It's a beautiful morning to Chad NBA and we're talking next-generation next wave of leaders of the NBA guys that are electrifying
It's amazing how things are shifting and they're dangerous every night I believe the game is in good hands
My style of play I'd say unpredictable
Deceptive
Precise
Think what gives me an edge is my belief in my training the mental strength I have
Joke it's finding Murray Murray. Does he got another one?
He's been a scoring machine. I don't even have words when I'm playing at a certain level hit him with the hesitation
I feel the team come together. I feel the team want to play hard not just for me but for each other
It's just really fun to watch and be a part of
From the beginning my dad was there
Watching my dad play. He taught me everything just really gave me the confidence to be successful the Denver Nuggets select
Jamal Murray
Jamal Murray grew up in Canada played a year for the Wildcats
Certainly no concern about his offensive game and ability to shoot. No, and this is who Denver was really targeting and really wanted
It's gonna feel it
First hit Jamal. You're cheating yourself. You open your eyes Jay. Make sure you close your eyes, man
Don't cheat yourself. Just feel it feel it when you start get good at that getting a good rim. I
Start to mess with his his balance a little bit
I'm sorry thinking a little bit
Part of it. It's supposed to be frustrated. I
Did martial arts growing up?
That was a different type of training and it required a different type of focus and a different type of energy
We used to watch
The Shaolin Temple and we talked about Bruce Lee and the energy that he brought to the sport of fighting just the mentality
Yeah, and you have to train you have to keep your reflexes so that when you want it, it's there
Some of the training we did
Push-ups in the snow when a winner ball handling on ice
We had a big maple tree at the front of the yard and the leaves would fall
He used to get really cold
And I would have to pick him up with no gloves
So I was just getting my hand strength used to dealing with the pain and having to push through it
Basically trick myself into just dealing with it. I have a high pain threshold and I've always had that growing up
So that mental kung fu really got me through a lot and really made me the player I am and the man I am today
Fast forward a bit to April 12th
2021
What happened that day?
April 12th, we're in Golden State
I'm down 7
And we got a little time left probably gonna try to get a bucket before
He gets out of hand. I'm just gonna make one last push
And I split the defense and I went together
You know once I stepped I didn't really do anything I just dropped
goodness, oh
No, Oh Jamal Murray is in massive pain
And it was really hot a really hot sensation
I'm kind of reading everybody's facial and emotions and all that I could tell it wasn't good
He's not just an important part to the Denver Nuggets. He's an important part to this league. I
Want to be and that will try to know I remember the energy I gave him and I don't want to take on the energy
They're gonna help him up and off. Yeah, he doesn't he doesn't want that chair
You can just tell like no one wanted to tell me like just flat-out. No one to tell me and
Then you know, they finally told me and
We think it's ACL
And Michael, um, you have an update on how Jamal is doing. Were you able to talk to him in the locker room?
Obviously a very down locker room
Yes, we lost a game, but I think everybody's thoughts are with Jamal and hoping that he's going to be okay
We begin today some very unfortunate news Jamal Murray
It is a torn ACL in his left knee and in fact, he will be out for the rest of the regular season
That's when everything was like starting to sink in and I'm such a fan of Jamal Murray
I mean, he's such an unsung hero in the game of basketball
He can flat-out ball the game of basketball is better when he's on the court
First five days were really painful. I was he couldn't do anything
And then about a week or two out. They wanted me to lift my leg
When you watch yourself and you can't lift your leg, you know, you have a lot of thoughts going through your head a
lot of doubts a
lot of people in your ear
So frustrating to to be in at the whole time, you know, I'm saying it's not like, you know
Oh, you see he's hurt and you see him do rehab. Okay, everybody goes home. I'm still hurt
I'm still have to get home still gotta get in my car. I still gotta get my stairs
I'm by myself
so you have all these doubts going through your head and
The process is so slow that it's just hard to see the light at the end the tunnel
They told me to take the little wins. I
That's when I felt like
moving somewhere
So I just start my journey back really the biggest question is what do you anticipate him getting from Jamal Murray?
I don't want to cheat the process. I
Started be able to lift heavier and more and more and gradually got better and better and even when I have my doubts
I still saw improvement
Five hundred thirty nine days since Jamal Murray played in an NBA game
There is sort of a player who remains a huge question mark in this and that is Jamal Murray of the Nuggets the
Organization has left it in his hands, but there's no reason that Jamal Murray shouldn't be able to get back when he tells them
He's ready. Then he's ready
Coming back. I didn't really know what to aim for. I was just so grateful to play and do what I love
Now I didn't really set any goals early and now that I'm back. It's like I have to find a new motivation
I don't want to just go out there and just play just be happy
First night. I came back. I was really happy
I was grateful to be out there just to put the uniform on hear the crowd again and my name introduced
it was just nice to find the flow and and
Feel like I'm part of the team again
Just trying to stay aggressive and not get discouraged if I miss I've having a bad streak
Just stick with it know that I was expecting this I was expecting to play on this a little bit I
Need to get those out the way so that I can you know, see the good days after I'll get
It's okay
I try to read them as much as I can and give them my time and give them my ears
Hey, hey appreciate it man, thank you. I love you appreciate it. Do you want to shoot? Yeah, let's see
Just seeing these kids
You know the smiles on their faces how excited they get you gotta kind of put yourself in their shoes
It's just cool to see them be themselves and let they joy out
Openly without having to you know, be too shy or be scared to say something or whatever it is
They just kind of be themselves and and show their true emotions
We had a blind group come in
When this kid, you know, obviously you couldn't see but got the ball in his hand and just chucks it up and it goes in
Shows you anybody can really do it
Obviously we do it at different levels, but it's still an accomplishment
I just want to inspire the next the next group that's coming in and show them that you know, I'm a human as well
I'm just just like you I've been hurt just like you as well and
You can come out of anything and make any goal for yourself as long as you put your mind to it and stay with the course
I
Think we can all have a legacy and you know greatest basketball player
Obviously everybody wants to be that but when you can be the reason that someone does what they does with a certain type of purpose
I think that goes a long way
I'm away to the arena. I meditate and
Put myself in the position that I want to be in in the game
Envisioned the game the energy. I want to bring the joy. I have using my moves try to see it up before it happens
Everybody's locked in when they walk in, you know, everybody got their headphones on and just be in your own space
I've gotten better with each game. It's a matter of going out there and carrying that same confidence not letting a injury take my mental away
from that
Scores again
When you want to move you are determined to move
Stories
Be formless shapeless
Like water water can flow or it can crash be water my friend
Even till now I still see improvement
But I'm not where I want to be yet
You know that now that I put the work in and I trust the work I've put in I'm starting to see the
the results of it
Next wave of guys in the NBA. I think they bring a lot of energy
They play to the crowd they're excited to watch
Feels good to be in that category. I've been playing against some of these guys for a while
My legacy out I'd want a kid to look up to me and to see that I'm flawed and that I've overcome that
And I didn't let that stop me. I
Used to watch Vince Carter a lot. He inspired me. I hope I can do that same for somebody else
Cameras rolling. Let's get it
