All right, so Grove making his return from the injured list today.
He's been out since late April with a groin issue.
And he gets another chance with Dustin May and Julio Rios both on the I.L.
Torres, the last couple weeks leading off, changing the lineup for the Yankees lately.
He scorches this one to Short and Miguel Rojas for the first down of the day.
So one gone in this first inning, and up comes Aaron Judge.
Driven the other way for Jason Heyward.
And the second out.
Here's Anthony Rizzo, a lefty batter with two away and nobody on.
On three and one, Rizzo pops this into the air into Short's center field.
Outman is underneath it, waving his arms, making the catch, and the inning is over.
Garrett Cole against this Dodgers lineup.
Yeah, good fastball-hitting team, good fastball pitcher in Garrett Cole.
He hasn't had great numbers against him in his career.
Betts last night, four for four and a walk and two home run.
He is popped back at the infield.
And Short's center field, Gleyber Torres, has it spotted for the first out.
Freddie Freeman saw his 20-game hitting streak come to an end last night.
Freddie Freeman lifts the first one that he sees into center field for Connor Falefa.
Two up and two down for Cole.
Two out, nobody on.
The Dodger catcher, Will Smith.
Swing and a miss, strike three.
Got him on a slider.
So an impressive first inning for Garrett Cole.
Three up, three down.
Josh Donaldson, who returned from the I.L. last night and hit two long home runs.
Swung on and missed, strike three.
His first strikeout of the ballgame.
Here's D.J. LeMahieu, number five hitter.
LeMahieu into left center field.
That is down for a base hit and overrun by Outman.
Outman runs it into extra bases.
LeMahieu will be on third.
Oh, you could see that coming.
Unfortunately, Outman couldn't see that coming.
This really isn't on Outman other than he could have stopped quicker.
So, an early RBI situation for the Yankees following LeMahieu's second triple of 2023.
Here's the lefty, Jake Bowers.
This ball's hammered by Bowers.
Way back to right and gone.
Jake Bowers, a long home run.
And it's two nothing, Yankees.
Bowers unloads on a two-run shot.
Now quarter of the way up the bleachers in right field.
Number four on the season.
Second strikeout of the inning for Michael Grove.
This buckles his knees and he gets three K's in the inning, but they're around.
And there's two out.
Jason Hayward steps in.
Hayward at .238.
Literal back foot.
And a two-out base runner for the Dodgers.
Their first one of the day on a hit-by-pitch.
David Peralta coming up.
Hayward leads from first.
Carves this one out.
Back of third.
LeMahieu racing out.
Bowers coming on.
It falls there and trickles away from the Yankees.
Hayward comes home.
And that's how the Dodgers get on the board.
And then this flare is the perfect triangle where all three come together
and neither one of them can pick up the ball.
And then once the ball bounces away, easy for him to score.
Michael Grove is doing a great job against the Yankees.
Mixing a match in speed and velocity and location.
Made one mistake.
That's the two runs that they've gotten so far.
But he has looked really sharp.
Fights this one off into left base.
It's a lead off the fourth.
He comes home with a 2-2.
Donaldson has his knees buckled.
Strike three.
Spinning him to death.
His sixth K on this 1-2.
Swings and misses.
Michael Grove with his seventh strikeout through three and two thirds.
This is the guy that got him, though.
Jake Bowers launched a two-run home run.
That's the difference in this game.
Drilled again.
Right center field.
Altman back.
Jake Bowers sticks it out again.
Jake Bowers with two two-run home runs here at Dodger Stadium.
Home run number five, and the Yankees are on top 4-1.
Oh, what a thought.
Altman coming up.
He took a call third strike in his first at-bat.
On three pitches, Cole sits down Altman.
One gone in his fifth.
Here's Rojas.
His 1-2 to Rojas is ripped to left on a line and down for a base hit.
In front of Bowers.
Now here's Mookie Betts.
0-2 today.
There goes Rojas.
Throw from Trevino.
In time with a tag from Torres.
Platinum Glove Award winner last year, Jose Trevino, cuts down Rojas.
Another 2-2 to Betts.
Got him to chase a breaking ball.
Garrett Cole threw five.
He's given up just one.
Shelby Miller out of the Dodger bullpen,
and in his first year in L.A., has been really good.
It'll deal with Aaron Judge as we start the sixth.
On a 1-1 from Shelby Miller.
Yanks one.
Down the line.
Towards the corner.
It's got it up.
Aaron Judge sneaks it over the wall to the left field corner.
His 19th home run.
Yankees are going yard here in Hollywood.
It's 5-1.
Bombers.
He loves taking advantage of right field at Yankee Stadium.
Takes advantage of left here in L.A.
A little surprising here, Johnny.
Garrett Cole leaves the game at 80 pitches.
Peralta, who is really, really good,
but as a left-hander coming in and giving him a total different look
than what Garrett Cole obviously did.
Peralta's first pitch.
Line drive.
Base hit into left field.
The leadoff single for Taylor.
Now Miguel Vargas is going to pinch hit for David Peralta.
On a 1-0 pitch.
Vargas pulls one down the line.
That's a fair ball.
Back-to-back successful pinch hits for the Dodgers.
Rolls around in the corner.
It keeps rolling around like a wet bar of soap.
Squirts away from Cabrera and turns into a triple for Vargas.
A 5-2 game as Taylor scores from first.
Thompson, 155.
Five home runs, 14 runs batted in.
On a 3-2.
He takes ball four.
All three pinch hitters reach against Peralta.
And you get the sense his day may be ending almost as it begins.
And, yep, here comes Aaron Boone.
So, in the blink of an eye,
Garrett Cole leaves earlier than anybody would have expected.
And the Dodgers get the tying run to the plate with nobody out in the seventh.
Rojas rips it up the middle base at center field.
And the bottom four in the Dodger lineup all reach to open this seventh inning.
It's a 5-3 game.
So, now it's Will Smith with two on and two out.
The 1-2 is taken for strike three.
And how about Michael King coming on and putting out the fire?
And the Dodgers now have the tying run at the plate with J.D. Martinez.
Crack down the line.
Back to the corner goes Judge.
It is caught by Aaron Judge.
It is so much more than just the home runs.
He is Superman.
I mean, that door's locked, by the way.
This is a big human being catching the ball and just blowing up the bullpen fence.
He's got a home run, and he's got a defensive play that you'll see on highlight videos for a long time.
Top of the ninth, two away, nobody on.
And the lefty, Victor Gonzalez, on the mound.
Cabrera, he's a switch hitter batting right-handed.
Two on to Cabrera.
He is off the left center field.
Back goes Martinez.
There's the first hit sent, and it's another home run.
It's the story for the Yankees in this series.
All six runs today, all ten runs in the two games off homers.
And the Yankees are in front 6-3.
Welcome back to the big club, Oswaldo.
Two out as Freeman merely has to get on base somehow.
That would then bring Will Smith a tying run to the plate.
Out of 2-1 from Clay Holmes.
He cracks his bat on a Florida short that's caught by Anthony Volpe.
And the Yankees have evened this series in a game apiece.
