Football is a sport that has the power to bring together fans from all over the world,
and when it comes to rivalries, none are as fierce as the one between Manchester United
and Real Madrid. These two clubs have a long and storied history, with some of the greatest
players to ever grace the game donning the jerseys of both teams. In this video, we will
look at the top five players who have played for both Manchester United and Real Madrid.
From goal-scoring legends to midfield maestros and defensive stalwarts,
these players have left an incredible mark on both clubs and have cemented their place
in the annals of football history. So keep your shorts on and let's roll the tape.
Gabriel Heinze joined Manchester United in 2004 from Paris Saint-Germain. Operating as a left-back,
he scored on his debut for the Red Devils against Bolton and had a pretty promising debut season,
even winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. However, Heinze's time at Manchester
United was marred by injuries and competition for the left-back spot with the arrival of Patrice
Evra. A serious injury in September 2005 limited Heinze to just six appearances for the season.
He was drafted in at centre-back by Sir Alex Ferguson due to an injury crisis once he returned,
but a lack of regular first-team action saw him demand a transfer to rivals Liverpool,
which angered United fans and Sir Alex. Actions that Heinze later stated he regretted.
Both sides brought in lawyers, but Sir Alex Ferguson refused to sanction the deal
and accepted an £8m bid from Real Madrid instead, leaving United after making 83
appearances and scoring four goals. Heinze joined Madrid in 2007 and won
one La Liga title and made 60 appearances during his two years in Spain before moving to Marseille
in 2009. Despite his success at Madrid, injuries and poor form meant that he never truly established
himself in Spain. At his best, Heinze was an excellent player at Old Trafford, but injuries
marred the talented left-back's career. Despite his injuries, Heinze was still a valuable player
during his time at Manchester United and Real Madrid, winning the Premier League and La Liga.
The Mexican's capture was a masterstroke by Ferguson back in 2010. Chicharito became a
fan favourite and a cult figure at Old Trafford. Despite his role of mostly coming off the bench,
he reached double figures in all but one of his seasons under United's most successful manager,
including 20 in his debut season, netting crucial goals against the likes of Chelsea
and Liverpool under the Scot. But once Ferguson retired in 2013 and was replaced by David Moyes,
Chicharito was not valued in the same way and soon fell down the pecking order.
After being deemed surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal, Chicharito completed a surprise
loan move to Real Madrid in August 2014. His spell at the Bernabeu was fairly successful.
Despite playing a sporadic role for the club, Hernandez stepped up when needed, scoring the
winner in the Champions League quarter-finals against bitter rivals Atletico. The Mexican
striker netted the winner in the 88th minute to send the home faithful into raptures and securing
a place in the semi-finals for Real. However, the striker failed to establish himself as a
regular in the team and Los Blancos unsurprisingly chose not to take up their option to buy at the
end of the season. Instead, Hernandez left for Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015.
He has also been at West Ham and Sevilla and currently plays for LA Galaxy in the MLS.
In 157 appearances for United, Chicharito scored 59 goals and provided 20 assists with two league
titles in 2010-11 and 2012-13, while his time at Madrid saw him net nine goals in 33 appearances.
Manchester United rating 7 out of 10. Real Madrid rating 5 out of 10.
Number 3. Ruud van Nistelrooy
Ruud van Nistelrooy is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the Premier League era.
He played a key role in Manchester United's rivalry with Thierry Henry and
Arsenal in the early 2000s and remains a massive part of United's history.
Van Nistelrooy joined United in 2001 and quickly established himself as one of the
most prolific goal scorers in the club's history, scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances
during his five years at Old Trafford. He won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2002-03
with 25 top-flight goals and 44 across all competitions. He was also a key member of the
team and his performances were instrumental in United's success during that period,
winning the Premier League and even becoming the PFA Player of the Year in his first season.
However, in 2006, following an explosive bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson, van Nistelrooy decided
to leave Old Trafford and Real Madrid swooped in, signing the Dutch goal machine. Van Nistelrooy
continued to excel in Madrid, scoring 64 goals in 96 games and winning back-to-back La Liga
titles. He also won the Pechichi with 25 goals in his first season with Madrid. Despite his
success in Madrid, injury problems began to take their toll during the third season.
With the likes of Karim Benzema being brought in, van Nistelrooy moved to Bundesliga-side Hamburg in
2010. Reflecting on his time at United and Madrid, van Nistelrooy said,
I never regretted it because it was finished. It was time to move on for me and the club.
If I would have stayed, it would not have been the same. Real Madrid was a good move.
I didn't regret it. I never regretted that I left because it was finished. It was time to move on
for me and the club. If I would have stayed, it would not have been the same.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is one of the few players who found success at Manchester United
and Real Madrid. Renowned for his astute finishing ability, he is still considered
one of the most lethal strikers to have played in the Premier League and La Liga.
He is also among the top scorers in Champions League history with 56 goals.
His legacy at both clubs lives on to this day as a true goal-scoring machine,
having won the Premier League and FA Cup with United and two La Liga titles with Madrid.
Widely regarded as one of the most talented and famous footballers of his generation,
he began his career as part of the famous Class of 92 at Manchester United's academy.
He announced himself to the world with that goal against Wimbledon and quickly established
himself as a key player for the club. During his time at Old Trafford, Beckham played a crucial
role in United's historic treble-winning season, as well as lifting six Premier League trophies
and two FA Cups. However, in 2003, a flying boot signalled the end of his Old Trafford career.
Despite appearing set for a move to Barcelona,
the former England international ultimately joined Madrid in a £24.5 million deal.
Beckham moved to Real Madrid, joining the club's Galacticos project under Florentino Pérez.
The temptation of being part of a unique side assembled by Pérez was too hard to turn down.
Beckham's move to Madrid coincided with his rise as a global superstar,
and his transfer proved more fruitful off the pitch than on.
Despite being a popular figure at the Bernabeu, Beckham could never quite shake off the image,
much to his annoyance that he had been brought in to sell shirts and become the poster boy of
the Galacticos brand after scoring just 20 goals in 155 games. Despite the lack of trophies won
in Madrid, Beckham's legacy at both clubs lives on to this day. He is still remembered for his
free kick and passing ability, and his iconic goals against Wimbledon, Sevilla and Greece.
In terms of trophies, his time at Old Trafford far exceeded his years in Madrid. At United,
he won 13 trophies, while in Madrid he won just one Super Cup and one La Liga title.
Beckham, however, is still held in high regard at Madrid,
and is considered a bona fide legend at Old Trafford.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the best player on the list, Cristiano Ronaldo,
is undoubtedly one of the greatest footballers to have played the game,
and his career is forever linked to both Manchester United and Real Madrid.
He joined United in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon at 18, and under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson,
he developed into one of the best players in the world. Under Ferguson, Ronaldo turned from a boy
with highlights in his hair to one of the most feared players in the world, scoring 118 goals
in 292 appearances across six seasons. The Portuguese star also won three Premier League
titles, a Champions League and, most importantly, his first Ballon d'Or.
In 2009, despite Ferguson insisting that he wouldn't sell Madrid a virus,
United eventually accepted, at the time, a world record fee of £80 million for the
Portuguese international, which later proved to be a bargain for the player that he became.
Nurtured under Sir Alex at United, Ronaldo hit his peak at Madrid.
His numbers at the club proved that he is one of the greatest to have ever played the game.
In Spain, Ronaldo won four Ballon d'Ors and as many Champions League trophies,
along with two La Liga titles, amongst a host of silverware. And his regular tussles with
Lionel Messi for the Pichichi saw him net an incredible 450 goals in 438 games.
Ronaldo also became the all-time top scorer in the UEFA Champions League during his time at
Madrid. The icon eventually returned to Old Trafford at the age of 36, after three years
at Juventus. However, the romantic reunion didn't quite work out as expected, as both
parties parted ways at the end of 2022. Ronaldo is undoubtedly the greatest success
story to link both United and Madrid. He will be remembered as a legend at both clubs,
and a star who elevated two enormous European names to even greater heights.
