Today's book is: “Mano žodynas” (My Dictionary) by Richard Scarry
We chose the best wordbook ever - in Lithuanian!
The illustrations are by Richard Scarry - USA author and writer of children's TV animation "Busy Town."
It is a great way for children to start learning the names of things and developing language. This particular book is both in English and Lithuanian.
The most wonderful part is - it connects my children with their heritage. Something that we cherish. This book was read to my mother from her Lithuanian mother, read to me, and now it is a favourite for my children.
So Little Listeners, what books are floating around in your grandparents basement? Maybe it’s time to go visit them and connect - see what you can find?
I'm invited to read a book today by your beautiful host. I have this book which has a Lithuanian
language in it which is my background and where I come from and same for the host that's her
background as well so this is something interesting to have a look and just see maybe if you guys have
any family members that are maybe from another country or read another language so this is a
beautiful book with drawings and translations of what the drawings are in both languages Lithuanian
and English so we're gonna have a look and see what we can learn today so we've got
so every page has a different theme so the theme that I've chosen for today
is a farm with farm animals and we've got beautiful photos so it's really nice for
learning you can see the photos even if you don't know English or Lithuanian you can actually learn
what things are so we've got let's see we've got a weather vane which tells us the direction
of the wind and in Lithuanian it's called Vėjarodis might sound strange but it's a
beautiful little language that I know and it's my first language actually
uh we've got this one which some of you might know what that is that's a sheep
and in Lithuanian it's called Avis and oh I didn't read the title actually it's called
which is the farm of the bear so where is the bear let's see oh yeah there's a little mama bear
hanging up clothes has mama to do lots of washing to do and the clothes line in Lithuanian it's
called Virve what else do we got what animals do we have in here we've got a cow right here
which is Karve and then we've got a horse which is Aklis
oh we've got a delicious red apple for the horse to eat and that's Obelis
and a similar name for that is Obelis which is the name of the tree where the apples grow on
so it's a beautiful way to learn what the subjects are whether it's in Lithuanian or
it's in English or whatever other language you may speak at home so it's really fun to look at
maybe if there's any family members from your family tree that speak another language
maybe it's your mom maybe it's your dad maybe it's your grandparents
and this book is really nice because it reminds me of my childhood so when I was little
the drawings were really similar and even the way the animals are drawn it's a little bit
different than nowadays it's more old school let's say but it's very simple there's no fancy
3d animations but it's just a really really beautiful colorful simple book that the little
ones can learn about what things are and their names and I love when animals are friends I always
which is really similar to English and Lithuanian which is patient which is a little tiger there
oh sorry the lion was the doctor and we've got a little bear I think that's the same bear from the
farm little mama bear she's also a nurse and we've got we've got a dentist
we've got a rhino as a dentist
very very nice we've got clothing items and another little bear I think that's the brother
of the mama bear looks like it we've got names for rubber boots
we've got snow suit which we don't need in the tropics here but it's a good word to me
oh more animals animals are my favorite so let's see we've got an elephant in the corner there
which in Lithuanian is dramblis and we've got beautiful little panda bear in the corner
panda it's the same thing that's what I thought even though it's my first language I don't use it
every single day so sometimes I forget and we've got a giraffe in there giraffe also really similar
sounding we've got uh what else do we got in there we've got a lion which is glutas
the king of the jungle as they say
which is little monkeys dancing around here as you can see oh we've got a polar bear
we don't have these here in the tropics either but
we really oh we've got a little poem okay let's read this one while we've got it
foreign
so this was asking you about which animal is your favorite one my favorite one i would have to say
the elephant which one is your favorite do you have a favorite animal I think all animals are
really fun but you might have a favorite and we've got some colors there
the wheel of color all the different colors oh this is actually really cool
so it's telling you what colors to mix in order to make so for example to make green
you have to mix yellow and blue together which I would have never expected I remember when I
first learned that that was really really fun to learn and then we've got yellow with red
which makes orange so red in Lithuanian is rodona and yellow in Lithuanian is
and then you know we've got some very very fancy dinosaur with
incredible colors somebody painted him really nicely dinosaur is dinosaurus
oh so that's to count the numbers stage eight numbers we've got a really big whale
we've got two walruses
three little piggies we've got four bells
five grasshoppers
and lastly we've got six eggs
and one is hatching at the end so it's becoming a little chicken so we've got this beautiful book
I wonder if in your home there may be some books from maybe when your parents were young
or maybe somewhere in a box or perhaps in a basement you might find
another book it's a beautiful beautifully drawn book maybe in another language maybe in the
language that you know or English simple beautiful creation for kids to learn objects and colors and
animals just bringing it back to simplicity without any crazy animation just really beautiful
beautiful natural views for our little ones to learn this is nice we've got a bit of countryside
malumas a windmill
stream lighthouse got so much going on here we've got celebrations
got some christmas things there some halloween here's an owl flying
a room our witch shventes is holidays in Lithuania
there's a lot of nice things that we can learn from older books it doesn't have to be oh that's
a Lithuanian flag here so we've got yellow green and red so geltona
and a map of the world there with mama bear is mama bear a teacher is our mama bear a sister maybe
a little bunny there drawing something nice drawing a flower
didn't know it just grows in Lithuania
so yeah this is the Lithuanian language which is the language that I first learned when I was a
little one and then I learned English many years later have a little look maybe are there anybody
in your family that would know another language ask them about it maybe it's your grandparents
maybe you have to give your grandparents a visit say hello ask them about their background maybe
there's some interesting stories that you can learn or hear from them I know I like to learn
and how beautiful is it to have books like this
nice and simple that I used to learn but in a fun way
you got a little sleeping beaver there
that's a booster is awakened got a bit of tug-of-war happening a little piece there
a bit of stumptive pushing the ball spirtive kicking the ball
eat and
needs to drink we've got the car section for the ones that like trucks and cars let's see
the tow truck and we've got what else motorcycles we've got a motorcycle
that's the title of this page which means cars and trucks
oh we've got a fancy sports car down the bottom there with the fox driving it
that's a garbage truck you can't forget that we do need those because otherwise
we'll have rubbish everywhere if nobody takes that out
let's see what else have we got here oh we got some cowboy cowbears cowboy bears
with the donkey has to look us and it's a whole country western in there a lot going on
we've got a street light there we've got a shoe shop
hitching post that's where people would tie the horses back in the day
oh we've got a gold digging bear that was back in the day when people would dig gold in their
towns so he's called oxaca sees he's a gold miner there and we've got us to look us
a little donkey that's helping him carry the gold hopefully he's not a big piece of gold
i went gold hunting one time it got actually no i didn't find it the person i was hunting
couldn't even see it so that was really fun
what else to reach but let's see more animals this is why this book is one of my favorites
because of all the animals in there and they're all friends got a little turtle down there
we've got giraffe which we already mentioned but oh they're saying okay so we're talking about
height so this is so the giraffe is tall which is ouch this and excuse me elephant is
big which is didalus and we've got a little mousey there if you can see it and that's little
what else have we got and keep turning you see a lot of beautiful colors a lot of beautiful animals
being friends together as we all should be even though we're different kinds of animals
coming from different kind of places but we can all be friends even if we speak different
languages or we look different you've got a page with all the birds on there
folksy which means birds and let's see let's read a couple of names here we have
we have a swan down there
which is penguin and one more let's find how about chicken which we get eggs from
this is the beautiful lithuanian book that is here to teach us some things in both english
and lithuanian so i wonder if you've got a book like that somewhere at home that you could find
or maybe if not nowadays it's quite easy to find stuff on ebay or maybe a garret sale or something
like that or maybe ask your parents to see if there's anything like that laying around just
have a look because you never know what you can find so this is it for this book here we go
thank you for listening and this is lithuanian language here we go
