Last time out for Shohei Ohtani was a winner on Friday at home against the Pirates, a night
in which he struck out nine, walked only one.
It was his eighth winner of the year.
Ohtani's had mixed results on this mound.
He opens the doubleheader in Detroit here today.
And the one-two home from Ohtani comes at him with another fastball swung on and missed
for out number two.
97 miles an hour, yeah, you just can rear back and let that one go.
What a good spot, too.
It was a left-handed batter, so difficult to bring your hands up and make contact.
Down and in, you have a shot.
Up and in, no chance.
One-two pitch.
He struck him out.
Six in a row retired by Ohtani to start the afternoon.
The next one-two try to Badou.
Got him.
First time he's got him out.
Badou is three for three against Shohei.
Gets him on a punch out at 99 mile an hour fastball upstairs.
I love that spot up there.
He threw a curveball earlier in the sequence.
Even though it was off the plate, it starts in that same plane and then he runs a four
seamer upstairs.
In front of Haas, one and two.
So up there.
Kudasai.
Got him.
Paints a fastball again.
Sit down, please.
Perfect through three in Detroit.
A good young player for the Detroit Tigers.
Here's the next pitch.
He waves at that one.
And that was a good splitter right there.
And Shohei gets another strikeout.
That's five against the first 11 that he's faced.
Two quick outs here in the bottom of the fourth.
Softly to center and that's the first hit of the day for Detroit.
Yeah, 0-2 and instead of going up, I think Wallach wants this up at his eyes and he just
throws it right down the middle about knee high to Kerry Carpenter and he does a nice
job of staying with it and winding this pitch into center field.
0-2 to Carpenter.
A wave and a miss.
Strikeout number seven for Otani this afternoon.
Off the fist.
A little pop for Ren Hifo and Shohei is two outs away from his first career shutout.
Phil Nevin will be thinking if he's able to reach here on a pitch out of the zone.
Full count pitch.
Got him swinging.
Eight for Otani this afternoon.
Hard of the plate.
A swing and miss in zone for Shohei.
Eighth.
The game.
When all else fails, back to the pitch that's been best for him today.
Good old country fastball.
This would be the first complete game shutout and there it is.
Shohei Otani goes all nine.
