I'm Oscar. And I'm Dan.
And today we're in... Sri Lanka.
Country number 82.
Previously on Oscar and Dan.
Our driver asked us to buy him scotch.
Gotta get that sun protection.
This is better than Venice.
Nobody can tempt us, can you?
After a great night's sleep, we are heading onwards today.
We're driving even further south in the country
and then we're heading sort of north from there.
We'll show you exactly what we...
The day before, we'd met Samir,
who gave us a ride from the airport.
We ended up becoming friends
and decided to spend our entire week in Sri Lanka
with him taking us all around the country.
Pull up in the Sri Lanka.
What?
After spending a day around the old fort city of Galle,
it was time to drive down to Jala National Park,
where an unexpected adventure was awaiting us
before driving north into the mountain town of Ebba.
It's so freaking hot already.
And it's 8 a.m.
We never showed you yesterday,
but we can actually see the fort from the hotel.
It's just the most incredible view.
What a way to start the day with a coconut dal curry,
coconut roti, coconut sambal.
The amount of coconut in this diet.
I'm living for it.
How's Sri Lankan breakfast treating you?
The breakfast is the best part.
The dal is great, the coconut sambal,
coconut roti, everything is coconut.
And then I had a British side here.
The spices are just delicious.
Wanna travel with us?
We're doing a group trip to Morocco in April
and we would love for you guys to join us.
There's only a few days left to book.
So if you wanna come,
check out the link at the top of the description
and book before February 23rd, which is the deadline.
This will be our only group trip for a while.
So it could be now or never.
Let's see if we're gonna have better luck
this time with the ATM.
The ATM swallowed my debit card.
Okay, it worked this time.
No swallowed cards.
So our next stop is our guide Samir's girlfriend's house.
And the best part is they have four dogs.
Hi there.
Okay, we were like, will she attack?
No, she just wants to play.
Oh, she's sweet.
Oh wow, rooster.
So we're waiting for some coconuts.
We just learned that the mom Rottweiler,
she has caught four iguanas in the last week
that roam around the garden.
So she is a hunter.
Luckily, she's nice to us though,
because we were a bit nervous
when they let her out of the cage.
We were like, oh, okay.
Oh, you were nervous?
Yeah, I mean, I can imagine you were more, but yeah.
The house is in the most gorgeous natural setting
just surrounded by coconut trees.
Here's the coconut.
Fresh off the tree.
It's orange on the outside.
It looks like a different type of coconut
than we usually see.
Just drink like this?
Yeah.
Okay, calm down.
It's really good.
Insert coconuts by Kim Petras.
Oscar the coconut fanatic.
Yeah, and also the coconut meat.
It's dripping so much.
Yeah, I know.
So good.
Do you want some?
So on our way to our next stop,
we stopped in a grocery store.
This is a bigger one than yesterday.
So there should be more fun stuff to see.
I want to find Oreos,
but we're always curious about
what vegan milks do they have,
that kind of stuff.
Oreos don't really seem to be a thing here though.
There's a lot of tea though.
Just buy I'm More Rich ice cream.
It will make you more rich.
They should pay you for that.
They should.
Wow, literally a whole section for soya meat.
Look, all these different kinds,
different brands.
This is crazy.
I had no idea this would be such a big thing.
Crazy.
Yeah, that's great.
But where are the Oreos?
This might actually become the first country in the world
we've been to where they haven't had Oreos.
Economists talk about the Big Mac Index
and we talk about the Oreo Availability Index.
We're taking a break in our road trip to get some mango
if we can find some good stuff here.
It's mango season.
Yes.
But we're not going to show our faces
because then the price is going to be a lot higher.
We got one kilo for 130 rupees.
So about 60 cents.
Yeah.
Okay, we stopped by the side of the road again.
We got the mangoes.
Now we're getting coconuts
and this is a very fun,
small little market on the side of the street
with several vendors.
These are the type of places that are fun to see.
There's not exactly a shortage of coconuts in this country.
Every time I have a coconut now,
Look how they do it.
Okay.
Thank you.
They use this as a spoon.
Look at this.
Is it good?
It's really good.
It's not as hot here as it was in Galle, right?
I really hope this is the temperature the rest of the trip.
I'm praying.
Are they poisonous at all?
No, no, no.
People eat the iguana.
They eat the iguana?
Yes.
Check this out.
A cashew nut curry.
Some rice and we're waiting for one more dish.
This is a massive portion of rice,
even for two people.
The portions here are crazy.
I'm glad we only got two dishes and not three.
This is totally unrelated to where we are right now.
But yesterday when we were on the beach,
I had some thoughts.
In 2019, we were much more into like the whole digital nomad thing.
It was only towards the end of 2019
that we really decided that we wanted to start trying to visit every country
and not just stay in the same places that we usually would go to.
And to be honest,
I had no idea that Sri Lanka was such a digital nomad hub.
But yesterday where we were outside Galle,
it really felt like being in Bali or Chiang Mai.
I'm glad we finally made it here now in a very different way,
not really being traditional digital nomads anymore.
But now as full-time travelers trying to see as much of the world as possible.
Good meal.
Yeah, I'm satisfied.
Okay, after the lunch, it's finally time for our safari,
which is so exciting.
This is probably the first ever real safari we've ever done.
I'm looking forward to seeing how real it is.
I don't know if it's going to be like a Kenyan Tanzanian safari dream
or anything like that.
We'll see.
We approached this with a very open mind.
Got the safari car going.
We are heading for an adventure.
He said safari car to be fair,
but I didn't expect like a real safari car.
This is the first time we've ever been in one.
It's a fun ride as you can tell by my hair.
Getting our safari tickets.
I honestly didn't think our first safari ever would be in Sri Lanka,
but there you go.
See what's the price.
One person, yes?
For two people?
Yeah.
Okay.
8,700.
All right, so now...
Monkeys.
Oh my god.
Oh, hi.
So cute.
Okay, don't get too close maybe.
There's so many of them.
All right, it's time to enter.
This is definitely not what we were expecting for our first 48 hours in Sri Lanka.
Our first animal we're going to try to find is a leopard.
Wow.
Seven months old.
Guys, we have a seven-month-old baby elephant right here.
Wow.
The mom must be close, right?
Yes.
Swimming elephant.
It looks like a giant hippo.
I love how safaris usually feel like the biggest deal.
Like, I've saved so long for this.
Like, the kids have been waiting for years to go on a safari,
and today, like, the safaris felt so casual.
We didn't even know that we were doing it until a few hours.
Oh my god.
Oh, two bad boys.
We're getting to see so many different kinds of animals.
Crazy.
People are queuing up because there's a leopard in the tree.
It'll be our turn to see it soon, I hope.
There's like a literal circus of people trying to see this now.
We still don't see it.
Oh, there he is.
There.
You can barely see it.
Whoever the first person or first car was that spotted that,
I am impressed because that was true camouflage.
This may be our first real safari,
but we have actually snuggled, kind of, with a leopard in South Africa before,
not completely in the wild or anything, but...
That was an orphaned cub, so it was very different, obviously.
Yeah, but still, compared to this.
Thank you for taking us around Yala National Park today.
That night, we had to drive through wild elephant territory to get to our next stop,
and this is where one of the coolest and scariest moments of the whole trip occurred.
Oh, they're going in. Oh no.
You can't see anything?
Where is she?
Oh my god!
So close.
She almost came up to the car.
Can we go back? I don't know. Is it safe?
No, no. They are not safe. They are wild elephants.
Yeah, they're wild.
The time pause is not good.
That was crazy.
It's pretty hard to tell in the video,
but this huge elephant was no more than half a meter from the car coming right towards us.
The day after, we learned that an elephant had attacked a bus on this exact road the same night.
Oh my god. We're dead.
But we have finally arrived.
We have arrived in Ella, which is our next stop on the trip.
I don't know why it feels so brutal, but we've just really been in a car all day.
It feels like it's been so hectic,
and now especially this last stretch we thought was going to be like an hour and a half,
and it turned out to be probably more like three hours at night.
Yeah, I don't know. It just felt like it was never ending.
Good morning from Ella,
and we are, for breakfast, trying these mangoes that we bought on the roadside yesterday,
and they're so interesting because they don't look like any types of mangoes I've ever seen before.
They're completely orange.
They taste very different. I mean, they're good.
Maybe not my favorite type of mango ever, but still so, so good.
Oh my god, you guys. Ella is the place to be.
The temperature is so much nicer than down by the coast.
No, thank you. It's such a pleasant, beautiful day here.
Yeah, we're excited.
All right. This is called the Rainbow Cafe.
Should we eat in the this? Here.
Is this safe? Sitting literally on the edge.
Our breakfast is very Bali.
I mean, this is a very Bali type place.
I think we're doing adjustments. Chocolate, banana, peanut butter.
So Sri Lankan, right?
And sharing some very decadent chocolate pancakes.
This is not nutrition advice, guys.
Hi, I'm trying to get down the stairs. May I?
I guess. Thank you.
Look who's chilling on the stairs at the cafe.
I love this. Okay.
Honestly, this cafe was so much better than we expected.
It was actually really, really good. Rainbow Cafe.
Took us straight back to Ubud. Strongly recommend it.
Now we are heading to a waterfall. Here is Samir. We're ready to go.
We made it to Rawan Waterfall.
Rawana, Rawana.
And the nature here is just spectacular, right Oscar?
Yes, named after the King Rawana of Sri Lanka from 6,000 years ago.
It's a bit chaotic. How do we get back?
They really advise you not to go swimming in the waterfall
because apparently up till now about 40 people have died from slipping down the waterfall.
And when we were up there, two girls actually fell into the water.
We kind of proved the point of how slippery it is.
So if you come here, do not swim.
That evening, Dan was feeling a bit under the weather.
So I headed out with Samir for a sunset hike.
We were driving on this road earlier. Look at that. So windy.
And the day is off to a beautiful end here at the amazing Little Adams Peak.
The views are just incredible.
We did do quite a few other things throughout the day today,
but those will actually be part of the next video.
So stay tuned for that.
Just wanted to reflect on our first few days here in Sri Lanka.
It's been so serendipitously and spontaneously beautiful, Albert.
How everything came about.
We didn't really have a solid plan at all before this trip.
It's just meeting Samir and being able to go around the country with him
has just been such a blessing.
And we can't wait to show you guys what is coming up next here on our trip to Sri Lanka.
So until the next video, see you around.
Next time on Oscar and Dan.
What more could you ask for?
Definitely better than first class.
Definitely the highlight of our Sri Lankan trip so far.
