Hello, dear audience of Radio Culture, Life and Health of Ipatthams, Vietnamese.
Today, we are happy to send you the essay of the author, Ellen Wong, with the title
Japanese spiritualist advises how to prevent the spread of mind.
The essay is translated from the original Ipatthams.
Please listen!
The elderly often feel lonely or isolated when they get old.
Every four Americans over 65 years old, there is one person who is isolated from the society.
Studies have found that the state of loneliness and the state of social isolation
can increase the risk of mind loss.
To deal with this, Japanese spiritualist advises that
the elderly can prevent the spread of mind loss by learning and always being curious to stimulate the brain.
According to the United Nations website, the global population is experiencing ageing.
In 2021, there are 761 million people over 65 years old around the world
and this number is expected to reach 1.6 billion by 2050.
However, a report published by the World Health Organization in 2021 shows
that mind loss is becoming the number one concern of the elderly.
The report emphasizes that 8.1% of women and 5.4% of men over 65 years old are currently experiencing mind loss.
This number is expected to increase to 78 million by 2030 and 139 million by 2050.
The elderly are more at risk of mind loss due to social isolation.
A recent study by Johns Hopkins University, published on the website of the American Association for the Elderly in 2023,
followed 5,022 people over the age of 65 for 9 years.
Studies show that of the 5,022 elderly,
1,172 people, about 23.3%, reported social isolation.
Meanwhile, 3,850 people, about 76.7%, did not report social isolation.
The elderly are more at risk of mind loss due to social isolation than those who are not isolated.
Long-term loneliness increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of brain hemorrhage.
A study published on the website Alzheimer's and Dementia in 2021
analyzed the health data of middle-aged people from 45 to 64 years old for about 18 years
and found that long-term loneliness significantly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Simple media technology can prevent social isolation.
According to another study by Johns Hopkins University,
the elderly use communication technologies such as e-mails or text messages via mobile phones
or computers to interact with others,
the risk of social isolation is less than 30%
compared to those who are not accessible to related media technology.
This study shows that the use of simple communication technologies
can play an important role in protecting the elderly from social isolation,
which is related to serious health risks.
A Japanese expert advises how to prevent brain hemorrhage
by studying to activate the brain.
Hideki Wada is a psychiatrist in Japan
and is a psychology professor at the University of Health and Welfare.
To prevent brain hemorrhage, everyone must find a way to activate the brain.
But social communication is not the only way to stimulate the brain.
There are many ways to prevent brain hemorrhage.
And the way he recommends the most is learning.
When we get old, life becomes boring.
Professor Hideki Wada said,
for those who want to do something but have no way to start,
I advise you to study from the age of 70.
He said that starting to study at the age of 70 is not going to the school you choose,
nor is it to be promoted,
but to start studying without pressure,
studying in a fun and comfortable way.
He believes that studying is a joy.
Every day can be full of happiness
and is the best way for the elderly to spend their time, always curious.
In addition, Professor Hideki Wada emphasized that
it is very important to always be curious.
He suggested that if the elderly live alone,
they should always keep themselves entertained by new things.
For example, when a new smart phone is released,
try to learn how to use different functions,
listen to children's songs,
and sing songs when going to karaoke,
fly a drone to experience new feelings,
study history and culture
that you are not interested in when you are young.
Professor Hideki Wada said,
I believe that being curious is the best way to train your brain.
Feeling new stimuli every day is also a good way to relieve loneliness.
Live a healthy life
Surgeon Ryoichi Nakahara
at Tokyo University said in an interview with Epoch Times that
when there are elderly people,
physiological functions in every part of the body are gradually decreasing,
including loss of energy,
exercise problems, or loss of loved ones and friends.
These losses can make some people bored and lose their spirits.
Some people, when they feel lonely,
choose not to live a healthy life,
such as smoking, drinking, sitting for a long time, etc.
All this makes the aging process happen faster.
These are also factors that lead to brain degeneration.
Surgeon Ryoichi Nakahara said that
elderly people should have their own pleasures and hobbies,
and should maintain a regular lifestyle,
continue to exercise or travel to have a relaxed mood,
participate in community activities to enrich their lives.
All these things can reduce the feeling of loneliness effectively
and help fight cognitive impairment.
