Hey everyone, this is Bethany Teal and today I'm here with my daughter Savannah
and welcome to our kitchen. I'm an art teacher, she's an art lover, and we're going to try
something we've never done before today. We are going to make some homemade candles
and we're going to do it using a brand called Ocons. I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly.
They shipped us this lovely set, really well packaged in this box here, and this kit has
everything that we're going to need to create a whole bunch of cute little candles. Now again,
we've never done this before so we're going to do it for the first time here with you
and just show you how it goes. Hopefully it goes well. Now also in this kit, which was the
aromatherapy gift set, they also sent four of these cute little gifts. These candles inside,
here I'll open one up for you, smell delicious and are crafted into these little treats.
Look at that. How cute. Good enough to eat, right? Now I'll be honest, when I
saw that this was an aromatherapy gift set for candle making, I thought I was going to be adding
oil to the candle wax to create these candles, so I was a little bit surprised that it came in the
form of already made candles, but oh well. Okay, let's look at what comes inside this DIY candle
making kit. Okay, it has a whole bunch of these adorable little tins that we'll be creating our
candles in. So these will make really lovely gifts. This could be great for kids to do for
sales. You know, if you want to get some kind of fundraiser going or for presents,
make a whole bunch of these and give them away as gifts. We've also got four bags of 100% soy
wax inside here, wicks, a whole bunch of them, more than we'll even be able to use.
And then we've got two of these that are going to hold the wick up on top of the tin.
And in addition, we have already unboxed these to make sure they were ready. We've got our
metal pitcher that we're going to put the candle wax in, and we've got a stir. And this is
important because, I mean, having never done this before, we didn't have these kinds of materials,
and I wouldn't want to put candle wax into one of my cooking pots because that would ruin it. So
this is going to go into some boiling water, onto my stove, and this will go into the pot
so that the wax never has to touch anything that food comes in contact with. All right,
so that's all the materials we have. Now, it did come with a little instruction paper too.
Thank you. These instructions are very basic. They come with a six-step process. I will say
that some of the directions are not really worded 100% correctly, but we can figure it out.
And I did forget to mention there's one more thing that came in the kit, and that is these
little stickers so that we can attach the wick onto the bottom of the tin. I never knew that's
how candles were begun, but now we know. Okay, so we're going to get started with this. We're
going to need to choose two tins. I'm going to pick one, and you're going to pick one.
So this is the one that I'm picking. I like this.
This one here she chose. Oh, I like that. Yes. So we need to start with step one. It says
tear the sticker, tear another side, stick the wick to the bottom of the tin.
Okay, I do one, you do one. Okay, so we will, oh oops, that one is your pick. This is my pick.
Okay, so we're going to take the sticker. I'm going to stick it to the bottom, putting it in the middle,
and then there is, this is another sticker on top here, so I'm going to take that top piece off.
See if I can do it once, and it's already stuck down. Oh good. Okay, we got it. All right.
Now, since that's nice and sticky, this should be easy. We're going to stick the
metal part of the wick onto that sticky part. So take our wick here. We're going to stick it on.
Like that. And the wick is nice and long. Obviously, these will be cut later. We don't
need to worry about that yet. All right, so that is set. You can set these aside.
Set yours down, and we're ready to begin with the heat. All right, so we're going to fill this up
with some hot water. So I'm going to turn my burner on, start getting that water heating up,
and let's see, 70 degrees Celsius. I did a little math here. I did a little conversion.
70 degrees Celsius is 158 degrees Fahrenheit. The thing is, how do I know when it gets,
when the wax gets to 158 degrees Fahrenheit? This didn't come with a thermometer.
Now, if I have a candy thermometer, I could use that. Well, what do you know? It's my lucky day.
Okay, so I could use this and just, you know, clean off the wax afterwards.
First, we'll just let the water boil, though. While the water is boiling,
we can get set up by taking our two wick holders, wick stands. So we're going to want to place it
so that the raised part is in the middle. We're going to put it through the center,
and this just should hang out there. It should just rest right on top.
So I'm just going to go ahead now and pour one full bag of wax into the little metal pitcher
that this came with, like so. All right, and let's take you all over to the stove now so
that you can see the action happening. We are ready to now put our wax into our pot,
and I'm just gonna stir this, I guess. We want to be careful, since these are going to all get
really hot, to make sure we have our hot pads ready. We have some paper towels ready over here
as well. So I had full intentions of checking the temperature, making sure it got up to the
right temperature, but honestly, it's liquid now, so I feel like we might as well just
pour it into the candles. What's the point of waiting and checking and dirtying the thermometer?
So here I can hold this up. I know it's a risk, but I'm a risk taker. Okay, so I'm gonna pour
this into mine. All right, so we want to make sure all fingers are out of the way
when doing this, and I'm not going to hold this up to the camera because
I know that this tin is going to get really hot too.
Pour this in, okay, and then Savannah, can I pour it into yours too?
Okay, we're gonna experiment some more now. We're gonna try putting in some aromatherapy oil. I'm
with enough wax to make two candles. We'll add in, I don't know, whatever's left in this
jar. I'm just gonna put this in here. I'm gonna let it get hot, and we're gonna make two more
candles. All right, so our next set of wax is ready, and our next two candle tins are ready.
It hasn't been very long. It's only been about 15 minutes, but the wax is already firming up here,
so I'm hopeful that if we take this off, it'll still be okay. It looks like it is. It looks like
the wick is still standing upright just after that short amount of time, which is really helpful,
but we're going to need that for one of the other ones. That's really helpful because once you have
all this stuff out, you don't want to have to clean it back up and then get it back out another
day. It's nice to make a whole bunch of candles at once, so I think now we are ready to be able to
create our final two candles, and since our wax is ready here, we're just letting it cool
a little bit, and then we're going to pour in some doTERRA Aromatherapy Oil, and we're just
going to see how this works and let it mix with the hot wax, but we want to let the hot wax cool
a little bit first. I think it's too hot right now. Just got to be completely liquid. All right,
let's see if we can take out this one too here. Yeah, so that was fine, so I'm really glad that
we gave this a go because this is going to be a lot more convenient for us to make more candles
now instead of coming back to it another day. All right, so Savannah, do you want to do the
honors of pouring in the oil? Yeah, just pour in a little bit. We'll stir it up. All right,
let's do half of it. I smell wild orange. Sure, let's just add the rest of it. Why not?
No, I'm not sure. I've never done this before. Yeah, add the rest of it.
Good point. Okay, good point. This seems good. Okay, just like before, I'm going to use my
mitts because this is going to be super hot. All right, I did stir it. Yes, now we know from the
other one that we just, oh, uh-oh, so something happened in this one. The sticker came off the
bottom. So now what are we going to do about that? I think what we're going to want to do
so let me show you what I mean. Yep, we're going to pour it back in.
Okay, so what happened was the sticker wasn't sticky enough and the wick came off of
the bottom of the tin. So we are going to need to, that was me, so this is very, very hot. This tin
is super hot because it has hot wax in it. So using my mitt, dump it back in. Did I?
Set it there. I think though we're, oh, this one moved too.
Oh, I wonder if the oil made it less sticky or if maybe the wax was just too hot.
Well, either way, we are going to try again. All right, so we're going to try this again.
We've got my sticker here. So I'm going to put this, I'm going to stick it really hard on,
extra, an extra push. And, right, actually, yeah, it's the middle part.
Okay, we're going to get a new fresh wick. Can you hand me one of those, Savannah?
Okay, I'm going to stick it on really hard so that hopefully it doesn't happen again.
Okay, I stuck it on good, putting my wick through. Okay, I should be, I should be set now.
Got yours ready too, Savannah? These are no longer super hot, so I'm just going to set
these aside. All right, go ahead and put yours, yeah, right there's perfect.
Yes, I'm going to stir this up once more. Let's just hope that it didn't work just because
it was too hot. If this happens again this time, then we'll know, yeah, then we'll know it's the
oil. Wish us luck. We're good.
Oh, it moved. Oh, man. Okay, well, this one's good. Well, we've got everything cleaned up,
and now we have four candles to show you. I think they turned out well. What do you think?
Want to hold them up? Yeah, in fact, let's go ahead and, well, they're not totally
hardened yet, but definitely, definitely enough that we can comfortably hold them.
People want to cut them so that we have about an inch of wick. I know I'm a little,
I'm a little nervous to cut them. There we go.
So, yeah, we do want the lid to be able to go on, but I want enough, oh, no, I'm going to go,
I'm going to leave it like this for now. I think if it's, if it's too soft, though,
Savannah, if the wax is too soft, you want to wait until later to cut it. Yeah, if the wax is
not too soft. And then we have the two that we added the oil to. These we are still waiting on.
They are a little bit softer, but they smell wonderful, so I think that that was a great
addition, just adding some drops of, you know, just regular aromatherapy oil and whatever scent
you like to the wax. That worked for us. But remember, we did have some issues with the
wick coming off, and we're not sure if that happened because the wax was too hot when we
poured it in or if it was because of the oil. And until we do it again, we aren't going to know.
But all in all, we're really happy with this kit, the DIY candle making kit that we got.
Again, this is from Okans. That's how it is written. And it included everything we needed.
So we were able to make four candles within an hour of time, and we still have four more that
we can make later. Thanks for joining us on this candle making journey today, and we hope that we
inspired you to get out there and make some candles. It's a great way to spend a super hot
summer day, am I right? Bye!
