Welcome to Obi-Wan: a 2022 Star Wars comic miniseries.
This is issue 3 of 5.
As the storm over Tatooine creeps closer, Obi-Wan Kenobi thinks about
the Lars family and the boy in their care: Luke Skywalker.
Obi-Wan contemplates the civil war to come, and recalls the last time he fought in one.
It has been more than twenty years since the Clone Wars.
Thousands of clones, led by the Jedi, fought against the separatists
for control of the galaxy, and they won many victories.
Until a new powerful leader rose on the other side: General Grievous.
Now, armed with new titles like ‘General’ and ‘Jedi Master’, Obi-Wan would have to lead troops into battle himself.
His first opportunity comes when the Republic receives intel about an ion
cannon being built under the directions of Count Dooku and General Grievous.
The mission to destroy this new weapon before it is ever used involves
attacking a factory with near-impenetrable defenses and a single bridge to access it.
Obi-Wan volunteers to lead his battalion in the assault on this factory.
As Obi-Wan and Commander Mekedrix descend upon the system, their fleet comes under heavy fire.
They lose nearly half their force before they can even land.
But Obi-Wan makes a rousing speech about freedom and light, and morale is high.
They land, and engage the separatists’ droid army, and as Obi-Wan fights his way through
a sea of enemies, he wonders of all the death and destruction is worth it.
What is his purpose as a Jedi?
Suddenly, he sees an unarmed clone trooper named Airo carrying a red flag.
He needs to carry that flag up to the factory to signal
to the ships at the back how far they have advanced.
Obi-Wan finds purpose in protecting Airo, in preserving life, as they forge their way forward.
But just as Obi-Wan reaches the factory, a massive blast appears to take out Mekedrix.
Having stolen the plans for the ion cannon, and discovering that Mekedrix can
no longer provide back up, Obi-Wan’s battalion tries to make its way out.
But they are confronted by some of the most lethal droids in the separatists’ arsenal.
They fight bravely, but many clones are killed, including Airo.
Obi-Wan finds himself at the mercy of one of the droids,
who is about to shoot him, when someone destroys it.
Mekedrix is still alive, and he and Obi-Wan escape, heading back to their ships.
Before boarding, Obi-Wan takes a last glance at the sunrise, trying to
believe that, even through death and darkness, light can still prevail.
As the old Obi-Wan recalls this feeling, the comic ends.
Join us next time, as Obi-Wan recalls an adventure with his old student, Anakin Skywalker.
