I went to the north of Sweden to try and find the perfect cabin in the wild for me to live in
and I found something just not exactly what I'd been looking for. The last video I posted was part
one of this cabin hunt series and in this video I'm going to share with you the final six properties
that I looked at. At the end of this video you're going to find out exactly where I ended up and
what I ended up buying. To reach cabin seven I walked through the forest. It was very remote,
it felt very wild and I really loved the highway leading up to it. Even though it was far away from
everything, the cabin itself was actually part of a small community and the other cabins were
a lot closer to the property than I thought they would be. It felt a little bit run down
and messy. Some of the other properties had a lot of things lying around. The land itself was really
lovely, lots of trees. It felt smaller than it was because on the other side of the fence you would
see your neighbor's building. The inside actually had everything that I would want. It had a huge
fireplace, a bedroom, a kitchen. It was actually a really good size but it felt like
walking into your grandparents' house and not in a good way. There was actually a lake but to reach
it you'd have to make friends with people that owned the property in front of you to actually
get there. So that didn't really sit right with me. It wasn't the property for me. After this cabin
I went further up north again and took some trains, took some buses and then walked for a
couple of hours to reach this little house on the back of this villagey area.
It was alongside a very quiet road so I didn't mind it being so close to something civilized.
I didn't mind it not being tucked away in the woods. It had a huge grassy front. It also
included some of the forest on the other side of the road which was a little bit useless because
you couldn't really do anything with it but it was nice to know that the plot was quite big.
There were a couple of extra buildings that were in a bad state but still very useful.
On the inside it was really nice. It was really well done. It was a really nice summer house,
ground floor and upper floor. It was a bit shabby chic but in a good way.
And all you needed to do really was probably insulate a bit more and add a heating cable
to your water pipe so it wouldn't freeze during winter. So it was definitely adaptable for winter
living. But I have to admit that the villages I walked through felt a little bit run down.
Biggest letdown was that again I could hear the road from the house. There was this constant
roaring of cars in the background and it was really loud even though the road wasn't even
that nearby. The next one however was amazing. I got lost on the way there. It was a true
cabin in the woods. Sadly though the plot next to it which was huge, the trees had just been cut
down. So I can only imagine what it would have looked like if the properties were still properly
in the woods. On the inside of the property it was really nice. It was small but it was perfect.
It was clean. There is no water connection. There is no bathroom. Obviously the water you
could get from the stream on your property. The plot was very interesting. It was very long and
narrow. There was a slope on the side of it so you couldn't really use all of it. And halfway
through the property there was a stream. As I walked towards the back I realized that this
stream was actually a huge river with a dam that took up half the plot and it was just insane.
It was roaring really loud. I started to imagine how you could build a bridge to the other side
of the river because there was this slither of land that was still yours and you could build
a greenhouse or a seating area and that would have just been amazing. There are so many things
that you could do. Unfortunately though the phone signal was really bad and the dirt roads that led
to the property was quite long and wouldn't be plowed from snow during winter. The areas next to
that road were also part of somebody else's plot who was basically using it as storage. So when I
walked back it looked really messy. There was lots of wood covered with tarps and I really didn't like
how that was being used. The nearby villages were also a little bit odd. The cavern itself was
amazing. It was very popular. People were bidding on it. There ended up being a bidding war and I'm
really not surprised about that. After this property there wasn't anything to look at. There
was a huge dip in the properties to view and I decided to go on a hike. I went down to Sundsvall
and decided to spend some time hiking St. Olavsleden. Unfortunately I wasn't in the right mood.
I just wanted a few houses. When the weather turned bad I really wasn't feeling it anymore and I decided
to change tactics. I had been completely disregarding anything that was in the south
because I didn't want to be too close to civilization, agriculture, people. I really
wanted that remote feeling of the wild but I wasn't actually finding it. So I decided to just
have a look at everything that I'd been ignoring. In the end I actually only found one house but
it was a good one. It really seemed to be tucked away in a wood and I bought myself an expensive
train ticket for the night train. Once I got down there I realized why. I didn't want to be
down south. It just looked so boring and I was laughing at myself for even just being there.
But I kept on going. I'd missed the viewing for this house so I called the estate agent and he
told me that I could just walk up and have a look. It took a couple of hours to get there
from the train station. I went down the small roads past these, you know, cute little houses
now and again and everything looked really well taken care of which I really liked.
And the forest was just gorgeous. I felt very comfortable. When I finally reached the house
it was off this side road and suddenly it kind of appeared and it was just on this grassy plot
and it was this perfectly cute, very typically Swedish house. I walked around it for a while,
just looking at the buildings. There was a guest house, there was a shed with a shower in the back.
The main house definitely needed some work. It was rotting away a little bit but
I realized that it was the most perfect house that I had seen. While it didn't have that wild
feeling that I had hoped for, it was on this perfectly nice plot that was away from other
things. The area seemed nice and I realized that I needed to bid on it. Unfortunately,
it took a few days for me to be able to actually go and see the inside and while I was waiting
people started bidding on it and it very quickly went up. Clearly it was quite a popular house.
When I went inside it was actually bigger than I thought it was going to be. There was a leak
from the roof that would need to be fixed. The one thing that scared me a little bit was
the water. The house had its own water pump in the garden and to make it windproof I would need
to bury the pipes and add a heating cable and make a new floor house with a water pump and
heat that. So that was very overwhelming but I just knew that I needed to start bidding on it
and when I finally did it felt really good. After viewing this property there was actually
one other house that was quite nearby. It was a 30 kilometer walk up north and
I spent the day walking up and found it next to the road. This completely overgrown property
and I really liked it. I don't know what happened but I went south and suddenly I liked all of the
properties. The road was very quiet so I didn't really mind it being right next to it. The sheds
were a bit terrifying and messy and I just felt like some old man that lived there for much too
long. The house on the inside had recently been I think renovated by a company but it was
done to a very low standard. You definitely would want to extend the property in some way because
it was very small. There was no water and no bathroom but I liked it and I kept it in the
back of my head in case the other property wasn't going to work out. Meanwhile it was midsummer
and everything closed down for a short while so I took a train up and I went back onto this trail
and I really loved this trail. There were so many huge rocks and boulders and moss
and the forest was just lovely. It was an amazing place to spend a couple of days.
While I was bidding on the other house I decided to go back up north and I went to
a little bit further up to look at this other house. I took a train and some buses and had
a really long walk next to this lake to get to this property that was on the side of a hill,
again sort of on the edge of a village. The roads leading to it was only going to go to
one other property so it was really quiet and again I really liked it. It was very old
and I was speaking to some of the other people that were looking at the property. They were
saying that it definitely was going to cost quite a bit of money to renovate it but there was just
something about it. It was very traditional. On the outside you could see that the old log cabin
was underneath the new red facades and I really liked that. There was a huge shed that was
absolutely falling apart and a little guest house in a garden that was very dank and cold
and a little bit horrible but I just liked it. The plot was quite big as well so I could
definitely imagine doing something with it. On the inside it had lots of nooks and crannies,
low ceilings but kind of in a nice way. But then something happened. I received this phone call
from the estate agent. As I was bidding I had been stuck in a little bit of a bidding war.
Me and one other person ended up bidding against each other and it was quite clear that the other
people were going to get the property. They clearly had money. I was very much reaching
my limits. So the estate agent called me and said okay so the other bidder has a new bid coming in
and it's higher than yours but don't worry because the seller has decided to sell it to you. I just
bought the house. Ten days after that I have keys. The next video is going to be a cabin tour
and after that I am going to take you along on my renovation projects. There are many. First I need
to winterize the property and you will witness me making lots of holes in the property and then
struggling to fill them up again. So see you in the next video.
