Royal Pool in Angeles National Forest is a legendary, secluded swimming hole buried in a beautiful, deep granite gorge in the San Gabriel Mountains. Most hiking directions to get to it are outdated, referencing trails and campgrounds that no longer exist. I made the trek out here once before, arriving at Royal Pool in complete darkness. I decided to return with plenty of time to not only enjoy the pool in the daylight, but also make at least most of the difficult boulder hopping, bushwhack out with some daylight as well.

Just keeping an eye out for some bears. Royal Pool!
Today I'm revisiting one of the most popular spots that I've made a video about here in Angeles
National Forest. Royal Pool. So not really going to cover too much in the way of directions
on how to get there. You can see my original searching for royal pool video for that.
But today just focused on getting there in the daylight to enjoy this pristine paradise here
in the San Gabriel Mountains right past Switzer Falls and give you an accurate measurement on
the mileage. But it's about one o'clock in the afternoon now so sunsets at 7 50. So trying to
get there with plenty of daylight to enjoy the icy cool refreshing waters of Royal Pool.
Well up here on the ridge above Switzer Falls definitely sounds like the falls is flowing
nicely. Sounds like some good flow down there. But we're going to keep going along this ridge
drop down into the canyon instead of going back up the creek we're going to go to Royal Pool.
We're making good time today. Looks like good flow so I'm excited for that.
The only thing I wasn't banking on is that there might be a ton of silt and stuff
in Royal Pool which it's big enough so it shouldn't totally fill it in but you never know.
I already fell like pretty much all the way in so at this point
doesn't really matter if I get wet. The water's cold but it feels good.
Definitely see the presence of some bears in this area where this grass is kind of trampled.
I don't know if you ever saw my searching for hidden water tunnels in San Bernardino when me
and Robert went out there we saw the same thing and then he went back a few weeks later put a
trail cam there and that trampled grass area was where a mother bear would lay down on her back and
her two cubs would nurse from her. So definitely bears in this area and most likely that's what
caused this grass to be trampled in this area. Mother rolling around on her back nursing her
young so just keeping an eye out for some bears.
So we've been going for almost three hours now and I think we got hopefully a little bit less
than an hour to go. We started at 1 30 and it's about 4 15. I'm hoping we get there by 5 because
that gives us some time to splash around enjoy Royal Pool and then start heading back before
it gets pitch black. I mean I don't mind doing the last little bit on the trail in the dark but
definitely water whacking bushwhacking boulder hopping and doing this type of stuff
in the dark is not that fun. Last time I did it was much lower flow so when you're knee deep
waist deep wading through slippery slick rock in the in the dark it's not that fun you bust
your ass a lot. Take it from me I know about busting ass. We made it Royal Pool three hours
and 15 minutes from Switzer Picnic Area parking lot. Looks super deep so in case you're curious
it was four and a half miles from the car four and a half miles from the car at Switzer Picnic
Area parking lot the Royal Pool coming down from Switzer Falls from the top. So I brought a pretty
long rope anchored to that rock back there. I think it's 60 feet might be 80 I can't remember.
I never use this rope because it's not hydrophobic but definitely you don't want to do any exposed
climbing like you would have to over there and my wife had no problem climbing up. There's little
ledges and steps here. This is an awesome slide luckily it's deep enough. I did throw my rope so
hopefully the end of it doesn't smack me in the face but we're gonna find out what happens.
Yes wow three hours 15 minutes four and a half miles to one of Angeles National Forest's
best swimming holes Royal Pool. This spot is primo excellent Royal Pool the slide is awesome
you could do like a baby jump there if there wasn't so much silt in it and it was a little
deeper you could might have some nice jumps here but it's all about the adventure even if we didn't
make it here it's all about the journey not the destination. I'm looking forward to hiking out in
the daylight this time that's cool what a bonus that's two adventures in a row that I had previously
done the way out in the dark Newton Canyon Falls my last video and this one that I'm actually making
it out before dark. Guys that's progress I don't know if I'm getting less infamous in my old age
or not either way I hope you subscribe I hope you stay tuned for more videos get out there
find your adventure and be infamous infamous
