth watching
So if you're there for a few days spending a full day in one of these parks is very worthwhile
Another thing to keep in mind are the cenotes and even the visits you want to make close early
I think the cenotes close around 5 in the afternoon
Then don't think I'm at the beach until 6 and then in the evening I'm going to a cenote
No they close soon so I would leave around noon or so
Then I would move on to something else or go back to the beach or visit the ruins or whatever
Well I'm sure I'll forget some things but anyway if you have any questions feel free to ask me
If I see that there are many I'll make another video if not I'll respond to each of you individually as always no problem at all
And nothing else I hope you enjoyed this video that it serves you well
If you have any other questions well you also have the videos I leave them below in the playlist
With the videos I made of both the city of Mexico and the latest ones in the Riviera Maya
so that they can be useful and good and to get ideas
And nothing else see you in the next video thank you very much for getting this far
nothing else until next time goodbye
