Tune in to see what happened when my tablet and my GPS completely died on a flight from Houston Southwest to Killeen, Texas.
Get your Official B2 Merch at: https://b2aviation.square.site/
Houston Southwest Airport, weather, wind, three, zero, zero, at, one, six, ceiling, five, thousand, broken, temperature, two, one, so...
Crap, my tablet died.
Alright, what's up guys? You just heard the AWOS over here.
Winds are pretty gusty, so I'm expecting a lot of headwind on the way back.
But, that's going to make for a longer flight, which means I get to clock more hours.
On the way down here, we ended up doing about 120 average speed, that's 120 knots.
And, we got down here in about an hour, hour and ten-ish, which was pretty quick.
Today, there is an overcast, as you can see, 5,500, 5,500-ish.
But, we're going to get over those clouds and hopefully pick up a little speed on the way up there.
We're going to try to get up, stay below 2,000 on the way out.
And, see what we can catch.
Southwest traffic, Southwest N4068U is taking runway 27 for straight out departure, Southwest.
Alright, so the goal here is to take off, and then as soon as we are airborne, I'm going to tell them to Houston Approach, or Houston Departure in this case,
to see if we can get flight following immediately and get cleared into the clouds bravo, so we can get some altitude on us.
Approach, Cessna N4068U with a flight following request available.
Alright, what's your call sign again?
It's Cessna N4068U.
Alright, go ahead and say your request.
Currently about 2 miles northwest of Southwest Airport, would like to request flight following up to Indio Lima Echo at 6,500, type Cessna 150.
Cessna 4068U squawk 2557.
2557, Cessna N4068U.
Alright, so now we have to stay a little low, because we start at 2,000 and I'm approaching it.
VR radar contact, 3 miles northwest of Houston Southwest, maintain VFR, Houston Altimeter 29.901.
We'll maintain VFR, thanks for that.
Could we get clearance into the clouds bravo, Cessna N4068U?
Standby.
Standby, Cessna N4068U.
N4068U, go ahead and contact approach again 123.8, he'll have the bravo clearance if he can.
123.8, N4068U, thanks.
And approach, Cessna N4068U, would like to request clearance into the clouds bravo, please.
N4068U, you're cleared to bravo, airspace at or below 4,500, fly heading 270 for a good landing.
Alright, 270 at or below 4,500, cleared into the bravo, N4068U.
Looking outside, it just looks like we're standing still.
Southwest 1221, Houston departure, radar contact, climb and maintain 1,600.
The amount of headwind here is ridiculous.
And you can see all of the little gaps in the clouds here, which means that I can get over them no problem and still be legal.
Legal meaning I am at least 500 under them and 2,000 separation, and then when I get over them, at least 1,000 feet above.
AKA the 152 rule.
These are things that you learn during your private pilot's licensing.
Or since some trolls on YouTube like to be just grammatically correct about everything.
Your certification, because it's not a license.
Coming through 4,000, going for 6,500.
City of Houston over to the right.
Shout out to Houston. Super beautiful city.
N608U, maintain VFR at or below 4,500, please.
At or below 4,500, N608U.
At 4,500, I am 500 below the 5,000 cloud ceiling today.
Which makes me legal.
Luckily I did go to the restroom before this, so there's no repeat of the Denver trip.
So I flew down here to Houston earlier this morning to hang out with my nieces a little bit and my nephew, who I haven't seen in quite some time.
And to pick up some new merch for you guys.
If you guys didn't know, my sister is actually the one that makes the B-2 aviation merchandise, the official gear.
And she is the only one with a license to do so.
For those of you that don't have any B-2 merch yet, be it caps, koozies, hoodies, t-shirts, there's a link below this video.
Go and click on it. It will take you straight to the B-2 shop.
If you have any follow-up questions, definitely hit me up on Instagram at MrKevinBibbs.
Shoot me a DM.
I usually respond very quickly.
And if I don't, it's usually because I'm extremely busy.
November 6A Uniform, you can maintain VFR at or below 6,500.
At or below 6,500, 6A Uniform.
Alright.
And now, right at cloud level, 5,100.
We're going to 6,500.
I know a lot of private pilots have inboxed me asking me the question,
How do you keep yourself entertained on a long flight, especially when you're flying really slow?
Well, the answer is have a destination in mind that's going to bring that excitement up a little bit, right?
Flying is supposed to be exciting.
If you're doing the same thing every time you get into the plane, you're going to get bored.
And you're probably not going to ever hit 1,500 hours.
Select different destinations.
Just because you're flying a 150 doesn't mean that you can't travel.
A lot of people make fun of me for having a 150.
I'm like, man, listen, it's not about what plane I have.
I'm flying.
I wasn't doing this three years ago.
I never compete with anybody else.
There's always going to be somebody out there with a bigger and better plane and deeper and richer pockets.
It is all about you competing with yourself.
Are you in a better position this year than you were last year?
And if you're not, then ask yourself, how do you get there?
And if you are, then you should be proud of yourself and celebrate that.
And then set the next goal and crush that one as well.
Stop competing with other people.
Oh, my.
Ground speed right now is 52 knots.
That's roughly, I would say, 60 miles an hour in a car.
I could probably drive faster than this.
But I get to fly in a straight line.
I don't have to look out for crazy people on the roads.
All right.
We're at cruising altitude now.
I'm not expecting a lot to happen between now and then.
If it does, I'll tune back in.
But until then, we'll run some time-lapse, and I'll see you closer to the destination.
November 1, Mike Foxtrot.
We're at a contact seven miles north of Executive, I believe at 3,000.
I'm altimeter 2-9-9-0-1.
That's me, 2-9-9-0-1.
1 Mike Foxtrot.
Thank you.
Well, it has happened.
My tablet died.
Crap.
I don't have a backup with me.
Worst case scenario, I could probably use my phone, but there's that.
Also, my ADS-B died, so I don't have GPS.
When I say ADS-B, I mean my ADS-BN.
Forgot my secondary iPad today.
It just is what it is.
I am where I am.
Like I said, worst case is a backup.
I could use my other phone.
But I'm not going to do that right now.
I'm just going to fly and cruise.
And at this point, we're going to cancel flight following since we're this close to home.
So let's talk to Gray Approach.
Hey, Gray Approach, Cessna N4068U, we'd like to go ahead and cancel flight following at this time, please.
N4068U, squawk VFR, frequency change approved, so long.
Roger, squawk VFR, frequency change approved, 6-8-U, good night.
Skylark Traffic, Cessna N4068U, is approximately 5 to the east.
We'll enter right base, runway 01, full stop, Skylark.
Skylark Traffic, Cessna N4068U, entering 2 mile right base, runway 01, full stop, Skylark.
And the white range, so we'll pull first notch flaps.
The wind wants to bully me a little bit, but I don't get bullied.
I'm in charge of the aircraft.
Alright, second notch of flaps.
Skylark Traffic, Cessna N4068U, is turning final, runway 01, full stop, Skylark.
So I'm going to crab into the wind here.
We're going to stay with two notches.
I'm comfortable with two notches right now.
You can see the approach kind of crooked.
Got two reds, got two whites, means my approach slope is perfect.
You got the little offset landing strip here where you see the arrows that are pointing forward.
That is not a landing spot.
You can take off from there, but you are not allowed to land there.
You have to land off to that line right before where it says that one.
That's where I'm aiming for.
And I'm kind of crabbing into the wind, because that is where the wind is pushing me.
Alright, runway is made.
I will pull the power out.
Alright, this one is going to be a little hard.
Yep, there it is.
Alright.
And we'll get off right here.
Skylark traffic, Cessna N4068U is clear of the active at Bravo taxiing to the hangar, Skylark.
Alright guys, thanks for joining me.
I'm going to taxi down to the hangar and go grab me some food.
Until the next time, see you then.
