Juan Pedro Esnaola
(Buenos Aires, 17 August 1808 - Buenos Aires, 8 July 1878)
Argentine pianist and composer. He was born in Buenos Aires where he studied with his uncle Jose Antonio Picazarri (1769-1843), chapel teacher in the Cathedral of Buenos Aires, priest and native of Segura (Spain). Thanks to him, Esnaola received piano musical instruction and religious music theory which played an important role of his future repertoire. In 1818, Picazarri traveled to Europe with his nephew. Mainly in Madrid and Paris, Esnaola improved his studies in piano, singing and composition. In 1822 they came back to Argentina where they founded a School of Music. There Esnaola became a teacher of singing and piano. During this decade he composed numerous religious music with orchestral accompaniment, mainly for the Church of San Ignacio where Picazarri was the chapel master. At the same time, he wrote a large number of songs and chamber music, especially for piano. From 1835 to 1838 he actively collaborated with the poet Esteban Echevarria (1805-1851). When Echevarria had to go into exile for political reasons, Esnaola continued his musical activity in Argentina. He made some approaches to politics joining to Manuelita Rosas (1817-1898) to whom he also dedicated some of his works. Years later and after the fall of the regime of Juan Manuel de Rosas (1793-1877), he joined the civil service where he worked until the day of his death in 1878. In spite of Esnaola notable accomplishments as a pianist and composer, nowadays he is mainly remembered as the arranger of the Argentine National Anthem, composed by Blas Parera (1776-1840) in 1813. #ClassicalMusic
