(Bundesliga 2022/2023): Highlights Leipzig - Schalke

Schalke knew a final day defeated RB Leipzig would see them relegated for the second time in three seasons and that even a win might not be enough if other results went against them. Schalke were aggressive early on but left Leipzig too much space. In the 10th minute Dani Olmo got the better of Dani Latsa and Ralf Fehrmann could only push the ball to Konrad Leimer. A goal for the Austrian on his birthday he'd also scored in the win at Bayern. Nine minutes later Christopher Nkunku combined with Olmo and the Frenchman's composure and fancy footwork saw him lead Schalke a merry dance. His 15th league goal of the season underlined his qualities but Schalke are fighters and Marcin Kaminski rose highest to head home Rodrigo Salazar's corner. Schalke grabbing a lifeline on 28 minutes. 2-1 at the break Thomas Rice's Schalke weren't finished yet and on 49 minutes the visitors were gifted a leveller when Erjan Nilan played his team into trouble and Vili Orban hacked the ball into his own net. A remarkable goal that meant a royal blue resurrection was on the cards but the third goal wouldn't arrive for Schalke and they were hit with a sucker punch on 82 minutes as the effervescent Nkunku teed up sub Yusuf Poulsen. The Dane is a living Leipzig legend this was a bright moment for him in an injury hit campaign and Nkunku needed one more goal to be the league's joint top scorer and it arrived in stoppage time. A beautiful finish his 16th goal of the season saw him draw level with Werder Bremen's Niklas Fullkrug. So heartbreak once again for Schalke and the pain of relegation will sting for some time to come.
