Maryland is known as both the Old Line State and the Free State, and sometimes it is even
called America in miniature. In part, this last nickname is due to the wide variety of
climates and natural features packed into the ninth smallest state in the country.
Maryland became the seventh state in the United States when it ratified the Constitution on
April 28, 1788. In 1791, Maryland donated land which is now the site of Washington,
D.C., the capital of the United States. Located on the border between Maryland and Virginia,
Washington, D.C. is not a part of any state, so that it cannot be controlled by any state.
During the War of 1812, the poet Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombing of Fort McHenry
by the British Navy. The events of this battle inspired him to write the lyrics to The Star
Spangled Banner, now the national anthem of the United States.
Here's a little bit more about Maryland. I hope you enjoyed learning about Maryland,
the Old Line State.
