Well it's a new day and we're already here in Split during the day
And nothing else I'm going to show you the part of the fortification that I couldn't show you well yesterday because it was nighttime and everything was closed
Today I will be able to start entering the sites
Split most characteristic is a closed courtyard where Emperor Diocletian's palace was built when the Romans conquered this part of Croatia
Then it was the whole city and in the middle like a very large square where everything went
They were the temples the cathedral the tombs where the emperor lived etc
Then all of that was walled in
Then here we are behind me is the wall which has a few entrances
It has three gates to the city called the Iron Gate the Golden Gate and the Silver Gate
Here we have one of them
What's really cool about Split is that during the day it's filled with markets
Now this part that's here is still being set up
Well this is more aimed at tourists because it's right in the
central area It even has little flags of the countries and stuff
But a bit away from the entrance there was a large market for fruits and vegetables
Yes every day that is today is Wednesday it's not any special day of the week and that's how they're setting it up
Here is the first kitten of the day
And nothing else this is the inner part of the city
You have seen how easily I have entered
This would not have been so easy a few centuries ago
Here is another entrance located to the north of the city which is the Golden Gate
Well here we are in the central square of the Diocletian Palace called the Peristyle Square
And from here is the Cathedral of Saint Duille which is what crowns the entire interior
Since the Cathedral San Duille's is from the 4th century it makes it one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals in the world
The most distinctive feature is that there is a sphinx here at the entrance and two types of dragons
There are very good views from the bell tower
So let's try to go up and see the city views from there
Well we started putting things here on the narrow and steep path
Oh if I didn't have enough with yesterday's minaret now I have to climb this bell tower
Here another floor up and that's the bell section
Interestingly inside a bell tower who would have thought but I'm catching my breath
He's really cool there's like the biggest bell here and then another bell system here That
is there are a lot of bells
The roads are quite narrow for passing I haven't
had breakfast yet it's 8 in the morning and it shows
Well I've already climbed all the way up and the truth is from here the views are amazing
That is you can see the entire city of Split
There the entire walled area
And then one of the entries Oh look at the sea
Then one of the entrances is through the underground passage of Diocletian's palace which is this one here
Here and that would be the iron gate
Then would be the silver gate which is the one I entered through at the beginning which is there
And then the golden door which I mentioned earlier was to the north that's over there
The views from up here are really cool
I'll leave you some pictures now
I'm coming in March because it's the low season and it's also good to see the 8 because there's no one there
Oh it's the typical bell tower that would be full of people because the climb is super cheap
And now I have the luck to be alone
That's great
By the way if you want to go up and you're in a wheelchair you have to get into the child's cart or whatever which is complicated
Oh here there's nothing but stairs and more stairs and very narrow ones
Okay now let's go into what was the basement of Diocletian's palace
It is also used as one of the underground entrances but it was even used before to collect garbage
And indeed it was full of garbage and they emptied it not too long ago
We are in Diocletian's basement which is the tourist attraction so you need to buy a ticket
Yes I'm alone no one else It's amazing There are no tourists today
And then this basement was initially used when the palace was built to level the different parts of the fortified city that had been constructed
Because the northern part and the southern part were uneven
But later it was given other uses and in fact the servants used to come here and it was also used for storage
After that what I mentioned happened centuries later when the Roman Empire had already fallen and this became part of the citizens of Croatia
It was used to hold garbage they used it as drains and here it got filled with garbage
And even just a few centuries ago when they cleaned it
What makes this basement special is that it is the only part of the entire fortified city that remains as it was built
Well obviously the lights weren't on but I mean the architecture and all the structures haven't been damaged
Just like the rest of the city which was destroyed in wars and everything has been rebuilt
Here are unique pieces such as this wood from 300 B C used in the construction of the basement
In fact excavations at this site did not begin until 1950 so it has remained quite well preserved
And actually there are leaks and mold on the walls
It's really cool
And the best thing is to be silent for there is no one and to listen to the dripping
It's funny because it says the eastern gate in the 18th century and this photo accompanies it
It's becoming hard to see the 18th century cameras in photos isn't it
Here I say goodbye to Split a city that has pleasantly surprised me I have really liked it
It's true that it doesn't have meaning that on a daily basis it looks very good because the main thing is the Diocletian Palace
Then the walk is also very nice but it doesn't take more than a day
I spent last night and this morning on it and it's already 10 o'clock and I've seen almost everything
So nothing else I highly recommend visiting Split if you're coming to Croatia it's worth it
These dates are also very good which is why no one is there
Then in summer I imagine it will get quite busy with cruises and such but the truth is I've been very comfortable
And we continue the journey so let's head to the next destination
Well I'm back at Fort Clis or Clis Castle which is where I came yesterday afternoon but it was already closed
Because it closed very early at 4:30 so nothing let's see if I have more luck now
No one is visible from the car I haven't seen anyone but anyway since there aren't many tourists it doesn't surprise me too much
So let's see if it's open
Well we're here in Clis the Fortress which is quite ruined meaning basically just the walls remain as you can see
But it's really cool because it's at the top of the mountain and the views are amazing plus yes the remaining ruins are very beautiful
El Fuerte de Clis is just 15 kilometers away north of Split so if you're coming to Split it's definitely worth visiting because it's amazing
And plus it's peaceful to go to Tubola even in summer I think not many people come as I've read there are about 15 000 visitors a year so it's really low
There are also tours available here that cover the area's Game of Thrones locations showing some of the scenes filmed here
Well documented there were two girls around and one was explaining and she was doing it quite well
Wow that's cool there's a small booth inside the castle with some pictures including one of Game of Thrones and a dragon
He is very fat
They caught me taking the hotel towels so here I am
I don't know if they'll let me go but anyway I'm saying goodbye now and if by luck they don't behead me then see you at the next destination Until now
