Many people will think of Taiwan the island located on the coast of mainland China
Taiwan and China share the same ethnicity the same culture the same history and the same language but there is a significant difference
Since 1949 China has been governed by the Chinese Communist Party
Although Taiwan now has a democracy this single difference makes these two places just over 160 km apart seem like two different worlds
There is no greater example of the difference than the example of practicing Falun Gong
Originating from traditional Chinese culture the practice of Falun Gong based on Buddhist principles has rapidly developed in both China and Taiwan
It was first introduced to the public in China in 1992
By 1999 100 million people were practicing it in China
Similarly in Taiwan Falun Gong can be found in most cities towns and villages throughout the island
In reality it's not hard to see Falun Gong practitioners exercising in parks every morning
Unfortunately in 1999 former Communist Party leader Jiang Zemin ordered the suppression of Falun Gong in China
But in Taiwan Falun Gong practitioners are free to cultivate
Furthermore they are recognized by the government and civil organizations for their ethical standards and contributions to Taiwanese society
Consider the following stories
In mainland China Mr Wang an engineer in Beijing was kidnapped by police right at his own home
He was illegally detained for six months before receiving a 16-year prison sentence
He volunteered his time to help organize Falun Gong practice sites in Beijing
In Taiwan Professor Zhang Shengxi from National Taiwan University received a congratulatory letter from the President of Taiwan
He was once welcomed by the Taipei market at a Falun Gong conference
Does he volunteer his time to help organize Falun Gong events in Taiwan
Today in China Falun Gong practitioners are kidnapped from their homes simply for practicing meditation
They were arrested while distributing leaflets or for posting information online They are frequently tortured and killed
Today in Taiwan there are hundreds of public parks and open spaces where people can come to learn Falun Gong for free
Many summer camps of Falun Gong are organized for elementary school teachers and primary schools
With the approval of the Taiwan Education Council in recent years introducing the principles of teacher training as part of continuing education
In China Falun Gong practitioners are imprisoned without trial
Many of them were sentenced to up to 18 years in prison and forced to work in forced labor camps
At the event in Taiwan the prison officials invited the Falun Gong practitioners as guests
They were invited to speak to the prisoners about a virtuous and moral life
We hope that the spirit of Falun Gong will help them change their lives
China and Taiwan are not always at opposite ends regarding Falun Gong
In China in the 1990s shortly after Master Li Hongzhi introduced Falun Gong to the public
Falun Gong was very popular and completely supported by China
Mr Li was invited to France by high-level government agencies and received due recognition
Falun Gong brings benefits health and happiness to the people of China
All of this has completely changed since 1999
The basic principles of Falun Gong are truthfulness compassion and tolerance
Only because the students wish to follow these principles in their daily lives
but was cruelly persecuted in China while being welcomed in Taiwan
This fact proves the difference between the Communist China and the Taiwan democracy
