Hello, Jiang Lan
Hello, I'm glad to have this opportunity
Let's have a chat
So, let's
start by your background and experiences
Where are you from?
I am from Jiangxi
I was born during the three-year famine
Let's talk about my growth experience
Last night,
I watched a movie called "Dream of an Actor "
It really made me think deeply
Because I have experienced some of the scenes in it
During the Cultural Revolution
when those Red Guards
were fighting against intellectuals
I thought of my father
Because my father, during the Cultural Revolution
and before the Cultural Revolution, he was a school principal
But when the Cultural Revolution began
around 1968
by that time, I was already in school
probably in the second or third grade
At that time, my father
was labeled as this......
He was publicly denounced and paraded through the streets
because he used to be a translator for Soviet experts
During the Cultural Revolution
You know the relationship between the Chinese Communist Party
and the Soviet Union became very strained
Oh, when I saw my father
I really couldn't lift my head
You know what I felt at that time?
People around were shouting and screaming
"Down with this person, down with that person "
I would lower my head, I didn't dare to look
I saw my father wearing a tall hat
you know, at that time,
they used newspaper to make those tall hats
Very tall, worn on the head
And he had a big sign hanging on him, saying "Counterrevolutionary"
I didn't understand the meaning
But you know,
I knew that my father was a bad person
because I saw him being criticized when I was a child
It planted something in my heart
Actually, at that time, I really hated my father
Everyone found it unbelievable
Because why?
I just felt that
if you oppose Chairman Mao, if you oppose the country
then you are a bad person, right?
That's how I perceived it
So, in my impression, "Sailing across the sea relies on the helmsman
the growth of all things depends on the sun"
We used to sing these songs every day
After the Cultural Revolution, after my father was criticized
and sent to the cowshed
because we didn't live together for a long time
so I didn't call him my father
For a long, long time, I didn't call or speak to him
Just
"Hey," like that
Originally, I was supposed to be
a very good person
a girl of that kind
But at home
I had this kind of attitude towards my father
So I wondered where this came from
It's because
since you were young, you grew up in this kind of environment
Unconsciously, you will feel
wow, if I'm with him, I feel
he's a bad person
I said that when I saw him being criticized, I felt ashamed
I felt unable to lift my head Wow, your head
I just wanted to lower it, to bury it
If there was a hole to crawl into, it would be great
Don't look
Later, my father was sent to labor reeducation
He was locked up in the cowshed
During this period
Actually, many, many things happened
Although I was very young, I experienced a lot
I have vivid memories of the Cultural Revolution
Then, in 1966
at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution
our family participated in the building of a hydropower station
in a fairly small place
Everyone knew each other there
It was a unit, working together
Divided into various teams, construction teams, and so on
This team, that team
The place we lived in at the time
was a temporary structure
a bit like a work shed, very rudimentary
But I remember three families living together
Our family was in the middle
and next to us was another family
They were the secretary of the General Team, the party secretary
The family on our left was a team leader,
the team leader of the General Team
One day
although we didn't go to school much at that time
we still went to school
When I came back, I saw that
Oh no, I often receive phone calls, it's really annoying
Let's continue
Yes, these two families
One of them was the team leader
These two people had some friction at work
And during the Cultural Revolution
during the period of ideological struggle
one was a rebel faction, the other was a royalist faction
I don't know if you understand
I heard about it when I was young
Even in my own family, because my older brother was a Red Guard,
he belonged to the rebel faction
And my father belonged to the royalist faction
So that was the situation at that time
One day, after school,
when I came back, I saw
a crowd gathered in front of the so-called royalist's house
At that moment, I was wondering
what had happened
Later on,
I saw someone being carried out from inside
It was the royalist
He lived to the right of my house
He climbed onto the roof of my house
He used boxes from his house to stack up
and climb onto the roof
He climbed from my house
to the roof, which was relatively rudimentary
He used boxes from his house to stack up
He could climb up to the roof directly
He passed through my house
and went to another house to hang himself
After he was carried out, ah,
his tongue was sticking out very long
Oh, I was very scared at that time
I was probably seven years old at that time, I think
He hanged himself at someone else's house?
Not at his own house he died at someone else's house
Yes, because why
Let me ask
There were people in the other house
How could he have entered someone else's house?
During the day, no one was home
There was no one in our house either
One was a rebel faction, the other was a royalist faction
These two people were working in the same place
One was a secretary, the other was a team leader
They had conflicts, you see
The royalist felt
that this day was extremely difficult for him, right?
He was going to be criticized, or something like that
So he couldn't understand, you know
He couldn't understand
Because he thought that the team leader was plotting against him
That's how it was Because I was very young at that time
I'm not very clear about the details of this incident
Later on, I heard adults say that
he simply chose to die at that person's house
This was the first time I saw a dead person
After that, things became even more chaotic
It was around 1968
I had an older brother who was two years older than me
I remember one of his classmates very clearly
I even remember her name, Wu Cuiying
She was a girl
She had two younger brothers,
twins, both good kids
Her father was an industrial worker, or the Leading Brother at that time
That was remarkable, you know
That was highly respected, you know
So he was very prestigious back then
I remember
in our small town
there were many temples
At that time, people were very devout
They would go to temples and pray, and so on
This worker was a member of the Workers Propaganda Team, and later
wow, they started smashing temples
My brother's classmate's father
was the most active He went to smash
and after smashing the Buddha statue in the temple
he also broke off the statue's legs
Then he carried it and ran away
He ran outside and threw it away, just like that
After that, not long after
This classmate of my brother's
she was only two years older than me
was probably not even 10 years old
she got a heart disease
Her two younger brothers, they were so healthy,
but they both became paralyzed
I witnessed all of this
I couldn't understand at all I asked what happened
Of course, now I know it was because of the temple smashing
It was really a serious crime
After her father destroyed the Buddha statue
their family started to deteriorate
Later, he couldn't bear it anymore and went insane
His father
how did he die later?
At that time, we were working at a construction site
building a power plant
There were all kinds of tools there
There were those kind of rivets
long and big nails
Thick rivets like that
They weren't our daily nails
He took a rivet and hammered it into his own head
He smashed it with a hammer like that
Oh, it was terrifying
According to what my brother told me
that's how her father was killed, using a nail to smash himself
Actually, my brother is much older than me
He is about 12 years older than me, like that
At that time, he was already a high school student
And then he joined the Great Networking of the Red Guards
At that time, they took the train to Beijing
Wow, they went to Beijing
And everyone shouted loudly with Chairman Mao's quotations
When they went, everything was free, accommodation and food
It seems they took the train
He seemed to have climbed onto the luggage rack for sleeping, just like that
After coming back, our family became something else
He and other Red Guards
came to our house to ransack it together
Ransack the house
We were poor at that time
To tell the truth
we couldn't even eat enough every day
Actually, at that time, I felt it was really tough
No decent beds, nothing like the beds we have now
Just wooden boards, boards pieced together
After the rice was harvested,
after the straw dried,
it was spread on those wooden boards
Then another layer of cotton padding
I know that cotton padding was all old
I don't know how many years it had been there
Wow, they lifted off all that cotton padding
and the straw, to look at it
On the walls
because it was a temporary kind of
shed
so they were all pasted with newspapers
They even open them up
To see if there are any hidden treasures of gold and silver behind them
How could there be gold and silver treasures at that time?
As for my father
because he used to follow Soviet person
so he went to some places
He went to Xinjiang and other places quite a lot
He went to Beijing and many other places
My name
has "Lan" in it because I was born in Lanzhou
But I am from Jiang-Xi
My mother was there in the north, and she found the climate uncomfortable
She would have nosebleeds there
And it was very cold
So she requested to come back
When we were in the north
we actually worked on
thermal power engineering
After returning to Jiangxi, we switched to hydropower, like that
Around the 1970s
we moved to another hydropower construction site
The first one
Actually, it was on the side of Jing-gang Mountains
Perhaps you all know about San-wan
My older brother was sent back to that area
In San-wan, the place where Mao Zedong established a base
After the hydropower station was completed
we would went to another hydropower station
When we arrived there
the family next to ours
One day
when I came back from outside,
the man in their family
disappeared
He disappeared Everyone has been searching, continuously searching
Because at that time,
that man, well,
he always seemed
silent, keeping his head down
We kids didn't pay much attention to it
After a few days, he went missing
After his disappearance
suddenly one day
I came back and saw
him being found in the river, pulled out
His whole body was soaked, that body
Wow, when I saw it
I mentioned earlier that when I was that young
I had seen
a person who had hanged himself at someone else's place
And now, this was my neighbor next door
Jumped into the river to commit suicide
At that time, there were various ways of dying
Let me tell you about the Cultural Revolution
This person who died, who lived next door to our family
let me tell you something about
his son
He was classmates with my older brother of me
I have three older brothers
He was actually just two years older than me
He was one grade ahead of me, actually
At that time, you know
every household had
those Mao Zedong
clay sculptures
made of plaster
Didn't every household have them, placed there?
And then maybe one day, it accidentally got broken
After it broke, it was very scary and frightening, you know
It broke It was a big deal
He probably wrapped it in newspaper
I don't know how, but his classmates found out
His classmates
they were probably in the fourth grade at that time
But at that time
wow, they criticized and denounced him
I remember his name very clearly, Zhou Yi
He knelt down there, knelt down
I don't know if you experienced something like that when you were young
Above our classroom blackboard
There's a portrait of Chairman Mao
Right? Yes, and
There's also
There's also
"Study Hard and Make Progress Every Day" on both sides
And then Mao Zedong's portrait is in the middle, right?
He was made to kneel in the front
Kneeling in the front and self-criticizing to the whole class
And then he kneeled
For such a young child, they come over and kick him:
Your butt facing our great leader!
That's not acceptable, right?
Because he has to kneel facing the whole class, he definitely
back will be facing the portrait
The other way around, that won't work too
If you face this side of the portrait
your butt will be facing the whole class
Wow, it's just back and forth
A child so small, yet like this
So at that time, it was really like people had gone crazy
So I experienced a lot
yesterday I watched this
movie "Dream of the Red Chamber," it had such a scene
I was really touched
I was deeply moved when I watched it
For us, we experienced it firsthand at that time
I started elementary school in '66
And then, in '76, I graduated from high school
For ten years, I was
amidst the turmoil
At that time, during the Cultural Revolution
they said we didn't learn anything for ten years
We had to learn from the industrial workers, farmers and soldiers
Right? At that time, the Workers Propaganda Teams came to the schools
and the teachers didn't have to teach anymore
No need for education; they were all "the stinking old ninth"
So, after the ten years were over
we, this generation
Would go to rural areas, go up the mountains, go to the countryside
I did too
We all had to go down
At that time, for one family, maybe they would keep one child aside
My second eldest brother was chosen to
stay in the city, he stayed behind
In '76, after I graduated, I went to the countryside
Going to the countryside, at that time,
Oh, there was really a sense of enthusiasm
And we felt like, "Hey,
it's pretty good"
Receiving re-education from poor and lower-middle-class peasants, right?
To make great contributions in the vast world
The impression at that time was
when standing up
you would see stars
We couldn't even eat enough
I remember at that time, it seemed like once a month
we would have meat
Oh, the savory aroma of that meat!
But with so many people, you can imagine
really
we could have meat once a month
What did we usually eat?
Let me tell you, it was in the rice
they gave you a piece of fermented tofu
When they served you a bowl of rice
they would add you a piece of fermented tofu
That was basically it
Just like that
Oh
I felt like I became as skinny as a pole back then
I remember the Educated Youth at that time
were slightly older than me
Because among my cohort, I was the youngest
I started school early because my father was a principal
So I started school around the age of 6
Others usually started at 7 or 8 years old
At that time, we had to plant rice
After going to the countryside
We were 17 or 18-year-old kids
16 or 17 years old
When we arrived there
one person would cultivate several plots of land
I remember at that time
when we were transplanting seedlings in the rice paddies
there were leeches
we didn't know about leeches, and we didn't understand
They crawled up from under our feet
They kept crawling, and many leeches crawled onto our backs
Oh, it was frightening
Those leeches would suck blood
Oh, if you wanted to get rid of a leech, you had to smack it hard
You had to smack it For example, if it was on your leg, you had to hit it hard
Then it would come out
Oh, sometimes, the leech wouldn't come out
It would forcefully burrow inside, you know
It was really scary
we were just teenagers then
Oh, really
Let me tell you,
It was all caused by Mao Zedong
Those young people really suffered a lot
And people really became worse
In fact, the peasants at that time didn't welcome us
Why?
Well, peasants only had a small piece of land, you know
When we arrived, it was like we were taking it away from them
We were sharing the little rice they had with us
And besides
especially the boys
you see, 16 or 17 years old, right? It's when they are growing
Their energy was incredibly high
but they couldn't eat enough
So they would steal chickens
steal this and that
Of course
they would catch frogs in the fields
basically anything they could eat
Those peasants' chicken eggs, anything would be in short supply
As long as the peasants had something
whether it was ducks or geese
they would steal whatever they could
The place I'm living now is very close to Stanford University
When I was at Stanford, I met someone
who had extensive research on China's issues
He focused on the Cultural Revolution, especially the generation of Educated Youth sent to rural areas
So I asked him, what specific aspect are you researching?
He said, "I have encountered Educated Youth and understand them well,
and they all have a look of desolation"
That is to say, they were tormented to the point of being unrecognizable
I said, "I am also an Educated Youth"
I'm just from a later group,
not like those truly older Educated Youth
who were sent down in the 1960s, you know
"If we talk about 1967, 1968
the Cultural Revolution started in 1966, and in 1967, they began to send down that group of people
They suffered even more hardships
He knows a lot about China's history during the Cultural Revolution,
especially the period of going to the countryside
He asked me about those things
and I told him they were completely true
He knows a lot
He asked me about those things
and I told him they were completely true
I said, at that time, people had no other options
If a girl couldn't bear it
she would just obey someone
like the leader of the production team, right?
Some would get married to the locals
It was really too difficult
About the one who was raped, he knows everything
I'm telling you, it did happen
But it wasn't a complete rape
If you give her some benefits
she can be easily satisfied
So that's it, right?
What did the girl look like?
I just mentioned that leech
You come from the ground
from the paddy fields
That's just planting rice
And when it's time to harvest, you have to cut it
After cutting, you have to bind the rice
into sheaves
Then you have to carry it back
to the threshing ground
All under this scorching sun, in the past, there were no
hats, sunscreen It was impossible, just like that
Carrying loads, those girls sitting by the roadside in the fields
sitting there, crying loudly
Girls were crying loudly
Just imagine at that time
If she got her period, at that time
I remember when I got my period back then, you know?
The blood had already flowed out
I was so tired, I didn't even realize it was flowing out like that
You're in the water, mixing with the water
So, these kinds of things happened a lot
Later, our bodies were ruined
They didn't care about you
Whether you had your period or not, everyone had to work
When it was time to work, you had to work
And besides that, you had to eat, right?
We were in a Youth Village, right?
You had to cook
You had to cook and make rice
And every month, you had to offer a certain amount of firewood
Firewood for cooking and heating
You had to go out and chop firewood
The more you chopped, the farther you had to go
After chopping firewood, you had to tie it up
dnd carry it back
All bundled up, it was unbearable
Oh, you really endured a lot of hardship
How many years? How many years did you stay there?
Actually, I stayed there for the shortest time
Because by 1978, they had restored the college entrance examination (gaokao)
Our group of people
they say we were the "ruined" group
Unlike those who started studying later
when Deng Xiaoping came into power
later on
the schools actually started teaching something, right?
Those who were ahead of us
they also learned something before the Cultural Revolution
But for our group, we started school in 1966 and continued until 1976
So the college entrance examination was chaotic
For the college entrance examination, everyone went
I remember the group of people who went to the countryside with us
probably about three classes, over 120 people
Maybe about half of them
about half of them applied
None of them, not a single one passed
It was impossible At that time
in 1977
immediately after the restoration of the college entrance examination
there was no time to prepare or anything
In 1978, during the college entrance examination
very few people went to take the exam
Probably only three people took it at that time
Only three people took the exam, and one of them was from a secondary vocational school
Then there was me and another person
The other person's parents were also teachers
So the two of us passed the exam
So I stayed in the countryside for two years
What major did you study at that time?
I did not anything
I was thinking about what to do
You couldn't just stay in the countryside
So what was relatively easier?
At that time, in our family
only my second older brother
stayed in the city
As for the other three, my older brother, younger brother, and me,
we were actually in the countryside
In the countryside, it was impossible to pass the exam
We had no network connections
There were some people,
like those who were officials, etc
who sent their sons to join the army
At that time, I really wanted to join the army
I thought the green military uniform looked so great
If only I could join the army
But for people like us
the "Black Five Categories" [reference to social class],
it was impossible at that time
Later on, there were actually the "Workers, Peasants, Soldiers" university students
they got recommended, if you have heard of the "recommendation" system
For those whose families displayed strong beliefs and revolutionary spirit
such as the families of workers, farmers, and soldiers and the like
When it came to the college entrance exam, we started to worry
So what do you do when you're worried?
You haven't learned anything
My father said, "Then you should take the English exam"
Oh my goodness
I said, "People like us,
we don't even understand a single English word, not even a letter"
But there was no other choice I was forced to learn
But my older brother, because he belonged to the "Three Grades" before Culture Revolution
those people were really impressive
They understood everything about math and science
Because he was from the Three Grades, he had actually studied things, you know
He was a high school student in 1968
He started teaching me math and science, bit by bit
And then
As for essay writing, oh boy, I really didn't know anything
After the 1977 college entrance exam
there was only about half a year until the 1978 exam
The gap between them was very short
At that time, I still couldn't do it I had to stay in the countryside
Just like that
I applied for an English major
And I actually got accepted
You have such a rich life experience
Since I was little
from the beginning when I started to understand things, it has been like this
After you got into college
did life go through a tremendous change?
Yes, of course After I started college, things got better
There were no more problems in life, right?
And then, well
after graduating, I actually stayed at the college to teach
But the Cultural Revolution had already passed
There was no longer the kind of hardship we experienced back then
I want to ask you a question, though
You mentioned earlier about your father
being treated unfairly at that time
At that time, you didn't understand your father very well
Did your relationship with your father improve later on?
My father was a
scholarly type of person
He would lock himself in his room and read books
He loved reading
In his later years, I saw him reading various
thick books,
those books about health preservation
He was alone
and he didn't really like
going out
or visiting others
So I had always maintained a distant relationship with him
Of course, later on, I felt
quite guilty
Oh, I thought to myself, for so many years, I've only
focused on myself, as if the elderly at home
didn't deserve any of my responsibility
After my father passed away
last year my mother also passed away
During that time, I felt very down
How did you start practicing Falun Gong? What led you to it?
When I was in mainland China, I actually learned the practice
I practiced Falun Gong
Before I went abroad, it was in 1998 At that time, I was in Guangdong
I stayed in schoolcollege for about
ten years, until around 1992
I worked as a teacher for ten years
There was a power plant in ShaJiao, Shenzhen
That power plant had a lot of
Westerners
I applied to work there
They had a training department
When I went there, they accepted me
Later, I went to an even better company
There, I worked in personnel and public relations
It's quite interesting, actually
Because the job kept getting better
and to be honest, the money kept increasing too
What I did
was in this large company
which was a foreign-owned enterprise at the time
there were over 100 Westerners
I would assist them with
things like temporary residence permits, etc
And also handle matters related to
border control
customs, and such
There were also many employees in the company
All of these, including logistics,
What does logistics include?
It includes these things
Every day, the kitchen had to prepare meals
I took care of all the suppliers
Because I also worked in public relations
So, every year, for large-scale events
such as banquets
Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations, and so on
all kinds of public relations, I handled them
Of course, if they asked me to do it, I would
I didn't think too much about it, but I noticed
that some people would slip money, red envelopes, to me
For example, for organizing a banquet, right?
We would reserve
the entire dinning hall, you know, all of it
Dozens of tables, like that
After reserving it
at the end, they would give you a red envelope
And they would put it in your bag
I took a look, wow,
it was all those bills
These coupons meant that you could go to certain places for free morning tea,
and eat there for free
A bunch of them, all in denominations of several thousand yuan
for example, if you use my rice,
my vegetables, my meat, right?
They would approach you, "Use mine "
And then they would give you benefits
Wow, I felt really great
When I was a teacher, I didn't have this feeling At that time,
the money kept increasing
At that time, my salary was quite high You know, it was the '90s
I started in '92
In '93 and '94,
I was already earning over 6,000 yuan
I already had a lot of money, and people would slip me more, you know
So, I felt like, "Ah, it's really nice"
But during this time, I realized
Look, my face still looks okay now
But back then, my whole face was dark
The whole person, you know
just
I don't know what was on my face
Because at that time, we were in that
big
international food company
So, we had to undergo annual check-ups
Then, during one of the check-ups, they found something called "3 positive" in me
Positive HBsAg, HbeAg and Anti-HBc
3 positive means there was a problem with my liver
At that time, it was because I was always
going out to eat
socializing, drinking
doing everything
It wasn't just this 3 positive
I just felt that something was off with me everywhere
Actually, before that
I would often go see doctors
Anyway, I just didn't feel comfortable anywhere
For example, my stomach
I had undergone an endoscopy
I used to have frequent diarrhea
And then there's my intestines
I don't know what, so I had a colonoscopy I've done everything
I started getting acne on my face
Although I had a lot of money, I just didn't feel too good emotionally
Then one day, I went to see a doctor
Anyway, nothing was good
Even my teeth weren't good
so I went to see a dentist
When I went in and took a look
at that time, it wasn't like now
which is probably one room after another
Everything was together back then
There were many dental beds for filling teeth
The chairs to sit on were all there
I was one of them, and I saw that there were many people getting their teeth filled there
I looked at the dentist, and I thought, "Wow! This dentist is so nice"
It was that dentist who was filling my teeth
The dentist was young and beautiful
With a fair face
I looked at her, and I thought
"Wow! This dentist is really good"
Then, during the tooth filling,
I closed my eyes, and she started working
She was filling my teeth while talking to me
She said that tooth filling
shouldn't be rushed, and she would take her time with me
She said that otherwise
it might come off later
And she explained to me
how to do this and that, how to do it
I said, "This person is really good"
Then, with my eyes closed
when I opened my eyes
there was no one next to me
Everyone had left
Oh, I realized
that in mainland China, work ends at 12 noon
Everyone had already finished work
Everyone had left
Only I was left, and oh, I felt embarrassed
I said, "I'm delaying your work "
She said, "It's alright, it's alright "
She said, "Let me finish this for you, and then I'll finish work "
I said, "This person is so good "
Then she told me
that I would have to come again next time
because she hadn't finished yet
I didn't know what she did for me
I couldn't figure it out
Then she said to come again next time, so we scheduled the next appointment
I had a pretty good impression of this person, you know
Then, I went there again next time
I remember it was April 1998
I remember it quite clearly I went there again
After I went there, of course, she was the one who helped me before,
so I looked for her again
That doctor's surname is Liu
After she finished this time,
after she fixed it for me, she was
quite nice When she was leaving,
she chatted with me
She said, "Oh,
what sports do you usually like to do?"
I said, "I practice Tai Chi "
And there's Mulan fan, Tai Chi fan,
Tai Chi sword, well, at that time, whatever
I learned
I also like dancing, and I said I love swimming
She said, "That's good to exercise" We chatted for a while
And when it was time for me to leave, she said,
She said, "I have a book here Do you want to take a look?"
I asked, "What book is it?"
Then she gave it to me, and when I looked at it, oh,
it was a book called "Zhuan Falun "
Oh, I said, "This is Qigong, right?"
She said it's Falun Gong
Then I said, "My mom practices these exercises all the time "
She does it too, my mom isn't in good health, you know,
she had stomach bleeding,
so she had her stomach removed
Basically, 3/4 of her stomach was removed, and only a little bit was left
And she also had intestinal adhesion
My mom would always learn this exercise and that exercise
Such as Da-Yan Gong
In my impression, she learned numerous exercises
Ah, I said it's Qigong
Qigong is practiced by older people
That's the impression I have
But this doctor made such a great impression on me
She looks fair and pure
like an angel, really
I have never seen such a beautiful person
Young, beautiful, and kind Really nice
Then she gave it to me
And I said, "Well, of course"
I took it back, and I said, "Okay"
I said, "Let me take it back and have a look I'll return it to you later"
When I went back, I started reading it
Wow, after reading it,
this book is so good
I didn't read it all at once
I read a little bit every day
But every day when I read it, I thought, "Wow!"
I immediately understood
I said, "Look, I'm reading Lecture Four"
What's Lecture Four about?
"Loss and Gain"
Oh, I said, "This gain and loss "
Look at all the things I've acquired
including these products from the company
I treated them as gifts
giving them away casually
To my friends, my fellow villagers, and so on
At that time, you know
because many people from our hometown came over
calling each other "fellow villagers"
We were all together
I gave them things that I thought I was quite capable
and I thought they were also happy, right?
Then I just casually took them
because I was in charge of everything
That room was under my control, you know
Hmm, and then I also had
people giving me red envelopes and such, I accepted them all, anyway
They were given to me, not that I asked for them, right?
When I looked at "Gain and Loss"
I said, "Wow, how much virtue have I lost?"
I've lost so much
I said, "What I wanted, no wonder my face has turned dark
and my health isn't good, right?
I said, "This thing is all acquired through virtue"
I even argued for it
When I didn't get it before, I was so angry
all for the sake of titles and such
I exchanged it with my own virtue
I said, this book indeed
what it talks about really resonates with me
It really touches me deep inside
So I said I want to follow this "
And then this doctor,
she called me
She called me and asked,
"Have you read that book?"
I said, "I haven't finished reading it"
And then I told her,
"Wow! I said, this book is so good!"
She said, "There are also exercises" I said, "Ah?"
Many exercises, and more and more people are doing them, right?
At that time, I felt, "Wow! I'm so happy"
You know, what did I feel at that time?
Every day when I walked,
it was like I wanted to jump up with that feeling
I wanted to jump up
And riding a bicycle was also incredibly enjoyable
Riding a bicycle to do the exercises
Oh, later on, with this doctor
I said to her, "Oh, thank you so much"
I said, "You really helped me a lot"
She said,
"You really made it in"
She said, "I thought at that time, it seemed like
you couldn't calm down"
Then later, I started cultivating
For example, whether you're at home or at work,
if there are conflicts or something
you look within yourself for any situation
This is called self-cultivation
Hey, you will feel particularly open-minded
As a person, you will view things with less attachment
with a lighter perspective Then I recalled
back in college
when they assigned houses
At that time, it was about housing assignments,
not like later with commercial housing
It was based on seniority Those with less seniority than me
How come they could get assigned, and I couldn't?
I got so angry about that
and I searched here and there
But after reading this book
it didn't bother me anymore
You will feel that these are all trivial matters
Because if you know
if you argue and fuss
it's still belong to him
Just because you argue and fuss doesn't mean you'll get it
In the end, who gets hurt?
You hurt yourself
Not just hurting yourself
But isn't there a saying like this?
The crying baby gets the milk
It means the more you cry, the more you might get
Yes, but this turns people into bad individuals, right?
You see, when you say someone is cunning and shrewd,
and that others should do the work,
but you get the benefits yourself, right?
Of course, I used to want to be that kind of person too
So wouldn't it be nice if I did less work?
If I receive the benefits, of course, I would be happy, right?
But what about when you don't receive them?
It's not like all the benefits are yours, right?
All the advantages go to you
Then you will have unpleasant things happen to you
Right? Like before
when I encountered these unpleasant things
how did I handle them?
Then I recalled
If I had cultivated myself at that time
I probably wouldn't have taken it so seriously
For example, if I used to
go to the restroom and found out
that there was no toilet paper
I would get very angry
Why is there no paper?
The person before didn't leave any paper
I would get very angry
But after I cultivated myself
I would quickly put the paper on
clean up any dirty places, and go about my business
It's this kind of mindset that makes everything look different
The whole world becomes very, very good
You won't view others
with such narrow-mindedness
How is that person?
It seems like it doesn't matter because your overall mood is very good
When we were young, we received
an atheistic education, right?
So, concepts like Buddhism, Taoism, and others
were they easy for you to accept?
In reading this book, did you encounter any
cognitive barriers?
Because we were raised with atheistic education,
my classmate's father smashed a Buddha statue, right?
So, I believe that there are deities above us
And I also believe in the concept of karma
It's ingrained in me
It's not like you educate me to be atheistic, and I no longer have any gods
I feel that these things are not taught
When I was reading this book,
I had my own feelings
Of course, I believe in myself, right?
I think
after I finished the fourth lecture, I probably looked at the fifth lecture
Anyway, one day I just felt, Wow,
lying in bed,
that tooth,
it automatically bites "
The upper and lower teeth collide, making a loud sound
And then I thought
the taste of the medicine inside that tooth
I could smell it clearly
But, well
I think I read in that part of the book
that it's for adjusting your body, right?
When adjusting your body, for sure,
all the previous bad things
need to be expelled
All the waste Qi
The taste of the previous medicine is expelled
I lay there without any desire to do anything
and then it started
From
the stomach, it undulated
It undulated as if it was inside the stomach
It's not that the stomach is not well
This stomach is not well
It's just like it's there
Helping you adjust, it's just that
I say it's incredible
I haven't practiced yet, I didn't even know there were cultivation methods
Jiang Lan, what do you do with your free time?
Traveling
playing with friends
going out to eat
band practice
what instrument?
What instrument do you play?
I play the baritone horn
The bass trombone
Thank you, Jiang Lan! It took so much of your time
to chat with me, and I benefited a lot
Thank you! No problem
Actually, thank you! You spent so much time
No, hahaha, alright
