Hello everyone and welcome back to my garden in Essex on the South East Coast of England. I’m around 30 miles west of the City of London and 30 miles east of the seaside town of Southend-on-Sea and I garden in what roughly equates to a Hardiness Zone 8, although that mainly relates to the mildness of our winters, rather than the heat of our summers.
Now we are heading towards the end of Spring and the start of Summer 2023 and today I am visiting the lovely Fenlands Nursery in North Ockendon to find some plants to fill a couple of gaps in my borders.
Initially I set out to try and find something tall and columnar with a yellow appearance, but ended up in a totally different direction and came home with a gorgeous CERVIS CANADENSIS ‘FOREST PANSY’ REDBUD which I am just delighted with, and I also found a plant in the ‘SAVE ME’ section which I hope to nurture and bring back to life and it’s a EREMOPHILA GLABRA, commonly known as the Emu Bush or Tar Bush (a complete bargain at £5!).

Hello there everyone, it's Jeanette here from Enthusiastic Gardener and
we're in June already and I can't believe how quickly
this year is flying by. Coming up to summer on the 21st of June, that's not
too far away, I went shopping yesterday, oh I want to
show you my rhododendrons which are just beginning to bloom.
How exciting is that? Unfortunately the hosta has been found
well and truly found by the slugs. I went shopping looking for
something tall and columnar to go in this gap here.
Also I took out a rather large shrub from this section here, it had to go
and I was looking for something to go in this rather large gap I have now
but as I say I came home from the garden centre with nothing
so I thought I'll go out again to a different one
today and I wanted to share something rather exciting
that's coming up very soon. For my upcoming birthday which is
normally in June, well it's it's always in June
but Richard said what do you want for your birthday and I
have the perfect solution so I want to tell you about that.
Richard said what do you want for your birthday,
a window box, can you make me a window box?
I said to him funnily enough he said yes so I jumped on it because you know if he
says yes you've got to, Richard is the type of
person who likes to think things over for a good 10 days before any
action is taken. I am the complete opposite, not saying
that's right or wrong but I am the complete opposite, I
think of something and it's got to be done now.
I thought he's going to make one, he's going to take him like
a week to source the materials, then a week
to make it and then a week to hang it up.
Well I want it now, so I've been on Amazon
I found the perfect perfect size, about that deep, sticks out
and it's going to be here within the next seven days,
a little bit of a wait but today after my dog walk I'm going to go to
Fenland's nursery and I might get the plants already ready
for the window box so that when it does arrive
we can take action immediately. We'll go to Fenland's for you
now and see if we can find some wonderful tall plants that probably
don't even exist. Okay here we are in the wonderful
Fenland's nursery, now I've got to be quite quick because there's so many
people here, the parking is a little, well I'm not so sure, I'm in a very
good spot so it's good because it will stop me
dithering but I think what I'll do, I'm just going to look in the distance
to see if I can see any tall yellow
structural columnar things, if I can see them in the distance then
they must be bright yellow and what I'm looking for
but there's so much here as you can see so much
beauty. I might have to turn my phone off as well
because I don't have that much charge, I can see some nice things
so it's difficult, very difficult but this is a lovely nursery and what I
like about this is because everything is already outside
you know that you can put it straight into your garden
and it will do well, no public access beyond
this point. Okay I think I'm going to have to turn my phone off
have a good look around because I need to be quick
but you can see so much to choose from, nothing is calling to me at the moment
I can see lots of yellow but nothing tall as
like I'm after apart from maybe aces, maybe in the background might go and
have a look at those to see what they are
lots of petunias, okay I'm gonna go around this way I think
lots and lots of bedding plants, two pounds
very lovely aces, how much are these? 275. Okay I'm going to switch off
because I'm getting a weird look, weirder than I normally get
well apparently there is no such thing as a tall
column now, we have gone in a completely different
direction it's a Circus canadensis forest pansy and I'm going to try and
learn that name so it's a red bud he likes the
sunshine or it likes dappled shade it will have beautiful as you can see
red leaves in the spring and then they turn to
yellow so we do get a bit of yellow and it's deciduous and I've seen lots of
other people on YouTube have these beautiful forest pans and red
and so now I have one here maybe kind of there let me stand back and
have a look oh yes didn't get anything
like I was hoping to get which is not surprising this one was in the
please save me section and it was five pounds it's called an
and it's also known as the emu bush or a tar
bush and it's not even native to this country it's from Australia
but it likes any ph soil and it's frost hardy and
very low maintenance sounds good to me I love
the color it's looking very very dry but I'll try and save it and it was
five pounds I couldn't resist and I think it would look perfect just
here around about here I'm going to put that
like that a lot and I love this my Cercis canadensis my little bit of red
and I found some pulmonary I had to move a few bits and pieces I've replanted all
those at the bottom a mixture of geranium
so I collected that up and I think that's beautiful and I've staked it
and I love the fact that we have the green
the red the blue the yellow that to me is pleasing
that's that border pretty much done apart from the gap
we'll find something for the gap I'm very happy with that
so thanks everyone for hanging out with me today a little bit of a mixture
but I'm so pleased with my new plants this is I think
beautiful and also my Cercis I'm delighted to have a red bud
at last now I've joined the red bud club I hope you're all having a very good
week I'm Jeanette I'm the enthusiastic gardener
take care everyone thanks for watching bye
