Over to sports now. The English Premier League has made a collective decision to withdraw
gambling sponsors from the match day kits of the 20 teams. This decision comes as the United Kingdom
aims to tighten its laws on betting. Eight of the 20 clubs in the league currently have betting
companies as short sponsors. The list includes Newcastle United, West Ham United, Everton,
Aston Villa had recently inked a deal for the next three seasons with a gambling firm. This does not
mean that gambling will disappear completely. Sleeve sponsorships still appear to be on the
table as well as advertisements on the pitch side sponsorship boats. Shirts carrying prominent logos
of betting or gambling companies have already been outlawed in Italy and Spain. The Premier
League released a statement and I'm quoting here, the clubs have collectively agreed to withdraw
gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs match day shirts becoming the first sports league in the
UK to take such a measure voluntarily in order to reduce gambling advertising. The Premier League
is also working with other sports on the development of a new code for responsible gambling sponsorship.
