Well, the Pirates anxious to get started here
and put the bad game behind them from yesterday,
and Luis Ortiz will make his start here for the Bucs
against a very tough Texas Rangers team.
And Ortiz back into the wide again.
Here's the next one, and a swing and a ground ball to third.
Baseball in 2023, and Hayes on the first.
One out, just like that.
One out for Corey Seeger.
Swing and a miss, struck him out on a change-up.
How about that? Two outs.
Yeah, two nice change-ups in that at bat to Corey Seeger.
Nathaniel Lowe, he's hitting .279.
And he hits this one on the ground through a very small hole
on the left side of the infield.
Sneaks it through for a base hit.
Rangers have their first runner of the game.
And here's Garcia.
Bounce to the shortstop. Decides to go to first.
Good work from Luis Ortiz.
Twenty-eight-year-old from Orange Park, Florida.
Right outside of Jacksonville, Dane Dunning,
who's done great work in Jacob deGrom's absence.
Andrew McCutcheon leading off the Pirates' first inning.
Line drive, base hit, and a milestone single
for Andrew McCutcheon.
That's 1,500 in his career as a Pittsburgh Pirate.
That'll be an awful special baseball right there.
And now the fans just being notified on the scoreboard.
The milestone hit for McCutcheon,
and the bat and the ball will be authenticated.
What a career.
Two hits here already in the first table set
for the Pirates' cleanup man.
2-2 and a swing and a miss.
He does get the strikeout of Santana.
This is just a great pitch from Dane Dunning.
A slider, sharp, quick, and very late breaking.
2-2. Runner goes.
Throw down to second.
Now we got McCutcheon in a rundown between third and home,
and Simeon runs all the way in from second to tag him out,
and the inning is done.
A leadoff base runner for the Rangers
here in the top of the second.
That brings up Jonah Heim.
Here's the pitch.
Grounds it toward third.
Hayes playing way off the bag.
Dunning tags second and throws on to first for a double play.
The third baseman completes a 5-3 double play
at second to first.
And just so heads up.
Here's the pitch. Grounded toward Hayes again,
who is playing well off the line.
He'll throw him out, and that's the inning.
Just like that, Luis Ortiz humming right along.
And that's a leadoff double for Ke'Brien Hayes.
And now it'll be Tucapita Marcano.
He swings and grounds it to the right side
and able to advance the runner,
and the throw over to Dunning a little bit high,
and so Marcano does his job.
Man at third with one out.
Infield up on the edge of the grass for Connor Joe,
hitting it 262.
Here's the pitch.
Swing and a tapper back to the shortstop.
Seager is going to go on to first and get the out.
Hayes got a good break from third.
He scores on the bounce out, and the Pirates lead 1-0.
They've got a one-out base runner
as we swing back to the top of the order for Marcus Simeon.
Right-handed batter. Here's the 0-1.
Swing and a comebacker knocked down by Santana.
He picks it up and flings it on to first.
Santana saves him.
And they're going to come out and inspect Ortiz
to see if he's okay.
So Tavares at second with two outs.
Yeah, I'm guessing it hit him. He says he's fine.
That ball was hit extremely hard.
Just rubbing up the ball. I'm good. I'm good.
But that ball was hit hard,
and he shook that off better than most,
trying to relay signs to your hitter.
0-2 swing and a miss.
Struck him out on a high and away changeup.
Bottom of the third. Pirates come in a bad leading 1-0.
The second out of the inning.
Here's Sawinski in 0-2.
Strike three called over the inside corner.
A fastball gets Sawinski,
and it's a 1-2-3 inning for Dane Dunning.
Infield playing low to pull.
The outfield is shaded the other way.
Here's the 2-2 coming.
Swing and a foul tip struck him out.
Time brought the slider up just enough,
and low feels that way.
1-2.
The righty batting young in the pitch.
Swing and a miss. Struck him out.
Down and away. Slider got him.
Couple of strikeouts and a 1-2-3 inning for Luis Ortiz.
First and third. One out.
Well, Connor Joe has the Pirates RBI.
They lead 1-0.
3-2 pitch and a swing and a miss.
He'll get the strikeout. The throw to second won't be in time.
The strikeout, though, is the second out of the inning.
Here's the 1-2 pitch.
And a bouncer, second base.
Simeon is there on top of it, and that ends the inning.
It's a four-pitch inning for Luis Ortiz.
Fifty-one pitches through five scoreless.
And we'll go to the bottom half. 1-0 Pirates.
Reynolds will head to first base.
And it brings up the number three hitter,
Jack Cewinski, who comes home with another 3-2 pitch.
And it's hit high into the air, out into shallow right center.
Garcia and Tavares coming together.
And it's Laoti who makes the catch
to get Cewinski for the final out.
We've played five here in Pittsburgh.
Pirates won. Rangers nothing.
Leadoff man on and back to the top of the order
for Marcus Simeon.
And that one gets away.
That allows Tavares to go to second base.
So the Rangers have that tying run and scoring position.
Nobody out. Marcus hits one high in the air
to right center field.
Cewinski on the run in the deep alley
makes the catch just in front of the track.
Tavares tags from second. He gets to third.
And the Rangers now have the tying run 90 feet away
with just one out for Corey Seager.
One-two from Ortiz.
And that's in the air left field.
Reynolds again toward the line.
This time in fairground, he'll make the catch.
Tavares tags. He'll score.
And this game is tied on the Seager sacrifice fly.
One-to-one in the sixth inning.
Just one one-two-three inning for Dunning.
He's worked in and out of some trouble all night.
Bouncer to first. Lowe's got it.
A little bit off the line. He calls off Dunning.
Takes it to the bag himself.
A one is lifted high in the air to short center.
Simeon out.
Leone Tavares says, no, no, no, I got it.
There are two outs.
Another man on for the Pirates.
A two-out walk followed by the base hit.
And on Dunning's 97th pitch of the evening,
the Pirates collect another hit.
They have met at first and second with two outs.
Here comes Bruce Boche. So that may be it for Dunning.
There it is.
Boche signals. Josh Spors coming on
as Dunning's evening is over.
So Bay, first time he's faced Spors.
Spors said he kicks the pitch.
Swing and a miss. Breaking ball down and in.
Bay chases a pitch nowhere near the zone.
Spors comes in, does his job.
We go to the seventh. We're tied at one.
A six-pitch inning for Luis Ortiz.
He's thrown 67 pitches through seven innings.
And we'll stretch. It's tied at one.
And now the potential go-ahead run in scoring position
as that forces Reynolds out to second.
To a board. Now just a hit.
Boy, you'd love to see them get a run for Ortiz.
Carlos Santana, 0 for 2.
Ground ball into right field.
A base hit. Reynolds waved.
Here's the throw to the plate.
He's going to be out at the plate.
Oh, I don't know. I think he's in there.
I don't like that call.
That foot looked like it was on the front edge of the plate.
Pirates will challenge. Yeah.
I think that foot may have gotten to the bag
or to the plate before the tag.
He's got to be safe.
Yep, he's safe. Yeah.
I love the slide by Reynolds.
After review, the call on the field is overturned.
The runner is safe.
Bucs lead it 2-1,
much to the delight of Pirate fans.
Santana is at second, Hayes at first,
Sawinski at third for Tucapita Marcano.
And looking for another big hit here.
Give a little breathing room.
A hit there to center field.
D. Tavares is back to the track.
And a head slam!
Tucapita!
Take a picture!
Marcano clears the deck!
Oh, the big swing!
His first career Grand Slam
gives the Pirates a 6-1 lead.
1-Cupita, 2-Cupita, 3-Cupita, 4.
And there's no way you can deny it.
Man at third, 2-a-way.
Simeon 0-3 tonight.
His 11-game hitting streak in jeopardy.
And that one out into left field.
It's a base hit. Gets a run home.
Simeon with the single to center field.
Makes it a 6-2 ballgame.
And that hitting streak extends to 12 games.
And so that's gonna be it for Ortiz.
Listen to this crowd.
He deserves it.
7-2 against this lineup.
And he'll leave the mound with a 6-2 lead here in the eighth.
Rangers had their last chance now in this ninth inning,
trailing by four.
But they're gonna face a really good one in David Bednar,
a local kid from right here in Pittsburgh.
All-star last year, and he has been great.
And one out.
Josh Young, one for three.
Bednar's 1-1, and that one is hit hard.
Deep out to center field.
That's carrying well. It is gone!
Josh Young with his tenth home run of the year.
Josh turns around this fastball up in the strike zone,
and he just covers it and tomahawks it out
up there to center field.
And that makes things a whole lot more interesting
in this ninth inning.
It's 6-4.
3-2 on Jonaheim.
And the pitch swung on, hit high in the air.
Right field playable.
Connor Joe coming in.
And he's got his man, two outs.
So the Rangers are down to their final out,
and here's Robbie Grossman.
One-two pitch.
They went and raised the Jolly Roger.
Great bounce-back win for this Pirates team
against one of the very best teams in all of baseball.
And Luis Ortiz, his first Major League win.
Took a peat to Marcano, the big swing.
Turned out to be the difference.
