MLB Announces Spring Training Is Delayed 😞

So good news. Major League Baseball and the Players' Association
had a meeting to hopefully come to an agreement so we can get back to baseball.
So according to Evan Drellick, at 1259 p.m. he tweets, MLB has arrived to hear the MLBPA's
latest proposal and thus another collective bargaining meeting begins. Then at 118 p.m.
he tweets again, the meeting between MLB and the MLBPA has ended. 19 minutes.
19 minute meeting. Now I know most meetings, I've been in some meetings, most meetings are
too long, they're too drawn out, people just keep saying the same thing over and over again.
So I understand that you don't want to have like too long of a meeting but a 19 minute meeting,
I don't even know how you say anything in 19 minutes. Now I was able to do some detective
work and I was able to obtain a little, a little tiny piece of that 19 minute meeting.
So let's check it out real quick. In order to expedite these negotiations,
we are prepared to make you a very generous offer. And we are prepared to reject that offer.
Michael, you haven't even heard that. Never accept their first offer.
Now I know it's a joke but I literally think that might be how every single meeting has gone
since the first one back in December. Now also today, unfortunately,
Major League Baseball officially announced the delay and postponement of spring training games.
And so spring training games were supposed to begin February 26th, which is next week.
But now they're saying that games will start no earlier than March 5th. So here's the exact
statement. This is a tweet sent out by Joe Sherman. It says MLB cancels spring games
through March 5th statement. Quote, we regret that without a collective bargaining agreement
in place, we must postpone the start of spring training games until no earlier than Saturday,
March 5th. All 30 clubs are unified in their strong desire to bring players back to the field
and fans back to the stands. The clubs have adopted a uniform policy that provides an option for full
refunds for fans who have purchased tickets from the clubs to any spring training games that are
not taking place. We are committed to reaching an agreement that is fair to each side. On Monday,
members of the owner's bargaining committee will join an in-person meeting with the Players
Association and remain every day next week to negotiate and work hard towards starting the
season on time. Now this was followed up immediately by a statement from Major League Baseball's
Players Association. And they said MLB announced today that it must postpone the start of spring
training games. This is false. Nothing requires the league to delay the start of spring training,
much like nothing required the league's decision to implement the lockout in the first place.
Despite these decisions by the league, players remain committed to the negotiating process.
So both sides clearly still hate each other, which is great. Also my boy, Jeff Passan, he tweeted out
and said, while exact plans are not finalized, MLB and the MLB Players Association intend to hold
multiple bargaining sessions, perhaps every day as early as Monday, sources told ESPN.
Multiple owners and players expect to fly in for sessions leading up to MLB's stated February 28th
deadline. Now he also said, for everyone who's saying, why not sooner? One of the things that
struck me for months now is a majority of the industry people believe a deal could come together
very quickly and that things will accelerate at the end of February. Monday may not be ideal,
but offers plenty of time. So it does sound like now that we are getting closer, the pressure is
starting to kind of be on. And so it sounds like meetings are going to take place a lot more
frequently than they have over the last few months. So I guess that is good news. Again,
things have to go rather quickly now because they've already stated that players need about
four weeks, maybe even a little bit more than four weeks to prepare for the season.
And so again, the season is supposed to start at the very end of March. And so we need players to
basically get to spring training around the beginning of March, which is only 10 or 11 days,
I believe. I think today's February 18th. I don't know. Every day feels the same for me.
So we don't have a whole lot of time, but it does sound like there is going to be
some real urgency this coming week to get something done. So we'll see what happens.
