New MLB Proposal To Players...Will Lockout End?

Okay, on this past Saturday, Major League Baseball and the owners presented
the players in the Players Association with a core economic proposal. And so,
we're going to go through exactly what was proposed, what the differences were from
the prior proposals, and then I'd like to hear what you think about it.
Okay, so we're going to look at a few tweets by John Heyman here. He said,
MLB understood its proposal carried no hope to facilitate a deal in days. The intention,
rather, was to spark talk and trigger more give and take. MLB clearly has more room for flexibility,
but seeks to first see greater movement from players.
So, the meeting lasted about an hour between the Players Association
and the owners. And it was their first meeting in 11 days in their fifth in-person bargaining
session since the lockout started. Now, the Players Association is going to take some time
to look over the proposal. Initial reports, and I've seen a couple of different initial reports,
most have said that they came away unimpressed. That's a real shocker.
However, I have seen a few tweets from players that said they were actually a little bit surprised
that the proposal wasn't as bad as they thought it would be.
Okay, so let's look at a couple of the main points from the proposal. The first thing
is to increase the bonus pool for pre-arbitration players from $10 million to $15 million.
Now, the Players Association is seeking a $100 million pool. Now, this bonus pool would award
money to pre-arbitration players who finish in the top 30 in the league in war.
Now, the next topic is minimum salary. So, MLB proposed a rise in minimum salaries with two
options. So, the first option is just a flat pay of $630,000 with raises possible. The other is
more of a tiered system. So, it's $615,000, $650,000, and then $725,000 up from $700
with fixed salaries on tiered options. So, for this tiered system, it's basically $615,000 for
players with zero to one years of service time, $650,000 with players of service time from one
to two years, and then $725,000 for players with service time between two and three years. And
again, MLB previously offered $700,000 with players that had two and three years of service time.
Now, the Players Association is seeking for a $775,000 minimum at all service time levels.
Okay, the next topic is an increase in the competitive balance tax thresholds. So,
they've offered to increase it to $214 million, then $214 million the next year, then $216 million,
then $218 million, then $222 million. And that would be from 2022 to 2026. Now, in the previous
offer, it was $214 million from 2022 to 2024, $216 million in 2025, and $220 million in 2026.
Now, the Players Association is seeking a $245 million threshold in 2022. And the threshold
last year was $210 million. So, early in the week, Rob Bamford said that they were going to
offer a good faith proposal. And a lot of players kind of laughed at that.
But again, I have seen a few players that have said that this is better than they thought was
going to be offered. And here's another tweet again from John that says, sign of life from
labor talks, MLB made a proposal today. And the anonymous reaction from two player side people is
that it's not as terrible as most expected. Now, we're not exactly sure when both of these sides
are going to talk again, but this is what we have so far. So, seems to me like there's still
a pretty big gap between what one side is offering and what one side wants. How quickly will that gap
close and will it close? I guess we have to wait and see. But no spring training on time, at least
that's the way it looks like it right now because pitchers and catchers should be reporting basically
right now. So, let me know what you think. Let me know what you think about the proposal. Let me
know what you think is going to happen. And I will keep you up to date with more info once I
receive it. That's all we have. Thanks so much for watching. Subscribe to the channel, hit the
