Yeah. Watch the right hand side of your screen. Those are two gray whales off
the coast of California swimming north in their annual migration. Now look to
the left as two orcas track them and close in for a brazen and rare attack
on adult gray way.
It's like getting hit by a Ford F 3 50. Danny frank is the Monterey based whale
watching boat captain who shot the video with his drone late last month.
The animals, they have the great well surrounded and it's just trading off
shots on those animals as it's a lot of tonnage coming together. There's a lot
of biting, a lot of ramming. I haven't personally seen a video. Um, I like
this. Josh McInnis is a marine mammal scientist at UBC who studies these very
orcas. He says 17 were involved in this attack, including one female. He's
identified as a prolific big whale hunter. She's been for decades involved
in gray whale predations. But the astonishing thing about this attack is
that it was on adults. Orcas usually go after gray whale calves.
Eventually one of the grays was wounded, but they weren't helpless
fighting back with their massive and dangerous tail flukes and eventually
getting to shallow water where they had the advantage and the orcas retreated.
Obviously a polarizer. Some people are on team gray whale where they want the
gray whales to get away and some some people are team orca where they want to
see the orcas get a meal. Frank believes both of the gray survived and
his remarkable video gives scientists like McInnis more insight into the
techniques of planet Earth's biggest big game hunters. Paul johnson global
