Hey guys it's Harley and today I'm going to be doing a video all about water propagating and
I'm going to water propagate some plants and talk you through my process. Honestly my process is a
lot more straightforward I feel like than a lot of people's processes like I don't know I just kind
of stick the plants in water and they just get roots like I don't use like rooting hormone or
anything like that and I haven't had any problems. So I do really like water propagating because I
love to be able to see the root systems form and in my opinion it's really really nice to be able to
like watch the roots develop and if the roots aren't developing or you can I mean I don't know
you can just kind of keep tabs on the plant a little bit better than if it's in soil where
you can't see the roots. I don't know about you guys but when I've tried to propagate in soil
I get so like like it kind of stresses me out almost and I find myself like pulling the plant
out every day to see if there's roots and of course that isn't good for the plant that's trying
to form roots like that stresses it out. I don't know just for my personality type where I like to
know what's going on and I'm super nosy water propagation is the best method. So of course what
we're going to need are some plants to propagate. Here I have some bougainvilleas, bougainvilleas,
bougainvilleas I think is what it is that I took from outside just now and then I have some
bridal veil cuttings and I have some other plants I may end up taking like a couple of cuttings from
so we'll see what happens there. The very first thing I like to do is I take my cutting I'm
starting with this bridal vine and I pull off the bottom two leaves on the nodes um so I just
like to leave two nodes exposed so I'm gonna go ahead and pull all these off and honestly bridal
veil is my favorite plant to water propagate because it happens so rapidly and like I don't
if you ever propagate it you'll like be shocked at how quickly the root systems form. So anyway
I've got the bottom two nodes cut off of all the plants so you can see the leaves all start at like
the leaves all start at like the same points um on the plant. So for the bridal veil I'm going to use
this glass vial I got at Hobby Lobby. They came in like a set of four glasses and I actually got
them for a DIY video I'm going to be doing and then pour it in the jar because this one's like
mouth is a little bit smaller the neck of the bowl fill it up most of the way not all the way
plop them in there and it's really cool
made a mess yeah so this is what she looks like I do have a table where I keep all of my water
propagations just to kind of keep it like condensed in one area so there aren't little
glass containers all over my house because it was like that not that long ago and it stressed me out
so much I mean I don't use I know a lot of people use like rooting hormone or something like that
I never have I don't really see a point I mean I'm sure there's a point because everybody uses it
but I don't know I've had great luck not so on the bougainvillea I'm going to pull off the bottom
leaves and then cut off these long things I don't know what they are they're kind of freaking me out
a little bit to be honest with you they look like um like chicken talons something to consider about
water propagating is a lot of plants you can keep them in water for quite some time but I like to
repot them once the roots have gotten so big I'm really quick just going to cut off the like flower
stems because I don't want it to flower I want it to form roots I'm going to propagate these in this
fill it up with water I like to use room temperature water so what I'll do is I just
let the water sit out overnight in the glass bottles um so it can change temperature to
whatever my house is at okay let me get my head straight another thing to consider when you're
propagating is you want to make sure that the plant the plant needs oxygen and the oxygen is
in the water going to want to change the water every few days just whenever like it comes to
mind you don't have to do it every day or even sometimes I'll skip like a week and the plants
are fine just make sure that you're still changing the water here and there and especially depending
on what size your glass vial is really makes a difference so yeah I mean I buy a lot of my
the glass things I use for this from the DI like I got this thing from the DI I got this thing from
the dollar store here I have like a little Nutella bottle I'm going to use um this is a beer bottle
and then this is a peach green tea bottle so yeah I mean you really can use anything as long
of course as it can hold water so I actually think I'm going to propagate a little bit of my
Monstera abinsonii so what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut it here um so I have three nodes
and then I'm going to cut the leaves so there's like a little bit of a flat part right here and
this is where the roots are going to come out of and it's I like rooting plants like this so this
philodendron and pothos I really really like to propagate this way because then the roots form
out of both sides and it really helps anchor the plant once you plant it yeah so I'm going to
continue doing that on all of my little cuttings I mean you can also like do what I did on these
ones and pull off the bottom few stems if it's a vining plant like this but um just depending on
what you you want the plant to look like when you are all finished with it depends on how you're
going to cut it so if you want a more like bushy plant then you're going to do it like this if you
want it to be a long hanging plant then you're going to do it the other way how I did the bridal
bell so let's find a bottle to put these bevies in okay I actually ended up taking a cutting from
my philodendron brazil and I'm going to stick it in the bottle with the monstera abinsonii
and I'm going to propagate it the same way actually how do I want to do no I think I'm
going to do this one as a vine so I'm going to pull off the bottom two leaves now it's just like
this little thing just plop it in there I have never had a problem with mixing my plants in one
container just make sure the water is covering at least the bottom um node so really quick I'm
going to take you to two different sections of my house where I have propagating plants
and show you kind of what it looks like I keep them in front of a south window or a never eat
soggy or a west window so let's go look at that so here in front of my south window is my first
propagation station here I just have it in like this plastic bowl thing so that if I spill any
water it's not going to go all over my house which can really really suck um so I have some polka dot
plant propagating here this one has some pretty spectacular roots yeah this guy flowered while
he was in the bottle you can kind of see up top he still has some buds that are growing in one of my
favorite plants to water propagate is actually um polka dot plant because they form like roots
very very rapidly and they just do super well so like a few days ago this guy was blooming I've had
him in this water for quite some time now like probably a couple of months and he's just done
really well and I mean those roots though look at them it's so cool so this is a cross sander plant
and this is another one you can see that has formed roots out of the bottom this one took
probably four to six weeks to propagate so I've had it in water for quite some time now but it
just got this root like a couple of days ago so it just took a lot of patience and waiting but it's
finally there and it's doing really well here I have three more plants I've been water propagating
so this one is a peperomia ruby cascade um you can kind of see some of the small roots forming
in there they start out really tiny on this plant and it does kind of take a while the next door I
have some peperomia prostrata that doesn't have roots yet um and then here I have some angel vine
that has some roots down there like these little white lines you can see at the bottom are root I
keep them all in this glass tub so that when that happens it's not a big deal dang it I'm actually
kind of happy that happened because you can see the roots a lot better now that it's out of the
bottle um but yeah I mean this one is an angel vine and it water propagates super easily I am
keeping this one in the jar just because I've been experimenting on how long they will last in
water this one has been there for several weeks and I just want to see if they'll continue like
growing more roots and shooting out new green growth while it's in there I mean you can see
this one has a new leaf up top there so I like to keep my water propagation station and like baby
plants that with that need really moist soil all together on this table next to some of my more
humid loving plants I have my sensitive plant back here I have some avocado I'm trying to grow this
one just got a leaf um but yeah just because the bottles obviously create humidity so I like to
kind of keep them all together here um they just kind of work together a lot more a lot better in
my opinion if that makes any sense um another place I like to keep propagating plants is on
this shelf on top of this book case so I like to keep propagating plants on the shelf up here it's
again facing a south window so they're getting very good lighting here I love the look of random
bottles all lined up together especially on this wood shelf I don't know there's just something I
super love about it but yeah so back there I have a monstera adansonii I have some golden pothos
um here I have bridal veil here I have some traniscantia this one is devil's ivy um I have
what are these called string of pearls and then back here I have my satanthla bursiana I think
is how you say it uh but yeah I just recently water propagated a section like this so I kind
of want to show you on this one actually this one doesn't have the typical like how do I say it
bulgy part I don't know this one is just different so I just cut I have successfully water propagated
one of these before um and I just cut it so that there's about an inch after where the leaves are
forming and it'll grow roots out of where the joint is like where all those leaves are pulling
out of but I really like the way this one looks as it propagates it just I don't know it's really
cool all fanned out like that in my opinion what else what else what else something else I think
is really important for water propagation is patience sometimes I will have plants rooting
for weeks and weeks and I'm like this thing is never going to root but as long as the leaves
aren't changing color or the plant isn't dying then that means that it's working on building new
leaves I mean it just really honestly it really just takes some time be patient if the leaves
aren't changing color chances are it's working on root growth so did I have anything else I wanted
to add so anyway I know this was a really basic laid back video but if you have any more questions
leave them in the comments down below let me know what your favorite plant to water propagate is and
if you prefer water or soil propagation and why I do learn a lot from your comments so I appreciate
you guys leaving any tips and tricks down there as well and any of your feedback so anyway thank
you so much for watching I will see my next one bye
