The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is a tourist line that runs along Oregon's Pacific Ocean
coastline out of the town of Garibaldi. Beginning operations in 2003, the railroad travels over a
portion of the old Southern Pacific Railroad-Tillamook branch line that once connected the
town of Tillamook to Portland and the rest of the national rail network. In 2007, due to severe
winter storms, a significant portion of the line was washed out in the Salmonberry River Canyon,
ending freight rail service to Tillamook. However, the tourist railroad continues on
hauling thousands of passengers each year. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity
to visit the railroad in late 2018 and early 2019 to take part in two special photography events,
one organized by Larrow Productions and the other by Trains Magazine.
Both of these events featured the railroad's McLeod Railway number 25 as well as the privately
owned Polson Logging Company number 2. The 25 is a 262 Prairie wheel arrangement locomotive built
by ALCO in 1925 and the number 2 is a 282 Mikado built in 1912. Both locomotives pulled recreated
mixed freight and lumber trains along the water and through the forests of the beautiful Oregon
coast. Let's now watch these two locomotives as they pull their trains over the southern
pacific Tillamook branch.
